The Diadem Reference Edition enlarges the classic and elegant text design of the Pitt Minion Edition, widely admired for its fine combination of readable text and efficient use of space. The digital typeface retains the elegance of traditional Bible lettering, while offering the clarity of reading provided by modern fonts. The text is arranged in paragraph format and supported by centre-column cross-references, a comprehensive concordance, and 15 colour maps. This ESV Bible is bound in black calf split leather and includes the Apocryphal books which appear together in the centre of the Bible. The Apocrypha comprise books written in the inter-testamental period. Although not accepted into the Hebrew Canon, they survive in the Greek Scriptures. This edition includes the same eighteen books as found in the Revised Standard Version, including Tobit, 1-4 Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, Judith, Baruch, and Psalm 151, along with the additions to Esther and Daniel. As in the whole of the ESV Bible, the translation of these books strives for accuracy, providing an essentially literal word-for-word approach to the original texts.
A dictionary of uncommon, doctrinal, and thematic words found in the KJV Bible.
At the birth of the United States, African Americans were excluded from the newly-formed Republic and its churches, which saw them as savage rather than citizen and as heathen rather than Christian. Denied civil access to the basic rights granted to others, African Americans have developed their own sacred traditions and their own civil discourses. As part of this effort, African American intellectuals offered interpretations of the Bible which were radically different and often fundamentally oppositional to those of many of their white counterparts. By imagining a freedom unconstrained, their work charted a broader and, perhaps, a more genuinely American identity. In Pillars of Cloud and Fire, Herbert Robinson Marbury offers a comprehensive survey of African American biblical interpretation. Each chapter in this compelling volume moves chronologically, from the antebellum period and the Civil War through to the Harlem Renaissance, the civil rights movement, the black power movement, and the Obama era, to offer a historical context for the interpretative activity of that time and to analyze its effect in transforming black social reality. For African American thinkers such as Absalom Jones, David Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Frances E. W. Harper, Adam Clayton Powell, and Martin Luther King, Jr., the exodus story became the language-world through which freedom both in its sacred resonance and its civil formation found expression. This tradition, Marbury argues, has much to teach us in a world where fundamentalisms have become synonymous with "authentic" religious expression and American identity. For African American biblical interpreters, to be American and to be Christian was always to be open and oriented toward freedom.
Queen Mary's (1553-1558) persecution of her Protestant subjects caused many to flee to the continent to avoid imprisonment or execution. Geneva, Switzerland soon became a center for Protestant biblical scholarship. It was there that a group of the movement's leading lights gathered to undertake a fresh translation of the scriptures into English, beginning in 1556. Published in 1560, the "Geneva Bible's" popularity kept it in print until 1644 - long after the advent of the Authorized Version (a.k.a. "King James Version"). It was an English Bible that met the needs of both clergy and laity. Perhaps the Geneva Bible's greatest contribution was its commentary, which under girded the emerging practice of sermonizing and helped foster scripture literacy.

The only complete interlinear Bible available in English-and it's keyed to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance Thousands of pastors, students, and laypeople have found The Interlinear Bible to be a time-saving tool for researching the subtle nuances and layers of meaning within the original biblical languages. Featuring the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word, it also includes The Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. But what truly sets this resource apart are the Strong's numbers printed directly above the Hebrew and Greek words. Strong's numbers enable even those with no prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to easily access a wealth of language reference works keyed to Strong's-Greek/Hebrew dictionaries, analytical lexicons, concordances, word studies, and more. The Hebrew is based on the Masoretic Text and the Greek is from the Textus Receptus. The sources of the texts are documented in the preface, and are essentially the same (with some minor variations) to the Hebrew and Greek texts used by the KJV translators. Only a small minority of Bible students ever achieve the ability to read the original biblical languages. This resource offers a non-threatening tool for those lacking language training to begin exploring the languages of Scripture. Conveniently includes the entire Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible in one place Offering a concise, literal translation of each Greek and Hebrew word, it's a great jumping off point for in-depth Bible study and text analysis. This Bible displays all the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words of the Bible in the Masoretic Hebrew Text and the Received Greek Text, with literal, accurate English meanings placed directly under each original word in interlinear form, with Strong's Concordance numbers over each original word, enabling the Bible student (whether knowing the original languages or not) to refer to all lexicons and concordances that have also been coded with Strong's numbers. 2,936 pages, bound in a bonded leather over boards hardback edition. This new edition has been much improved by a new typesetting of the New Testament (Volume IV), with larger print, the left marginal column containing a newly revised Literal Translation of the Bible (2000), and a right marginal column containing the Authorized/King James Version (1769). The three volume Old Testament is an exact reprint of the 1985 Hendrickson Publishers Edition. The Old Testament does not yet have the 1769 King James Version. The only complete Interlinear Bible is now fully keyed to Strong's Concordance numbers. The Strong's numbering above each Hebrew and Greek word - along with the Interlinear text and marginal literal English Translation and the 1769 Authorized King James Version - opens a treasure house of Bible study possibilities for those who wish to understand the Scripture better. It's use will allow the novice student to read the original text without losing valuable time to look up the meaning of the Hebrew & Greek words in the Hebrew & Greek lexicons. There is no substitute for a first hand knowledge of the original text. However since only a small minority of Bible students retain an easy reading comprehension of the original text, the Interlinear Bible is a welcome aid to Bible students, laymen, and pastors who wish to continue working with the original languages. Jay P. Green, Sr. (1918-2008) is Translator and Editor of The Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible and the translator of the Modern King James Version of the Holy Bible, The Teenage Version of the Holy Bible, and the Literal translation of the Holy Bible. He has written numerous books on textual criticism. Maurice A. Robinson (PhD) is Associate Professor of Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, South Carolina.
A stylish pocket version of the English Standard Version Bible with hardwearing soft-touch binding, presentation page and ribbon marker. Ideal for personal use or as a gift. The English Standard Version is a highly accurate translation of the Bible from the original sources. It sits in the classic stream of word-for-word Bible translations, using the Revised Standard Version as a base, but incorporates all the most recent advances in modern language use. It combines the utmost accuracy with readability and literary beauty. The Translation Oversight Committee and Translation Review Board are composed of evangelical scholars from many different denominations and from various countries. Setting aside doctrinal difference and personal preferences they have striven to render the closest possible equivalent to the original in modern English. This new Compact typesetting uses a clearer, larger typeface to enhance readability, and also includes a short concordance to aid study.
The aim of this book is to explore antagonism towards, and acts of violence against, English Bibles in England and Scotland (and, to a lesser degree, Ireland) from the English Civil War to the end of the eighteenth century. In this period, English Bibles were burnt, torn apart, thrown away and desecrated in theatrical and highly offensive ways. Soldiers and rebels, clergymen and laymen, believers and doubters expressed their views and emotions regarding the English Bible (or a particular English Bible) through violent gestures. Often, Bibles of other people and other denominations were burnt and desecrated; sometimes people burnt and destroyed their own Bibles. By focusing on violent gestures which expressed resentment, rejection and hatred, this book furthers our understanding of what the Bible meant for early modern Christians. More specifically, it suggests that religious identities in this period were not formed simply by the pious reading, study and contemplation of Scripture, but also through antagonistic encounters with both Scripture itself and the Bible as a material object.
