who is featured each week in his 'Sharpshooter' column. Covering

With skillful storytelling, Matthew McKenzie weaves together the
industrial, cultural, political, and ecological history of New
England's fisheries through the story of how the Boston haddock
fleet - one of the region's largest and most heavily industrialized
- rose, flourished, and then fished itself into near oblivion
before the arrival of foreign competition in 1961. This fleet also
embodied the industry's change during this period, as it shucked
its sail-and-oar, hook-and-line origins to embrace mechanized power
and propulsion, more sophisticated business practices, and
political engagement. Books, films, and the media have long
portrayed the Yankee fisherman's hard-scrabble existence, as he
faced brutal weather on the open seas and unnecessary governmental
restrictions. As McKenzie contends, this simplistic view has long
betrayed commercial fisheries' sophisticated legislative campaigns
in Washington, DC, as they sought federal subsidies and relief and,
eventually, fewer constricting regulations. This clash between
fisheries' representation and their reality still grips fishing
communities today as they struggle to navigate age-old trends of
fleet consolidation, stock decline, and intense competition.
This handbook covers the small game, fishing and trapping licenses
of Nebraska for the period of 1901-2009 when pre-printed licenses
(later called permits) were issued. Most licenses are illustrated.
This is a full-color edition that is perfect bound. Other editions
are available with different bindings and/or less expensive black
& white contents.

Some time late in the last century, Giles Catchpole and Bryn Parry
began to catalogue the varied characters to be found in the
shooting field and the results of their researches have been
published monthly in The Shooting Gazette. Now, they have loaded up
another game bag's worth of sharply written and wittily observed
Shooting Types and unleashed them onto an expectant readership
through The Second Barrel. Here is an extended line of assorted
Guns, good and not so good. Some shoot like gods, quite a lot
don't. Some own dogs that retrieve what they have shot and some
have dogs who chase what they haven't. There is a supporting cast
of spouses, partners and significant others - some being supportive
and others less so. And then there are the keepers, beaters,
pickers-up, hosts and hostesses without whom the whole undertaking
would be utterly impossible and therefore no fun at all. If you
shoot or go shooting you will recognise many of the characters in
this book. You may remember them with a sigh of pleasure or a gasp
of horror, or something in between. Who knows, you might even see
aspects of yourself here, or if you can't, the person who gave this
book to you probably does.

Jim Gasque's classic 1948 work offers a period portrait of outdoor
life in the Great Smoky Mountains. Filled with anecdotes, fishing
and hunting stories, and recollections of legendary local sportsmen
and guides, "Hunting and Fishing in the Great Smokies" presents a
social history of these activities before the founding of the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934. The book also offers an
insightful glimpse of the region just prior to an era of
significant development and growth.
Gasque's guide covers trout streams and trout fishing, lake
fishing, and hunting. Thanks to careful preservation by the park,
the streams Gasque describes still draw sportsmen today. His tips
on prime fly-fishing spots are remarkably up to date and remain
valuable for twenty-first-century anglers. Hunting is now
prohibited within the park, but in surrounding areas it is still
common.
Jim Casada's introduction for this new edition provides a
biographical profile of Gasque, puts the hunting and fishing ethics
of the period into perspective for today's sportsmen, and offers
Casada's thoughts on fishing in the park as it exists today.
