The book presents the never before published story of the 1873-74 whaling voyage of the F.H. Moore through the eyes of crew member Sam Williams. The book also includes some lost notes of another whaling voyage Williams took to the Azores. There are also excerpts of three first person accounts of whaling published in the 1800's. 'Retire? You can't retire!', Sir David Attenborough told John Bartram, when the man who has been gamekeeper and senior wildlife officer for Richmond Park for the past thirty years announced his intention to step away from the role, bidding farewell to the iconic park which has been his home, the backdrop for a career many would give anything for, and a way of life for so long. During a career spanning four decades John has been the behind-the-scenes mastermind ensuring the welfare and maintenance of Richmond Park's world-famous herd of deer - widely thought of as the finest herd in captivity. Working with these fabled creatures has demanded balancing their needs with the very real, and often fatal, dangers the park's visitors pose to his herd, and John pulls no punches when it comes to his opinion on the deer's place in the scheme of things, the human 'invaders' and the collision of their two worlds. A remarkable diary chronicling the final year of John's charmed life as the guardian of Richmond Park, this memoir tells of the unique demands of each new season, and of the enormous wrench he will feel upon no longer waking up in the midst of so much unchanged and wild beauty.Park Life is a treasure trove of stories and memories, some poignant and moving, others offbeat and hilarious: from the quirk of fate and farcical interview that led to him getting the job, to living in close-quarters with the deer, the tragedy of putting down fatally wounded animals, and the annual ritual of the rut - as dependable as the rising and setting of the sun.

Charley Waterman was a true Renaissance sportsman. He kept his interests broad, his knowledge deep yet playful. This book is no exception. This collection of stories from his long and varied life in the great outdoors features flyfishing on western creeks, on such storied trout streams as the Letort, and on the Florida flats; chasing sage grouse in Montana, ptarmigan in Alaska, and quail in Mexico, all behind his beloved bird dogs; and Waterman's philosophical scrutinies of tradition and the mysticism behind shotgunning, rounded out with tales of runaway boat trailers and camping in the Everglades. Written in Waterman's usual humor and understatement, this volume is the crowning achievement of his writing career.

Decoys and their makers of the Canadian Maritime region can now be studied through the extensive research contained in this book. The region, including Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, is actually the northern section of the Atlantic Flyway. Few of the many fine decoy carvers from these areas have been identified before, while the little information which has appeared often has been inaccurate. Maritime-Canadian decoys are available on the market and can be found in collections in the United States as well as Canada. Many of them are among the finest decoys made in North America.
Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife Pauline journeyed in December 1933. Hemingway's well-known interest in - and fascination with - big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip. It is examination of the lure of the hunt and an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape and of the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.
Born and raised in the South Yorkshire mining village of Hoyland Common, Richard Hines remembers heaps of coal dust, listening out for the colliery siren at the end of shifts and praying for his father's safe return. When he failed his eleven-plus it seemed all too likely that he would follow in his father's footsteps and end up working in the pits - unlike his older brother Barry, who had passed the exam to grammar school and seemed to be heading for great things. Crushed by this, Richard spent his time in the fields and meadows beyond the slag heap. One morning, walking in the grounds of a ruined medieval manor, he came across a nest of kestrels. Instantly captivated, he sought out ancient falconry texts from the local library and pored over the strange and beautiful language there. With just these books, some ingenuity and his profound respect for the hawk's indomitable wildness, Richard learned to 'man', or train, his kestrel, Kes, and in the process found the passion that would shape his future. Richard's experiences with kestrels inspired Barry's classic novel A Kestrel for a Knave. When production began on what would become Ken Loach's iconic film Kes, Richard himself trained the kestrels that would soar on screen and into cinematic history. No Way But Gentlenesse is a superb, moving memoir of one remarkable boy's love for a forgotten culture, and his attempt to find salvation in the natural world. |
