SHORTLISTED FOR THE BLUE PETER BOOK AWARDS 2019 - BEST BOOK WITH
FACTS SHORTLISTED FOR THE ROYAL SOCIETY YOUNG PEOPLE'S BOOK PRIZE
2019. LONGLISTED FOR THE UKLA BOOK AWARDS 2020 Did you know that
without the 'lead' in your pencil, there would be no life on Earth?
Just about everything in the universe is made from only 92 elements
- and from aluminium to zinc, many of them are hiding in your very
own home! Packed with Lauren Humphrey's quirky illustrations and
written by the multi-talented Mike Barfield, this unique
introduction to the elements in the periodic table will excite all
young readers as they help Sherlock Ohms solve the mystery of how
absolutely everything came to exist!
This edited volume of papers from the twenty first International
Conference on Chemical Education attests to our rapidly changing
understanding of the chemistry itself as well as to the potentially
enormous material changes in how it might be taught in the future.
Covering the full range of appropriate topics, the book features
work exploring themes as various as e-learning and innovations in
instruction, and micro-scale lab chemistry. In sum, the 29 articles
published in these pages focus the reader's attention on ways to
raise the quality of chemistry teaching and learning, promoting the
public understanding of chemistry, deploying innovative technology
in pedagogy practice and research, and the value of chemistry as a
tool for highlighting sustainability issues in the global
community. Thus the ambitious dual aim achieved in these pages is
on the one hand to foster improvements in the leaching and
communication of chemistry-whether to students or the public, and
secondly to promote advances in our broader understanding of the
subject that will have positive knock-on effects on the world's
citizens and environment. In doing so, the book addresses (as did
the conference) the neglect suffered in the chemistry classroom by
issues connected to globalization, even as it outlines ways to
bring the subject alive in the classroom through the use of
innovative technologies.
This book is about how students are taught the periodic table.
It reviews aspects of the periodic table's development, using the
history and philosophy of science. The teaching method presented in
this book is ideal for teaching the subject in high school and at
introductory university level.
Chemistry students taught in this new, experimental way are
compared with those taught in the traditional way and the author
describes how tests found more conceptual responses from the
experimental group than the control group.
The historical aspects of importance to this teaching method are:
the role of the Karlsruhe Congress of 1860; the accommodation of
the chemical elements in the periodic table; prediction of elements
that were discovered later; corrections of atomic weights;
periodicity in the periodic table as a function of the atomic
theory; and the accommodation of argon.
The experimental group of students participated in various
activities, including: discussion of various aspects related to the
history and philosophy of science; construction of concept maps and
their evaluation by the students; PowerPoint presentations; and
interviews with volunteer students."

GCSE Chemistry is widely used throughout the world by students
preparing for GCSE or equivalent examination courses. This edition
has been produced to reflect the revised GCSE specifications and to
ensure that it is thoroughly up to date. Amendments have been made
throughout the text and illustrations to fulfil these aims. In
particular, the development of scientific ideas has been expanded,
with additional material on the discovery of the periodic table and
theories of acids and bases. Further information has been provided
on topics, such as instrumental techniques for identifying elements
and compounds, the effects of plate tectonics, colloids and
carboxylic acids, specifically aspirin, ascorbic acid and citric
acid. There is additional material on the technological
applications of chemistry, including the extraction and use of
titanium and industrial uses of enzymes. Internet research
activities have been included. Many of the questions within the
text and at the end of each chapter have been updated. Questions
from recent past papers have been used for the GCSE exam questions
section at the end of the book.
Activate is a new Key Stage 3 Science course for the 2014
curriculum, designed to support every student on their journey
through Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 success. This student book will
spark students' curiosity in chemistry, whilst gradually building
the maths, literacy and working scientifically skills vital for
success in the new KS4 qualifications. This chemistry book has
three chemistry units (C1, C2, and C3) with working scientifically
integrated throughout. This new area of the curriculum also has its
own introductory chapter and activities, so you can be sure
students receive maximum support. Use C1 and C2 to cover the
Programme of Study in two years. Use C3 for a contextual
consolidation and extension of content.
Chemistry is a conceptual subject and, in order to explain many of
the concepts, teachers use models to describe the microscopic world
and relate it to the macroscopic properties of matter. This can
lead to problems, as a student's every-day experiences of the world
and use of language can contradict the ideas put forward in
chemical science. These titles have been designed to help tackle
this issue of misconceptions. Part 1 deals with the theory, by
including information on some of the key alternative conceptions
that have been uncovered by research; ideas about a variety of
teaching approaches that may prevent students acquiring some common
alternative conceptions; and general ideas for assisting students
with the development of appropriate scientific conceptions. Part 2
provides strategies for dealing with some of the misconceptions
that students have, by including ready to use classroom resources
including copies of probes that can be used to identify ideas held
by students; some specific exercises aimed at challenging some of
the alternative ideas; and classroom activities that will help
students to construct the chemical concepts required by the
curriculum. Used together, these two books will provide a good
theoretical underpinning of the fundamentals of chemistry. Trialled
in schools throughout the UK, they are suitable for teaching ages
11-18.
