Nietzsche and Jewish Culture (Hardcover): Jacob Golomb Nietzsche and Jewish Culture (Hardcover)
Jacob Golomb
R4,506 Discovery Miles 45 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Friedrich Nietzsche occupies a contradictory position in the history of ideas: he came up with the concept of a master race, yet an eminent Jewish scholar like Martin Buber translated his Also sprach Zarathustra into Polish and remained in a lifelong intellectual dialogue with Nietzsche. Sigmund Freud admired his intellectual courage and was not at all reluctant to admit that Nietzsche had anticipated many of his basic ideas.
This unique collection of essays explores the reciprocal relationship between Nietzsche and Jewish culture. It is organized in two parts: the first examines Nietzsche's attitudes towards Jews and Judaism; the second Nietzsche's influence on Jewish intellectuals as diverse and as famous as Franz Kafka, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig and Sigmund Freud. Each carefully selected essay explores one aspect of Nietzsche's relation to Judaism and German intellectual history, from Heinrich Heine to Nazism.

The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy in Early Modern Europe (Hardcover): Desmond M. Clarke, Catherine Wilson The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy in Early Modern Europe (Hardcover)
Desmond M. Clarke, Catherine Wilson
R3,799 Discovery Miles 37 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this Handbook twenty-six leading scholars survey the development of philosophy between the middle of the sixteenth century and the early eighteenth century. The five parts of the book cover metaphysics and natural philosophy; the mind, the passions, and aesthetics; epistemology, logic, mathematics, and language; ethics and political philosophy; and religion. The period between the publication of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus and Berkeley's reflections on Newton and Locke saw one of the most fundamental changes in the history of our way of thinking about the universe. This radical transformation of worldview was partly a response to what we now call the Scientific Revolution; it was equally a reflection of political changes that were no less fundamental, which included the establishment of nation-states and some of the first attempts to formulate a theory of international rights and justice. Finally, the Reformation and its aftermath undermined the apparent unity of the Christian church in Europe and challenged both religious beliefs that had been accepted for centuries and the interpretation of the Bible on which they had been based. The Handbook surveys a number of the most important developments in the philosophy of the period, as these are expounded both in texts that have since become very familiar and in other philosophical texts that are undeservedly less well-known. It also reaches beyond the philosophy to make evident the fluidity of the boundary with science, and to consider the impact on philosophy of historical and political events-explorations, revolutions and reforms, inventions and discoveries. Thus it not only offers a guide to the most important areas of recent research, but also offers some new questions for historians of philosophy to pursue and to have indicated areas that are ripe for further exploration.

Collected Works of Francis Bacon (Hardcover, New Ed): Graham Rees Collected Works of Francis Bacon (Hardcover, New Ed)
Graham Rees; Edited by Robert Leslie Ellis, Douglas Denon Heath, James Spedding
R68,529 Discovery Miles 685 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sir Francis Bacon, statesman, essayist and philosopher, studied law and rose to high office as Lord Chancellor. He had enormous influence on the change of direction for scientific method from speculative and philosophical in the Aristotelian tradition to experimental and factual. Bacon's philosophical influence extended to Locke and through him to subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics. Abroad, his influence also extended to Leibniz, Huygens and Voltaire who called him 'le pere de la philosophie experimentale'.
This edition contains all Bacon's philosophical works as well as translations, plus literary and professional works, and includes illuminating introductions and explanatory footnotes by the three editors as well as a new introduction by Graham Rees.

Poincare and the Philosophy of Mathematics (Hardcover): Janet M. Folina Poincare and the Philosophy of Mathematics (Hardcover)
Janet M. Folina
R2,649 Discovery Miles 26 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a reconstruction of Henri Poincare's anti-realist philosophy of mathematics. Although Poincare is recognized as the greatest mathematician of the late 19th century, his contribution to the philosophy of mathematics is not generally highly regarded. Poincare criticized logicism and axiomatic set theory, and he argued that we have mathematical intuitions. Many regard his remarks as idiosyncratic, and based upon a misunderstanding of logic and logicism. This book argues that Poincare's critiques are not based on misunderstanding. Rather, they are grounded in a coherent and attractive foundation of neo-Kantian constructivity.

