Confessions (401) is the work of Saint Augustine, a Roman
theologian and bishop responsible for some of the core doctrines of
today's Catholic church. His literary works, including The
Confessions, The Enchiridion, and On Christian Doctrine, are
commonly viewed as foundational works of Christian theology and
Western philosophy. Bishop of Hippo Regius-in modern day
Algeria-from 395 to his death in 430, Augustine helped to justify
and consolidate the role of Christianity in the Roman Empire and
was canonized as a saint for his efforts. A young man does poorly
in school, steals from his neighbor's orchard, and has a son with a
woman to whom he is not married. These are some of the core
personal experiences detailed by Augustine in his autobiographical
and theological work Confessions, in which he grows from a life of
sin to accepting God and the Christian faith. Interspersed with
stories of his life and conversion are descriptions and critiques
of Neoplatonism, Manichaeism, and astrology, systems of belief and
understanding which, for Augustine, fall short of the vision of
humanity and salvation offered by Christianity. Throughout this
text, Augustine encourages readers-especially those who have led
troubled lives-not only to convert to Christianity, but to
understand the inherent imperfection of all humanity and to
envision the ultimately hopeful message of transformation and
forgiveness offered by faith in God. Confessions is at heart a
Christian text, but it is also essentially human. Augustine is
remembered not just as a saint and Christian leader, but as a
figure who precipitated the evolution of Western thought.
Augustine's Confessions is a foundational work of autobiographical
and philosophical writing, influencing such writers as Blaise
Pascal, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Aquinas, Bertrand Russell,
and Friedrich Nietzsche. Its personal nature and depth of honesty
are considered formal innovations in autobiography and memoir
writing, and its meditations on God and human nature have made it
an essential text for philosophers and theologians for centuries.
With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset
manuscript, this edition of Saint Augustine's Confessions is a
classic of autobiography and Christian theology reimagined for
modern readers.

Ever since he became a Christian at the age of forty, it has been
Poirot actor David Suchet's dream to make an audio recording of the
whole Bible. In between filming the final episodes of Poirot, David
Suchet spent over 200 hours in the recording studio to create the
very first full-length audio version of the NIV Bible spoken by a
single British actor. This 80-hour recording comes on six MP3 CDs.
It can be used on any device that displays the MP3 symbol. You can
transfer the audio files for your personal use onto your computer,
smartphone, MP3 player and other compatible devices. It is also
available separately as an audio digital download. Ebooks of each
section of the Bible - enhanced with Suchet's audio narration - are
also available.

The aim of this book is to explore antagonism towards, and acts of
violence against, English Bibles in England and Scotland (and, to a
lesser degree, Ireland) from the English Civil War to the end of
the eighteenth century. In this period, English Bibles were burnt,
torn apart, thrown away and desecrated in theatrical and highly
offensive ways. Soldiers and rebels, clergymen and laymen,
believers and doubters expressed their views and emotions regarding
the English Bible (or a particular English Bible) through violent
gestures. Often, Bibles of other people and other denominations
were burnt and desecrated; sometimes people burnt and destroyed
their own Bibles. By focusing on violent gestures which expressed
resentment, rejection and hatred, this book furthers our
understanding of what the Bible meant for early modern Christians.
More specifically, it suggests that religious identities in this
period were not formed simply by the pious reading, study and
contemplation of Scripture, but also through antagonistic
encounters with both Scripture itself and the Bible as a material
object.
At the birth of the United States, African Americans were excluded
from the newly-formed Republic and its churches, which saw them as
savage rather than citizen and as heathen rather than Christian.
Denied civil access to the basic rights granted to others, African
Americans have developed their own sacred traditions and their own
civil discourses. As part of this effort, African American
intellectuals offered interpretations of the Bible which were
radically different and often fundamentally oppositional to those
of many of their white counterparts. By imagining a freedom
unconstrained, their work charted a broader and, perhaps, a more
genuinely American identity. In Pillars of Cloud and Fire, Herbert
Robinson Marbury offers a comprehensive survey of African American
biblical interpretation. Each chapter in this compelling volume
moves chronologically, from the antebellum period and the Civil War
through to the Harlem Renaissance, the civil rights movement, the
black power movement, and the Obama era, to offer a historical
context for the interpretative activity of that time and to analyze
its effect in transforming black social reality. For African
American thinkers such as Absalom Jones, David Walker, Zora Neale
Hurston, Frances E. W. Harper, Adam Clayton Powell, and Martin
Luther King, Jr., the exodus story became the language-world
through which freedom both in its sacred resonance and its civil
formation found expression. This tradition, Marbury argues, has
much to teach us in a world where fundamentalisms have become
synonymous with "authentic" religious expression and American
identity. For African American biblical interpreters, to be
American and to be Christian was always to be open and oriented
toward freedom.
