Watching someone you love self-destruct hurts. Praying for Your Addicted Loved One: 90 in 90 provides ninety devotions of strength, hope, and encouragement to families coping with addiction. Realizing you're not alone in your struggles brings comfort and confidence to face day-to-day challenges. The overall message of Praying for Your Addicted Loved One conveys hope to families caught in the cycles of addiction. The various stages of the disease: abuse, recovery, and relapse, take their toll on families. Hopelessness grabs a family's heart and wrings it out with each slip of clean or sober time. The verses in Jeremiah 30 and 31, the foundation of the book, offer promises of restoration and redemption. 90 in 90 reflects the 12 Step model of attending 90 meetings in 90 days. While your loved one attends meetings, you will read a daily devotional to lend spiritual support. "Today I pray for other lost addicts to find the hope of recovery. I pray the families reading this book will continue to have hope that an addict-any addict-can stop using drugs and find a new way to live. If there is one thing I can say to family members it is, never quit fighting. There is always hope. With hope, I, a once hopeless dope addict, am now a dope-less hope addict." Josh Cosby

Over the years the same questions get asked of Desmond Tutu, the archbishop, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and veteran of the moral movement that ended apartheid in South Africa: "How can you be so hopeful after witnessing so much evil?" "Why are you so sure goodness will triumph in the end?" This book is his answer. Now, more than any other time in history, our world needs this message: that we are made for goodness and it is up to us to live up to our destiny. We recognize Archbishop Tutu from the headlines as an inspirational figure who has witnessed some of the world's most sinister moments and chosen to be an ambassador of reconciliation amid political, diplomatic, and natural disasters. Now, we get a glimpse into his personal spirituality--and a better understanding of the man behind a lifetime of good works. In this intimate and personal sharing of his heart, written with his daughter, Episcopal priest Mpho Tutu, Tutu engages his reader with touching stories from his own life, as well as grisly memories from his work in the darkest corners of the world. There, amid the darkness, he calls us to hope, to joy, and to claim the goodness that we were made for. Tutu invites us to take on the disciplines of goodness, the practices that are key to finding fulfillment, meaning, and happiness for our lives.

Austin Phelps (1820-1890) was a congregational minister, a professor of sacred rhetoric and homiletics, and later a president of Andover Theological Seminary. He wrote several books which were widely read, but none as much as "The Still Hour." Some of the subjects covered are quite unique, such as "Absence of God, in Prayer," "Unhallowed Prayer," "Distrust in Prayer," "Indolence in Prayer" and "Idolatry in Prayer." This is a book that will both convict and encourage. It is perfect alike for the new believer and the aged saint who has walked with Christ for decades. Don Whitney wrote: "Remember that the great purpose for engaging in these Disciplines is Godliness, that we may be like Jesus, that we may be more holy. In The Still Hour, Austin Phelps wrote, 'It has been said that no great work in literature or in science was ever wrought by a man who did not love solitude. We may lay it down as an elemental principle of religion, that no large growth in holiness was ever gained by one who did not take time to be often long alone with God.'"
A posthumously published collection of Merton's essays and
meditations centering on the need for love in learning to live.
"Love is the revelation of our deepest personal meaning, value, and
identity." Edited by Naomi Burton Stone and Brother Patrick
Hart.

