Animals and World Religions (Hardcover): Lisa Kemmerer Animals and World Religions (Hardcover)
Lisa Kemmerer
R3,513 Discovery Miles 35 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite increasing public attention to animal suffering, little seems to have changed: human beings continue to exploit billions of animals in factory farms, medical laboratories, and elsewhere. In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Lisa Kemmerer shows how spiritual writings and teachings in seven major religious traditions can help people to consider their ethical obligations towards other creatures. Kemmerer examines the role of animals in scripture and myth, the lives of religious exemplars, and foundational philosophical and moral teachings. Beginning with a study of indigenous traditions around the world, Kemmerer then focuses on the religions of India - Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain - as well as on Daoism and Confucianism in China, and, finally, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in the Middle East. At the end of each chapter, Kemmerer discusses the lives and work of contemporary animal advocates, showing what they do on behalf of nonhuman animals and how their activism is motivated by personal religious commitments. Animals in the World's Religions demonstrates that rightful relations between human beings and animals are essential for the resolution of some of the most pressing moral problems facing industrial societies.

Divine Simplicity and the Triune Identity - A Critical Dialogue with the Theological Metaphysics of Robert W. Jenson... Divine Simplicity and the Triune Identity - A Critical Dialogue with the Theological Metaphysics of Robert W. Jenson (Hardcover)
Jonathan M. Platter
R3,452 Discovery Miles 34 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There has been a recent revival of interest in the doctrine of divine simplicity in systematic and philosophical theology, following decades of intense reflection on the tri-personhood of the Christian God. While recent studies have produced a greater appreciation of patristic and scholastic theologies, they have not yet engaged in dialogue with proponents of the trinitarian revival that emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century in anything other than polemical terms. This book offers a theological defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity through careful reading of both exemplary historical theologians and Robert W. Jenson, an important American contributor to the trinitarian revival. After tracing continuities and discontinuities amongst select historical theologians, the book approaches Jenson with a multivalent account of divine simplicity. The result is a more nuanced interpretation of Jenson's theology, an account of divine simplicity that responds to perceived problems, and new constructive proposals for divine simplicity in trinitarian theology.

Theology and Spider-Man provides a look at the religious themes present in one of the most popular heroes of the past half-century, Spider-Man. In order to create a systematic theology of Spider-Man, the contributors delve into themes of sin, salvation, and creedal theology, while also addressing liberation theology, Black theology, bioethics, and hermeneutics. This volume balances theological depth with discussion of the comics and films, which makes it a perfect collection for those interested in theology, Spider-Man, or both.

Exile and Restoration in Jewish Thought - An Essay In Interpretation (Hardcover, New): Ralph Keen Exile and Restoration in Jewish Thought - An Essay In Interpretation (Hardcover, New)
Ralph Keen
R4,950 Discovery Miles 49 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Exile and Restoration in Jewish Thought" presents the history of an idea originating at the intersection of Judaic piety and the social history of the Jews: faith in a protective sovereign deity amid contrary conditions. Exiled primordially (Eden), during the Patriarchal era, in the sixth century bce, and from the first century to the twentieth, the Jewish experience of alienation has been the historical backdrop against which affirmations of divine benevolence have been constructed. While histories of Jewish thought have tended to accentuate the speculative creativity of medieval and modern Jewish philosophers, the intellectual tradition can come into focus only with attention to these thinkers' understanding of diaspora and persecution. Ralph Keen describes the distinguishing feature of Jewish thought as a religious hermeneutic in which the primitive promise made to Abraham is preserved not just as a pious memory but as a certain hope for eventual restoration. Intended for readers with some familiarity with the history of philosophy, this book offers the historical context necessary for understanding the distinctively Judaic character of this tradition of thought, and elucidates the role of religious experience in the long process of negotiating between adversity and expectation. "Continuum Studies in Jewish Thought" presents scholarly monographs offering traditional and contemporary reflection on Jewish intellectual history, philosophy and thought. Books in the series will seek to address a range of concepts central to Jewish modern thought, evaluate the contributions of Jewish thinkers, and demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between Jewish thought and history.

Brandon R. Grafius, John W. Morehead; Contributions by Mark Richard Adams, Alyssa J. Beall, Amy Beddows, …
R2,860 Discovery Miles 28 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scholars of religion have begun to explore horror and the monstrous, not simply within the confines of the biblical text or the traditions of religion, but also as they proliferate into popular culture. This exploration emerges from what has long been present in horror: an engagement with the same questions that animate religious thought - questions about the nature of the divine, humanity's place in the universe, the distribution of justice, and what it means to live a good life, among many others. Such exploration often involves a theological conversation. This volume pursues questions regarding non-physical realities, spaces where both divinity and horror dwell. Through an exploration of theology and horror, the contributors explore how questions of spirituality, divinity, and religious structures are raised, complicated, and even sometimes answered (at least partially) by works of horror.