Certainty as a Social Metaphor - The Social and Historical Production of Certainty in China and the West (Hardcover): Min Lin Certainty as a Social Metaphor - The Social and Historical Production of Certainty in China and the West (Hardcover)
Min Lin
R2,807 R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume combines philosophy, the social theory of knowledge, and historical analysis to present a comprehensive study of the idea of certainty as defined in the Western and Chinese intellectual traditions. Philosophical ideas such as certainty are the products of deeply layered socio-historical constructions. The author shows how the highly abstract idea of certainty in philosophical discourse is connected to the concrete social process from which the meaning of certainty is derived. Three different versions of certainty--in modern Western thought, in German Idealism, and in traditional Chinese philosophy--are examined in the context of a historical-comparative study of Western and Chinese social processes.

Three versions of the idea of certainty are represented by the three distinct philosophical discourse and societies explored in this book. However, the pursuit of certainty transcends culture as a fundamental aspect of philosophical thought. This in-depth study shows how the social genesis and function in philosophy of the specific meaning of certainty has been delineated through a process of complex idealogical negotiation by dominant social groups--the bourgeoisie in modern Western Europe, the nobility and state bureaucrats in 18th- and 19th-century Germany, and the landed gentry in traditional China. The author concludes by suggesting new avenues for study inspired by his research.

Carlyle and Scottish Thought (Hardcover): R. Jessop Carlyle and Scottish Thought (Hardcover)
R. Jessop
R2,664 Discovery Miles 26 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book initiates a new interdisciplinary approach in the literary and philosophical treatment of Carlyle, challenging the long-held notion that his work was solely influenced by German idealism. Tracing Carlyle's intellectual inheritance through Hume, Reid, and Hamilton, Jessop argues that Carlyle was crucially influenced by Scottish philosophy and that this philosophical discourse can in turn be used to inform critical readings of his texts. The book will be of interest to readers of Carlyle, philosophers, and specialists in the literature and intellectual history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Humankind and Humanity in the Philosophy of the Enlightenment - From Locke to Kant (Hardcover): Stefanie Buchenau, Ansgar Lyssy Humankind and Humanity in the Philosophy of the Enlightenment - From Locke to Kant (Hardcover)
Stefanie Buchenau, Ansgar Lyssy
R3,017 Discovery Miles 30 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What makes us human beings? Is it merely some corporeal aspect, or rather some specific mental capacity, language, or some form of moral agency or social life? Is there a gendered bias within the concept of humanity? How do human beings become more human, and can we somehow cease to be human? This volume provides some answers to these fundamental questions and more by charting the increased preoccupation of the European Enlightenment with the concepts of humankind and humanity. Chapters investigate the philosophical concerns of major figures across Western Europe, including Montesquieu, Diderot, Rousseau, Locke, Hume, Ferguson, Kant, Herder, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and the Comte de Buffon. As these philosophers develop important descriptive and comparative approaches to the human species and moral and social ideals of humanity, they present a view of the Enlightenment project as a particular kind of humanism that is different from its Ancient and Renaissance predecessors. With contributions from a team of internationally recognized scholars, including Stephen Gaukroger, Michael Forster, Céline Spector, Jacqueline Taylor, and Günter Zöller, this book offers a novel interpretation of the Enlightenment that is both clear in focus and impressive in scope.

Liberal Utilitarianism and Applied Ethics (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Matti Hayry Liberal Utilitarianism and Applied Ethics (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Matti Hayry
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Liberal Utilitarianism and Applied Ethics" explores the foundations of early utilitarianism as well as the theoretical basis of social ethics and policy in modern Western welfare states. Matti Hayry shows how philosophers have misunderstood the very nature of utilitarianism since the turn of the 19th century and identifies the resulting problems in contemporary utilitarianism.
Hayry argues that when the classical utilitarian principles of happiness, hedonism and impartiality are combined, the ensuing ethical theory may demand that we act immorally or unjustly. This is because the scope of the utilitarian theory has been extended too far. Hayry develops a more limited utilitarian theory based on the ethos of early British universal altruism. He argues that a limited version of liberal utilitarianism and the methods of applied ethics should be employed to define our moral duties and rights. This is an important book in current discussions on social ethics and policy. Hayry's accomplished defense of utilitarian morality is certain to provoke debate.