A fascinating comparative account of sacred languages and their role in and beyond religion written for a broad, interdisciplinary audience Sacred languages have been used for foundational texts, liturgy, and ritual for millennia, and many have remained virtually unchanged through the centuries. While the vital relationship between language and religion has been long acknowledged, new research and thinking across an array of disciplines including religious studies, sociolinguistics, sociology, linguistics, and even neurolinguistics has resulted in a renewed interest in the area. This fascinating and informative book draws on Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Judaic, and Buddhist traditions to provide a concise and accessible introduction to the phenomenon of sacred languages. The book takes a strongly comparative, wide-ranging approach to exploring ways in which ancient religious languages, such as Latin, Pali, Church Slavonic, and Hebrew continue to shape the beliefs and practices of religious communities around the world. Informed by both comparative religion and sociolinguistics, it traces the histories of sacred languages, the myths and doctrines that explain their origin and value, the various ways they are used, the sectarian debates that shadow them, and the technological innovations that propel them forward in the twenty-first century. * A comprehensive but succinct account of the role and importance of language within religion * Takes an interdisciplinary approach which will appeal to students and scholars across an array of disciplines, including religious studies, sociology of religion, sociolinguistics, and linguistics * Provides a strongly comparative exploration, drawing on Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Judaic, and Buddhist traditions * Uses numerous examples and ties historic debates with contemporary situations * Satisfies the rapidly growing demand for books on the subject among both academics and general readers Sacred Languages of the World is a must-read for students of religion and language, scripture, religious literacy, education and language, the sociology of religion, sociolinguistics. Most people have lost a sense of destiny, God's will for their lives. Many even believe you just can't know God's will - that in His sovereignty, He will make it happen regardless of what you do. Too long this viewpoint has kept Christians from knowing the full potential He planned for them. But no more. God created you with a specific purpose, and the good new is, He wants you to find it. Just knowing God's will, however, isn't enough. You need to understand the part you play if you're going to follow it. You might be surprised to learn it involves following the desires of your heart. But before you set off, make sure you're able to distinguish His will from your own selfish desires. One of the most important lessons of all is that you can't fulfill God's will any way you want. His strength and timing, and your obedience and patience are just a few of the things it takes. This book explains all this and much more.
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (Mark 10:14 NIV) Four-year-old Benjamin pressed his nose against the airplane window and searched the sky. "What are you looking for?" his mom asked back. Without glancing up he answered, "For heaven, where God lives." This unique devotional takes its inspiration from the innocent and earnest words of children. Pairing heartwarming anecdotes with Scripture, Growing Towards God is a wonderful reflection for mothers and grandmothers, reminding readers of the wisdom we hear every day "from the mouths of babes."
Steve Harper exhorts us not to have just a devotional time, but to have a devotional life. The seven weekly sessions in this workbook illustrate how John Wesley's devotional life can be applied to our own. The devotionals cover scripture, prayer, and fasting, among other topics.
This incredible though little-known classic of Catholic spirituality presents before the reader the entire school of true Christian holiness and the means and exercises necessary to attain sanctity. As no one shall enter Heaven who is not perfect, then if we wish to attain to that perfection which will gain us entrance to eternal happiness with The Blessed Trinity, with Jesus, with Our Lady, St. Joseph and all the Saints and Angels, we need to start in earnest and with a sure method to correct every aspect of our lives. The Imitation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Fr. Peter Arnoudt, S.J. is just such a "sure method" that the soul needs as a guide to perfection. For it begins at the beginning and covers every means at our disposal as Catholics, which we have and which we need to perfect ourselves plus it covers every pitfall that we face in the daunting task of attaining holiness.
To Pray and to Love is for all persons who want to pray but do not know how, who pray but feel uncertain about it, and who pray happily but want to grow more deeply. For those who have longing for prayer and yet have never prayed, the author offers some specific suggestions about attitudes, beliefs, and dispositions that get in the way of our prayer without us even noticing. Bondi also shares some of what the founders of early monasticism had to say about prayer and Christian love that she has found especially helpful over the years.

Dr. Billy Graham says in the "Words of Wisdom" foreword, "The Psalms tell us how to get along with God, and the Proverbs tell us how to get along with our fellow man." As has long been Dr. Graham's personal practice, "Words of Wisdom" makes it easy for anyone to read five Psalms and a chapter from Proverbs each day for 31 days. This beautiful LeatherLike gift edition offers a convenient, easy-to-understand, and enjoyable way to discover how these ancient words deliver valuable life principles. King David wrote many of the Psalms, often with the passion of a worshiper and the anxiety of a 21st-century person, while dealing with everyday tensions. His son Solomon, largely known for his wisdom, wrote the wisdom literature of the Proverbs. In these nearly 3,000-year-old sacred writings, we hear the voices and counsel of those who knew God intimately. Let "Words of Wisdom" encourage you with divine hope and affirmation for living the life God has planned for you. |