Ultimate Journey - Death and Dying in the World's Major Religions (Hardcover): Steven Rosen Ultimate Journey - Death and Dying in the World's Major Religions (Hardcover)
Steven Rosen
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like taxes, death is inevitable. Everyone experiences it sooner or later. This book offers perspectives on death and dying from all major religions, written by experts in each of those religions. Focusing on the major world traditions, it offers important information about what death and dying means to those practicing these faiths. The second part of the book adds a necessary and truly unique perspective - a personal look at how people actually die in the various world religions, as told by a hospital chaplain, with anecdotes and experiences that bring the death process to life, so to speak.

Each chapter engages the theology of each religion, giving quotes from the literature of their respective scriptural traditions, to explain the process of dying, death, and the afterlife. In doing so, each author draws on the history of his respective tradition and looks at real-life figures, exemplars of the tradition, showing how practitioners view death and hope to one day engage the death process themselves.

Abraham Heschel and the Phenomenon of Piety (Hardcover, New): Joseph Harp Britton Abraham Heschel and the Phenomenon of Piety (Hardcover, New)
Joseph Harp Britton
R4,965 Discovery Miles 49 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Piety is often regarded with a pejorative bias: a "pious" person is thought to be overly religious, supercilious even. Yet historically the concept of piety has played an important role in Christian theology and practice. For Abraham Heschel, piety describes the contours of a life compatible with God's presence. While much has been made of Heschel's concept of pathos, relatively little attention has been given to the pivotal role of piety in his thought, with the result that the larger methodological implications of his work for both Jewish and Christian theology have been overlooked. Grounding Heschel's work in Husserl, Dilthey, Schiller and Heidegger, the book explores his phenomenological method of "penetrating the consciousness of the pious person in order to perceive the divine reality behind it." The book goes on to consider the significance of Heschel's methodology in view of the theocentric ethics of Gustafson and Hauerwas and the post-modern context reflected in the works of Levinas, Vattimo, Marion and the Radical Orthodoxy movement.

Wittgenstein and Theology (Hardcover, New): Tim Labron Wittgenstein and Theology (Hardcover, New)
Tim Labron
R3,651 Discovery Miles 36 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a unique guide to Wittgenstein's philosophy and how it fits with theology. Does Wittgenstein's philosophy lead to atheism? Is it clearly religious? Perplexingly, both of these questions have been answered in the affirmative. Despite the increasing awareness and use of Wittgenstein's philosophy within theological circles the puzzle persists: 'Does his philosophy really fit with theology?' It is helpful to show that Wittgenstein has no agenda towards atheism or religious belief in order to move ahead and properly discuss his philosophy as it stands. A study of Wittgenstein's key concepts of logic and language in his major works from the "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus" to the "Philosophical Investigations" and "On Certainty" reveals how he came to see in his later work that meaning is not simply intuitive or a consequence of solitary empirical investigation; rather, meaning is shown in how words are woven into the community of concrete life practices.A discussion of Christology and Luther's distinction between the theologian of glory and the theologian of the cross provide clear theological analogies for Wittgenstein's later philosophy. It also provides important footing to show - through examples of scripture, liturgy and practice - that Wittgenstein's philosophy is a useful tool that can fit with theology. "The Philosophy and Theology" series looks at major philosophers and explores their relevance to theological thought as well as the response of theology.

Mimetic Theory and Islam - "The Wound Where Light Enters" (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Michael Kirwan, Ahmad Achtar Mimetic Theory and Islam - "The Wound Where Light Enters" (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Michael Kirwan, Ahmad Achtar
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume explores the 'Mimetic Theory' of the cultural theorist Rene Girard and its applicability to Islamic thought and tradition. Authors critically examine Girard's assertion about the connection between group formation, religion, and 'scapegoating' violence. These insights, Girard maintained, have their source in biblical revelation. Are there parallels in other faith traditions, especially Islam? To this end, Muslim scholars and scholars of Mimetic Theory have examined the hypothesis of an 'Abrahamic Revolution.' This is the claim that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam each share in a spiritual and ethical historical 'breakthrough:' a move away from scapegoating violence, and towards a sense of justice for the innocent victim.

