Advice to young singers often follows the standard line of the
great French singer Claire Croiza: "Study the poem away from the
music, so that you know what the words really mean." But Croiza's
advice is notoriously difficult to follow when performing French
melodies. Just how do you approach a French poem? In the lyric
poetry on which the melodie is based, meaning is conveyed not just
through the words but also through the poem's formal
structure.
Understanding French Verse: A Guide for Singers explains this
formal structure and sets out the basics of French versification,
using examples drawn from a wide range of well-known song settings.
Its chapters examine French meters, stanzaic forms, sonnets,
rondels and other fixed forms, rhyme and sound patterning, and free
verse poems. Written in a clear and concise way, it explains the
Alexandrine, how to distinguish different meters by counting
syllables, and how to identify stresses in French verse. The book
also illustrates how rhyme works and the ways in which a French
sonnet differs from its counterpart in English. And it demonstrates
how the understanding of verse techniques enhances the
interpretation and enjoyment of the melodie. The book also offers
valuable resources, including a brief history of French
versification, detailed analysis of several poems, a glossary of
technical terms, and suggestions for further reading.
While other books help singers with French diction, or offer
translations of French texts, no other book helps a singer
understand the meaning behind what they are singing. Understanding
French Verse is an essential tool for singers, accompanists, and
other musicians who want to understand more about theFrench texts
with which they are working. It also provides a useful basic
introduction to students of French poetry.

This book provides a broad introduction to the scientific and

our brains, affects us emotionally, shapes our personal and
cultural identities, and can be used in therapeutic and educational

other medical conditions? The Science and Psychology of Music: From
Beethoven at the Office to Beyonce at the Gym answers these and
other questions. This book provides a broad and accessible

The renaissance flute, with its rich history, stunning repertoire,
and mellow tone, has attracted a significant following among
flutists, whether they specialize in modern flute or historical
instruments. Yet, actually delving into the study of renaissance
flute has proven a challenge - there exists a confusing array of
editions of renaissance music, specialized (and often expensive)
facsimiles of manuscripts and early prints, and in unfamiliar
notations, while at the same time there is a dearth of resources
for beginners. Confronting this challenge with the first ever
practitioners' handbook for renaissance flute, Kate Clark and
Amanda Markwick offer flutists of all levels a clear and accessible
introduction to the world and repertoire of the instrument. In The
Renaissance Flute: A Contemporary Guide, Clark and Markwick cover
all aspects, from practicalities such as buying and maintaining the
instrument, to actual music for solo and group performance, to
theory designed to improve the understanding and playing of
renaissance polyphony. This approach enables students to immerse
themselves at their own pace and build on their skills with each
chapter. With nearly 40 full pages of exercises, and a companion
website with recorded examples and filmed instructions from the
authors, The Renaissance Flute provides professionals and newcomers
alike a new entryway into the world and practice of renaissance
music.

"The present aim is to enable the student to recognize and trace
the mental process of the composer in executing his task; to define
each factor of the structural design, and its relation to every
other factor and to the whole; to determine thus the synthetic
meaning of the work, and thereby to increase not only his own
appreciation, interest, and enjoyment of the very real beauties of
good music, but also his power to interpret, intelligently and
adequately, the works that engage his attention."from the author's
preface
