When Tani Adewumi was just six years old, he and his family escaped
Boko Haram's violent persecution in their native country of
Nigeria. Tani was thankful to be safe in the new land of America,
and he had never seen anything like the buildings and bustle of New
York City! He was also thankful for the homeless shelter his family
could live in while they waited for a new home, even though it was
hard having no TV, no kitchen for his mom to cook meals, and no
refrigerator where he could get a snack whenever he was hungry.
Tani liked New York; the people there were kind to him and his
family. As Tani settled into his American school, he began
learning--and falling in love with--the game of chess. With joy and
determination, Tani studied hard, practicing chess for hours on the
floor of his room in the shelter. Less than a year later, he won
the New York State Chess Championship at the age of eight. Today,
through hard work and the kindness of others, Tani and his family
have an apartment of their own. Despite being on the other side of
the globe from the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who
surrounded him in Nigeria, Tani found a place to belong. Through
beautiful textured digital illustrations and a captivating story,
this picture book biography shares Tani's dreams and struggles with
young readers ages 4-8. Tani's New Home tells the inspiring true
story of a boy who faced difficult circumstances with joyful
energy, optimism, and passion. This book is an engaging personal
read for children just learning about the power of hope, and young
readers will be excited to see how ordinary people showed Tani and
his family love, encouragement, and community--reminding us that we
can each make the world a more welcoming place, a place where we
all belong.
This clear, simple book introduces children to the concept that
living things need energy, and energy comes from food. Starting
with an introduction to photosynthesis, children will follow along
the food chain as the energy flows to herbivores and carnivores. A
diagram, using photos of plants, a rabbit, and a fox, demonstrates
a food chain. A detailed illustration of a forest food web follows.
This intriguing book asks children to identify objects made from
different materials - metals, wool, rubber, glass, wood, and paper.
Simple explanations follow each object describing where these
materials come from - metals come from the ground, wool comes from
sheep, glass is made from sand, rubber comes from rubber-tree sap,
and wood and paper come from trees. An activity asks children to
match objects with the materials from which they are made.

With informative text and exquisitely detailed cut paper illustrations, Steve Jenkins brings this extreme journey alive for young adventurers.
Given the unprecedented growth in the knowledge base of physical
education and in the number of new physical education teacher
education faculty, and given that many of the field's leaders are
retired or soon will be, it is imperative that the "conceptual
torch" be passed in a thoughtful way. For this reason, a conference
was held October 11-14, 2007, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to bring
experienced and beginning researchers together to reflect on
research about teaching and teacher education in physical education
and to engage in a dialogue on what has been accomplished, what the
knowledge base looks like, and where teaching professionals need to
head in the future so that continued progress will be made.
Speakers from three generations of scholars were invited to address
these subjects, and the conference was organised around six theme
areas: Research on Teaching Physical Education; Teacher and Student
Cognition; Philosophic Issues; Impediments and Challenges; Youth
Sport, Physical Activity, Public Health, and Social Change;
Research on Physical Education Teacher Education; These conference
proceedings capture the maturation process of physical education as
a field of study, for the purpose of preserving the intellectual
treasures of its evolution. They will serve as an important
resource for teachers and students alike.
Today if you visit Amsterdam, you'll see bikes everywhere - they
rule the road! But that wasn't always the case. Fifty years ago,
Amsterdam was so crowded with vehicles that bicyclists could hardly
move. But mums and kids relied on their bikes to get from place to
place in the city. What could they do? Women like Maarjte van
Putten and her friends led protests, and one day, a whole swarm of
women and children took over the new big tunnel meant just for
vehicles to show what a little pedal power could do. They were
arrested, but when the women and children arrived to cookies and
lemonade at the police station, they knew they were well on their
way to making a big change.
This is a concise but rich collection of games for indoors and

As timely as it is timeless, this instructive book has captured the interest and imagination of boys for well over a century. Chapters on kite flying and fishing, rigging and sailing small boats, camping out without a tent, knot-tying for mountain climbing and other activities, as well as training dogs, raising wild birds, and other projects will appeal as much to today's youngsters as they did to children in the late 1800s. (Many of these enterprises have also been known to compete effectively with TV and video games.) Best of all, the projects have the power to inspire the imagination and help youngsters master new skills and experience the satisfaction of personal accomplishment. Unabridged republication of the edition originally published by Scribner, New York, 1890.
Essential Information for Current and Future Skateboarders
Skateboarding is back on top of the teen sport scene, and this new
series has all the information teens need to learn about this
extreme sport. Packed with full-color photographs capturing
skateboarding's exciting action, these six books cover many aspects
of the skateboarding world, including the basics of how to skate;
the popularity of skateboarding in the X Games; buying, decorating,
and repairing a skateboard; and a biography of the guru of
skateboarding, Tony Hawk. Included in this series are two how-to
titles that utilize step-by-step instructions combining text with
stop-action photography. The variety of skateboards, wheels,
trucks, and gear available for skaters is incredible. It's easy for
skaters to get confused when searching for the right board suitable
for their size and the kind of skating they do. Wingate eliminates
the confusion by explaining the difference in board sizes, the
similarities of rubber wheels, and the importance of maintenance.
