Richard Hooker; Edited by John Keeble
R1,399 R1,177 Discovery Miles 11 770 Save R222 (16%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Often credited as being the father of the via media, Richard Hooker was one of the most innovative minds of English Protestantism. Theologians, philosophers, and political thinkers across the spectrum-from John Locke to John Henry Newman-have acknowledged his influence on Western intellectual history.
This classic, three-volume edition of Hooker's works was originally edited and arranged in 1836 by John Keble (1792-1866) of Oriel College, University of Oxford and includes the biographical essay by Hooker's contemporary Isaac Walton (1593-1683).
Richard Hooker (1554-1600) was one of the most influential Anglican priests and theologians of Elizabethan England. Among his many influential works are "Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity" (1593) and "A Learned Discourse of Justification, Works, and How the Foundation of Faith is Overthrown" (1585), both of which are included in this edition of his works. During his lifetime he held numerous teaching and pastoral positions throughout England.

Rhidian Jones
R3,929 Discovery Miles 39 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a thoroughly revised and updated standard work on the Canon law of the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. This highly useful book provides quick reference and accessibility to the current canon law of both churches. The entry for every canonical term presents its definition and the law relating to it in each canon. There are cross-references throughout to help the reader make further significant connections. Also included are terms not easily translated across the two canons, and some common terms from the Eastern Catholic Church. The appendices contain changes to the Universal law of the Roman Catholic Church which are outside the 1983 Code of Canon law. At a time when Christians are increasingly working side by side, this is an essential resource for pastoral workers, scholars and clergy in all the churches. For this new edition the content has been significantly updated and revised. Of the now 466 entries in this book, 80 have been updated or added newly.

Julian of Norwich - A Revelation of Love (Paperback): Elisabeth Dutton Julian of Norwich - A Revelation of Love (Paperback)
Elisabeth Dutton
R939 Discovery Miles 9 390 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Written in a time of plague and persecution, Julian of Norwich's Revelation of Love grapples with the problem of evil and the challenge it presents to those who wish to believe in a loving God. Julian's sixteen revelations about sin and redemption are some of the first theological works written in English. While her reassuring wisdom has gained in popularity over time, her struggles to reconcile her inner questioning with the teachings she had received through the church and through her mystical visions will also ring true to many readers today. In this new version, Elisabeth Dutton preserves the beauty and ambiguity in the original language, while rendering this classic accessible to modern readers. Dutton's introduction provides essential background information on Julian of Norwich, explores her role as a woman in church, and sheds light on how her ideas relate to modern issues.

Mullings and Musings II is a compilation of over ninety essays, each originally written by Charlotte Marshall for the monthly church newsletter published by Trinity Episcopal Church of Clarksville, Tennessee. The essays, often humorous, collectively tell the story of growing up in rural Tennessee in the 1930s during the Great Depression, the trials and tribulations of marriage and raising children, and growing old with the inevitable loss of dear friends. Mullings and Musings II continues the tradition of story-telling from the original Mullings and Musing (ISBN 0970641702) published in 1997. Charlotte Marshall was born in 1923 at Kirkwood, a rural community in Montgomery County, Tennessee. She graduated from Austin Peay State University. She and her husband, Jack, of 64 years, currently reside outside Clarksville, Tennessee.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs (Paperback): John Foxe Foxe's Book of Martyrs (Paperback)
John Foxe
R672 Discovery Miles 6 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, of England, only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary, the work is an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during the ongoing period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Since the English monarchs also asserted control over the Church in England, a change in rulers could change the legal status of religious practices. As a consequence, adherents of one religion risked judicial execution by the State depending on the attitudes of the rulers. During Mary's reign, common people of Christian faith were publicly burned at the stake in an attempt to eliminate dissension from Catholic doctrines. Foxe's account of Mary's reign and the martyrdoms that took place during it contributed very significantly to the belief in a distinction from the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope as a central aspect of English national identity. By compiling his record, Foxe intended to demonstrate a historical justification for the foundation of the Church of England as a contemporary embodiment of the true and faithful church, rather than as a newly established Christian denomination. Angels Celebrate - Daily Meditations for Ordinary Time, Volume Three (Paperback): Marianne Dorman Angels Celebrate - Daily Meditations for Ordinary Time, Volume Three (Paperback)
Marianne Dorman
R868 R767 Discovery Miles 7 670 Save R101 (12%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the last volume in the set for Ordinary Time in the Christian Year and it completes a series of meditations for the whole year. For the weekday readings at Mass there is a two-year cycle. Over the two years there is a different first reading from the Scriptures whilst both years share the same Gospel readings. On Sundays there is a three-year cycle with the Gospel readings taken from Matthew, Mark, and Luke respectively.

One of the ways we grow in our faith is by knowing the Scriptures well. Even if we do not attend Mass daily we can always meditate on the set readings. When we do this it will lead us into parts of our Bible that hitherto we may not have ventured. If digested properly they will undoubtedly prompt questions and raise topics for prayer and further research. This book is designed to help you to understand your Bible better and how it unveils the work of salvation by our loving God, beginning with the call of Abraham and His relationship with His chosen people. When the time was right God sent His Son into the world to continue God's redeeming love for all creation.

So the Old Testament prepared the way for the coming of the Christ that is recorded in the New Testament. It is this part of the Bible that is particularly interesting for Christians today as it gives insight as to how those first Christians came to believe in Jesus as their Saviour and were baptised into His death. It also reveals many of the problems that beset the first Christians over morality, worship, and obligations. These are still relevant today. Thus we need to heed the advice of Paul and other Christian writers of the first century in how we live out the teachings of Christ.