Christ, Creation, and the Fall - Discerning Human Purpose from an Evolving Nature (Hardcover): Simon R. Watson Christ, Creation, and the Fall - Discerning Human Purpose from an Evolving Nature (Hardcover)
Simon R. Watson
R2,855 Discovery Miles 28 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

If the Christian God is creator of all things and revealed in Christ to be compassionate love, then how can divine agency in creation be understood in light of the Darwinian assertion that biological warfare undergirds natural selection? The implications are significant for understanding Christian discipleship and ethics if indeed the human is made in God's image with the capacity for creative or destructive "dominion" over earthly life (Gen. 1:26). To approach this challenge, Simon R. Watson turns to Philip Hefner's The Human Factor (1993), which identifies the human as created co-creator to investigate themes of freedom and determinism in light of Darwinian evolutionary theory. Hefner's argument exploring human purpose in light of a beneficence discernible in creation invites a re-examination of Victorian preoccupations with natural teleology. Inspired by Hefner's work, Watson places Darwin's The Descent of Man (1871) in conversation with historical and contemporary sources, from William Paley's Natural Theology (1802) to twenty-first century articulations of Wisdom Christology by Denis Edwards and Elizabeth Johnson, to argue that theology can offer a framework of meaning to interpret the facts of nature as revelatory of a Christian God when considered in light of the suffering Christ and an existentially fallen creation.

Early Islam in Medina - Malik and His Muwatta' (Hardcover): Yasin Dutton Early Islam in Medina - Malik and His Muwatta' (Hardcover)
Yasin Dutton
R3,335 Discovery Miles 33 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book considers the transmission of the Sunna through the lens of the great Madinan legal scholar, Imam Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 AH/795 CE), in his renowned book al-Muwatta', or 'The well-trodden path'. It considers not only the legal judgements preserved in this book, but also the key scholars involved in the transmission of these judgements, namely, Malik's teachers and students. These different transmissions provide very strong evidence for the reliability of Malik's transmission of the Sunna. Overriding these textual considerations is the concept of 'amal, or the Practice of the People of Medina. This is accepted as a prime source by Malik and those following him, but is effectively rejected by the other schools, who prefer hadith (textual reports) as an indication of Sunna. Given the contested nature of 'amal in both ancient and modern times, and the general unawareness of it in contemporary Islamic studies, this source receives extended treatment here. This allows for a deeper understanding of the nature of Islamic law and its development, and, by extension, of Islam itself.

Theology and Breaking Bad (Hardcover): David K. Goodin, George Tsakiridis Theology and Breaking Bad (Hardcover)
David K. Goodin, George Tsakiridis; Contributions by Neal Foster, David K. Goodin, Brian Fiu Kolia, …
R2,696 Discovery Miles 26 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Theology and Breaking Bad explores the brutal and seemingly nihilistic moral landscape of the AMC neo-Western crime drama Breaking Bad (2008-2013) with insights into the characters, their struggles, and the moral consequences resulting from their actions. Throughout the book, the contributors find telltale traces of theological themes that have been woven into the storylines by the writers and directors and bring them out for the reader in ten essays that span topics from Greek mythology to the Hebrew Bible, and extend into Eastern and Western Christendom. Readers will find provocative reflections that will add to their appreciation of this show, as well as its spinoff series, Better Call Saul (2015-2022). This volume also advances academic inquiries in such fields as popular culture and theology, hermeneutics, biblical studies, Patristics, film studies, diasporic and colonial studies, and explores such themes as antihero redemption, penance, salvation, and forgiveness. This book will be of interest to both academics and fans alike.

Ethics of the Sages - Pirke Avot-Annotated & Explained (Paperback): Rabbi Rami M. Shapiro Ethics of the Sages - Pirke Avot-Annotated & Explained (Paperback)
Rabbi Rami M. Shapiro
R357 Discovery Miles 3 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The clear and compelling wisdom of the rabbinic sages can
become a companion for your own spiritual journey.

At the heart of Judaism is an ethical imperative to live life from your true self, as the image and likeness of God. To do this, you must see the greatness of God manifest in all things, and therefore engage each moment with grace, humility, and justice. This imperative flowers in the words of the early Rabbis (250 BCE 250 CE), who captured God s call to be holy in Pirke Avot, a collection of pithy sayings on how best to live an ethical life.

This engaging introduction to the wisdom sayings of the rabbinic sages puts you in direct conversation with them, allowing the sages to speak directly to you about what matters in life and how to live it with dignity. With fresh, contemporary translation and provocative commentary, Rabbi Rami Shapiro focuses on the central themes in this Jewish wisdom compendium study, kindness, compassion. He clarifies the rabbinic proverbs and parables in order to expose the ethical principles at their root. By recalling the ancient voices of the rabbinic sages, he shows us the contemporary significance of their timeless wisdom and distills Pirke Avot not as a book about ethics but as a practical guide to living ethically today.

