The Christian God is deeply and passionately concerned with justice
- it's his very nature and it's evident throughout the Bible. God
created a good world; a flourishing garden, in which there was no
evil and humans and all living creatures could thrive and prosper.
But evil did enter, humankind faltered, and there began God's great
fight - to win back our hearts and inspire us to join with him in
administering justice and bringing the fullness of life to
creation. The NIV God's Justice Bible explores this key character
trait of God and important area of Christian life. Alongside the
NIV Bible text, a global cast of scholars and justice fighters
contribute study notes, book introductions, questions for
reflection and prayers to inform, challenge and inspire. NIV God's
Justice Bible is designed to fire readers' passion for social
justice and take positive steps to bring justice issues to light in
their own circles of influence - all for the glory of God. The
writers come from every continent, representing organisations such
as International Justice Mission, Compassion and World Vision.
Well-known UK and US contributors include Krish Kandiah, Ron Sider
and Joel Edwards.

Papers collected in this volume try to illuminate various aspects
of philosophical theology dealt with by different Jewish and early
Christian authors and texts (e.g. the Acts of the Apostles, Philo,
Origen, Gregory of Nazianzus), rooted in and influenced by the
Hellenistic religious, cultural, and philosophical context, and
they also focus on the literary and cultural traditions of
Hellenized Judaism and its reception (e.g. Sibylline Oracles,
Prayer of Manasseh), including material culture ("Elephant Mosaic
Panel" from Huqoq synagogue). By studying the Hellenistic
influences on early Christianity, both in response to and in
reaction against early Hellenized Judaism, the volume intends not
only to better understand Christianity, as a religious and
historical phenomenon with a profound impact on the development of
European civilization, but also to better comprehend Hellenism and
its consequences which have often been relegated to the realm of
political history.

This traditional hardback burgundy NIV Bible has 11pt print, making
it easier to read for those who prefer larger text. The text is
very clearly laid out on the page in two elegant columns, with
minimal show-though. The cover design is the same as the standard
NIV Popular Burgundy Hardback Bible (ISBN 9781444701487) which
matches the stock of burgundy hardback pew Bibles churches will
already have. The pagination is also the same, so everyone can turn
to the same page when a reference is given out in church. It also
features Old and New Testament maps, shortcuts to key stories,
events and people of the Bible, a reading plan and Bible guide,
quick links to find inspiration and help in different life
situations, and British spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Royalties from all sales of the NIV Bible help Biblica, formerly
the International Bible Society, in their work of translating and
distributing Bibles around the world.
Christians often claim to hold a biblical worldview. But what about
a biblical cosmos view? From the beginning of Genesis we encounter
a vaulted dome above the earth, a "firmament," like the ceiling of
a planetarium. Elsewhere we read of the earth sitting on pillars.
What does the dome of heaven have to do with deep space? Even when
the biblical language is clearly poetic, it seems to be funded by a
very different understanding of how the cosmos is put together. As
Kyle Greenwood shows, the language of the Bible is also that of the
ancient Near Eastern palace, temple and hearth. There was no other
way of thinking or speaking of earth and sky or the sun, moon and
stars. But when the psalmist looked at the heavens, the delicate
fingerwork of God, it evoked wonder. Even today it is astronomy and
cosmology that invoke our awe and point toward the depths of divine
mystery. Greenwood helps us see how the best Christian thinkers
have viewed the cosmos in light of Scripture-and grappled with new
understandings as science has advanced from Aristotle to Copernicus
to Galileo and the galaxies of deep space. It's a compelling story
that both illuminates the text of Scripture and helps us find our
own place in the tradition of faithful Christian thinking and
interpretation.