G.W. Leibniz - Critical Assessments (Hardcover): Roger Woolhouse G.W. Leibniz - Critical Assessments (Hardcover)
Roger Woolhouse
R32,753 Discovery Miles 327 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was one of the 17th century's most important thinkers. A philosopher, mathematician and scientist, his work is comparable in scope and importance only to that of Newton and Descartes. His work dominated German philosophy until Kant, and was revived in the early part of the 20th century, when his work on logic was re-discovered. This four-volume set contains 97 of the most significant essays written about Leibniz's work. They were selected to bring out the scope of Leibniz's work in all the areas he wrote upon, as well as to demonstrate its importance to contemporary philosophy and the history of philosophy. It should be a useful reference work for Leibniz specialists, and those concerned with 17th-century philosophy and science.

R38,415 Discovery Miles 384 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Interpreting Hegel means taking a stand on all the philosophical, political and religious problems of our century." Merleau-Ponty
G. W. F. Hegel (1770-1831), arguably the greatest philosopher of the nineteenth century, decisively influenced the direction of all subsequent European thought. He has been interpreted variously as a theist and an atheist, a conservative and a liberal, an essentialist and a proto-existentialist, a rationalist and an irrationalist. In all the areas he covered, Hegel sought a new form of understanding that had eluded his predecessors but which he believed was necessary for mankind to once again find itself "at home in the world."
This collection of works on Hegel reflects the many-sided nature of Hegel's reception from 1831 onwards, and offers critical studies on the full range of his work. The four volumes incorporate the classic readings of Hegel, from both the continental and analytic traditions, and also include the central twentieth-century readings influenced by developments in European thought which reappraise his work. These volumes offer a unique perspective on Hegel by revealing how our understanding of him is influenced by historical readings of his work. Each volume provides a clear and helpful introduction which sets the articles in their historic context and highlights the central philosophical issues they raise.

Locke (Paperback, New Ed): Michael Ayers Locke (Paperback, New Ed)
Michael Ayers
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John Locke's complex masterpiece, "An Essay of Human Understanding," was a sustained attack on the dogmatism of the day and the last great work of philosophical realism before the onset of idealism. One of the most influential books in the history of thought, it is the most renowned work of the great English philosopher. Originally published in two volumes, this one-volume edition of "Locke" examines the historical meaning and philosophical significance of this work through careful explanations of the context of debate to which it was a decisive contribution. The first volume of this comprehensive work focuses on Locke's "Essay" from the epistemological side, and the second turns to the concepts of Locke's ontology--substance, mode, essence, law, and identity.

Bourdieu and Marx - Practices of Critique (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Gabriella Paolucci Bourdieu and Marx - Practices of Critique (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Gabriella Paolucci
R2,682 Discovery Miles 26 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This new book gathers together essays concerning the strategic modes of appropriation that Bourdieu practiced with regard to Marx, together with their various outcomes. It is especially devoted to the practice of critique that both thinkers exercised vigilantly throughout their careers, as this is the terrain on which we can best illuminate the debt that Bourdieu acknowledged to Marx. Ongoing dialogue with the entire body of Marxian critique is a constant in Bourdieu's writings. This is most clearly evidenced by the adoption of a critical perspective on the social world that denotes a massive Marxian presence. It is reinforced by the repeated references to Marx's texts that the sociologist scatters throughout his works. Indeed, in the interlinked set of critiques underpinning the architecture of his work, in the plethora of questions he raises, and in the scientific practice he adopts, Bourdieu attaches himself to the Marxian model - notwithstanding his polemical remarks and his own deviations, or, we might even say, by virtue of them. The book is divided into three interconnected sections for ease of access: critique of domination, critique of economic practices and theories, and critique of ideology. As the first volume in English to explore the relationship between Bourdieu and Marx, this book is vital reading for students and scholars of social and anthropological theory.