Now you can experience the wisdom of the early Rabbis even if you have no previous knowledge of Judaism or rabbinic literature. This SkyLight Illuminations edition presents the ethical teachings of the rabbinic sages, with insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that conveys Pirke Avot s core challenge of God to the Jewish people, and through them all humanity: We are to be holy as God is holy. We are to be, in a human way, what God is in a divine way.

How to Do Good and Avoid Evil - A Global Ethic from the Sources of Judaism (Hardcover): Hans Kung, Walter Homolka How to Do Good and Avoid Evil - A Global Ethic from the Sources of Judaism (Hardcover)
Hans Kung, Walter Homolka; Translated by John Bowden
R550 R499 Discovery Miles 4 990 Save R51 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 1993, the World Parliament of Religions endorsed the "Declaration towards a Global Ethic" based on the premise that the only way to peace among nations was achieving peace among religions, and that peace would only come through dialogue and understanding. With this declaration, drafted by Rev. Dr. Hans Kung, representatives from all the world's religions agreed on principles for a global ethic and committed themselves to directives of non-violence, respect for life, solidarity, a just economic order, tolerance, and equal rights and partnership between men and women. But the declaration was just the first step.

In How to Do Good and Avoid Evil, the acclaimed Rev. Dr. Hans Kng and Walter Homolka illustrate how achieving these directives is possible by examining them through the lens of Judaism. The authors make the case for a fundamental consensus on binding values, irrevocable criteria and basic moral attitudes, which can be found in Judaism's universal message that action over belief offers hope of a better world. By exploring Judaism's focus on ethical conduct over declarations of faith, its intrinsic tolerance toward other religions based on openness to more than one way to salvation, and the application of human interpretation of scriptures, the authors show a working model for making ethical decisions possible in an ever-changing world.

God of Becoming and Relationship - The Dynamic Nature of Process Theology (Hardcover, New): Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson God of Becoming and Relationship - The Dynamic Nature of Process Theology (Hardcover, New)
Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson
R580 Discovery Miles 5 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

You no longer have to choose between what you know and what you believe an accessible introduction to a theological game-changer.

"I wrote this book for you if you want to be able to locate your life in a single, encompassing story, one that includes everything from the first moment the universe began until yesterday, a narrative that embraces deepest personal meaning, a yearning to love and be loved, a quest for social justice and compassion." from the Introduction

Much of what you were told you should believe when you were younger forces you to choose between your spirit and your intellect, between science and religion, between morality and dogma: unchanging laws of nature vs. miracles that sound magical; a good God vs. the tragedies that strike all living creatures; a God who knows the future absolutely vs. an open future that you help to shape through your choices.

This fascinating introduction to Process Theology from a Jewish perspective shows that these are false choices. Inspiring speaker, spiritual leader and philosopher Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson presents an overview of what Process Theology is and what it can mean for your spiritual life. He explains how Process Theology can break you free from the strictures of ancient Greek and medieval European philosophy, allowing you to see all creation not as this or that, us or them, but as related patterns of energy through which we connect to everything. Armed with Process insights and tools, you can break free from outdated religious dichotomies and affirm that your religiosity, your spirit, your mind and your ethics all strengthen and refine each other."

The Defeat of Satan - Karl Barth's Three-Agent Account of Salvation (Hardcover): Declan Kelly The Defeat of Satan - Karl Barth's Three-Agent Account of Salvation (Hardcover)
Declan Kelly
R2,576 Discovery Miles 25 760 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book offers an innovative, critical, and constructive exploration of Barth's theology, one which demonstrates the radicality of his thought and which underscores the continued contribution he might make to theological reflection on a central element of the Christian tradition. Declan Kelly uncovers the promise of viewing Barth's account of salvation as a "three-agent drama"-a drama involving God, humanity, and anti-God powers. Kelly demonstrates and examines Barth's cosmological portrayal of God's saving event as a defeat of the lordship of Satan in the cosmos-and, bound up with this, as an ending of God's "left handed" activity-and as the bringing into existence of a new creation under the rule of God's right hand. Barth's doctrines of election, the atonement, and the resurrection receive a fresh reading as the book explores his apocalyptic grasp of God's eschatological deed of salvation and as it puts forward the claim-with and against Barth-that the climax of this deed of salvation is best located in the event of God's raising of Christ from the dead.