The Anglican Story in Ghana - From Mission Beginnings to Province of Ghana (Paperback): John S. Pobee The Anglican Story in Ghana - From Mission Beginnings to Province of Ghana (Paperback)
John S. Pobee
R1,837 Discovery Miles 18 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Anglican Church, by virtue of being the Christian communion most closely tied to the colonial history of the West Africa sub continent, could be said to be the oldest historic mission ecclesial body within the region. Emeritus Professor Canon John Samuel Pobee's work The Anglican Story in Ghana is the only published full length monograph of Ghanaian Anglicanism since Church of England missionaries first set foot on the soils of the then Gold Coast in the middle of the 18th century. It is a historical account that features insights into the work and activities of the various dioceses of the Anglican Church including their contributions to education, social evangelism and education in particular. Each chapter is illustrated with pictures of key personnel dating back to the colonial era.

African Christianity Thrives Under the Shadow of Traditional Beliefs (Paperback, New ed.): Henry Settimba African Christianity Thrives Under the Shadow of Traditional Beliefs (Paperback, New ed.)
Henry Settimba
R606 Discovery Miles 6 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is widespread fear of a resurgence of ritualistic human sacrifice in many parts of Africa and this situation looks as though it will continue to cause fierce doubt among rational thinkers. It is argued that the ghosts of the 1930s have returned. The author seeks to establish whether there is any link between ritual murder and the historical, traditional religious beliefs that were abolished during the missionary period and are today argued by elderly respondents as being the source of the resurgence of ritual murder, related to suppressed beliefs and wider economic influences. This book will address the key issues relevant to this context systematically, such as the acceptability of corruption in cultural development, the impact of the deterioration in moral values and the problem of faking culture as an assumed means of success. The impact of changes in society will also be analysed and considered as a question that should guide national developments in the global influence of commercialisation and fear. The author examines how (European) missionary teaching abolished every existing African belief and value, which were the bonds that united people. As a result of annihilating these beliefs and values, communities descended into immorality, corruption and lack of communal responsibility. This book is a unique and valuable resource for the churches and for secular groups concerned with the way in which ritualistic beliefs are increasingly endangering human lives and have led to a worsening moral deterioration in society in general.

Colin Stephenson, who succeeded Alfred Hope Patten as Master of the Guardians and Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, was one of the most amusing and entertaining observers of the high Anglicanism to which he was devoted. In Walsingham Way, he gives full flight to his renowned wit and self-deprecating humour. He tells the remarkable story of the restoration of the mediaeval Shrine by his famous predecessor and paints a vivid portrait of this larger than life character whose determined vision recreated England's premier place of pilgrimage and renewal in the quiet Norfolk countryside. We meet in these pages an endless succession of fascinating characters who flocked to Walsingham in those heady years of the first half of the twentieth century. Colin Stephenson never set out to write an authoritative historical record and his perspective is at times distinctively personal, yet Watchigham Way remains one of the most warm, engaging and sought after accounts of one of Anglo-Catholicism's greatest triumphs and one of its most memorable characters.

Translating the Bible - from William Tyndale to King James (Paperback): Gerald Bray Translating the Bible - from William Tyndale to King James (Paperback)
Gerald Bray
R418 Discovery Miles 4 180 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What motivated the men who gave us our Bible in English? Much of the answer lies in the turbulent religious history of the era, but there are clues which can be found in the prefaces published with each new edition. This collection of the prefaces to the main translations of the Bible into English between 1525 and 1611 has been prepared to coincide with the four-hundredth anniversary of the fi rst edition of the Authorised or King James Version. An introductory chapter delineates the key events, and this is followed by each of the texts, with notes indicating the sources of the various quotations and allusions. This collection therefore provides the historical and theological ancestry of a much loved translation, and readers can hardly fail to be challenged by the spiritual concerns of the translators. Gerald Bray is Director of Research for the Latimer Trust. Prior to this appointment he taught church history and historical theology at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University from 1993, having previously served as lecturer in theology and philosophy at Oak Hill College in London.

The Vocation of Anglican Theology presents a contemporary Anglican theology rooted in its sources but reaching into the future. A range of leading Anglican theologians - Rowan Williams, Ellen Charry, Kenneth Stevenson, Mark Chapman, Kathryn Tanner, Richard Norris and Christopher A. Beeley - reflect on key theological subjects such as Christology, ecclesiology and eschatology. Each subject pairs a selection of excerpts from Anglican theologians with an essay. This text is ideal for use in courses on Anglican theology. Indeed, it is hoped that it will prove to be the standard text for courses in Anglican theology throughout the Anglican Communion. In one volume, the student can meet Anglican theologians from the past and in the present, with the opportunity to learn and to inhabit a common Anglican future

The Anglo-Catholic movement within the Church of England enjoyed a golden era beginning in the aftermath of the First World War and continuing to the middle of the 20th century. Its influence was widespread in all areas of local, national and international church life, and the renowned Anglo Catholic Congress, which held a number of provincial gatherings, became a pioneering evangelistic and teaching agency that was effective in a number of areas: inner city mission, contemporary biblical scholarship, social reform, women's suffrage, liturgical creativity, sponsorship of the arts, innovative church architecture, religious life and spiritual direction, initiatives in Christian unity and more. This illustrated history, co-published with the Society of Faith, charts the achievements of those remarkable years and provides a valuable record for all students of church history.
