Facsimile reprint of his biography. Translated from German into
English and this edition originally published in 1865. NB. This is
2 vols in one book.
From 1823-1826, Beethoven composed a series of string quartets
which are now recognized as some of the masterworks of this genre.
These quartets show Beethoven at his height as a composer, with
composition occurring during the same timeframe as his Ninth
Symphony. This collection includes the five late quartets (Op. 127,
130, 131, 132, & 135) as well as the Grosse Fuge (Op. 134).
Recordings are now the primary way we hear classical music,
especially the more abstract styles of "absolute" instrumental
music. In this original, provocative book, Arved Ashby argues that
recording technology has transformed our understanding of art
music. Contesting the laments of nostalgic critics, Ashby sees
recordings as socially progressive and instruments of a musical
vernacular, but also finds that recording and absolute music
actually involve similar notions of removing sound from context. He
takes stock of technology's impact on classical music, addressing
the questions at the heart of the issue. This erudite yet concise
study reveals how mechanical reproduction has transformed classical
musical culture and the very act of listening, breaking down
aesthetic and generational barriers and mixing classical music into
the soundtrack of everyday life.
Musical score to Bailero (for Solo Voice, unaccompanied), by
avant-garde composer Dawn K. Williams, which may be sung by any
voice type. Partly sung into a megaphone to depict echoes across
mountains, the piece combines newly-composed music with quotation
of the Auvergne folksong by the same name. The Occitan text, an
exchange between two shepherds, appears both unaltered and in
rearranged phonemes. Includes program note, text translation,
performer instructions, and full-color photograph of the composer
performing the piece. Difficulty level: Virtuosic. Duration: 20
minutes. - COMPOSER AUTHORIZED SCORE - www.dawnkwilliams.com

Today's most famous cellists as well as up-and-coming talents are
subjects of this extraordinary photographic reportage book. For
years, Uta Ssse-Krause took pictures at festivals, workshops,
competitions, rehearsals and concerts of performing cellists, newly
discovered and established leading musicians. Her photographs
capture the individuality of each cellist; all the photographs were
taken live without any posing. This collection was taken from her
own photo archives, and these were selected for their absolute
authenticity ? portraying faces as the mirror of musical sentiment.
As different as each cellist's state of mind may be, they all have
one thing in common: unconditional dedication to their play.
Wagner's Siegfried Idyll (WWV 103) represents one of the few
non-operatic works created by Wagner. This work for small orchestra
was originally composed for his second wife, Cosima, and was
originally performed on her birthday, with Wagner waking her to the
theme.
Viennese composer, pianist and renowned teacher Carl Czerny
(1791-1857) wrote more than a thousand works, including masses,
operas, orchestral, chamber and piano works. But his fame rests on
his many studies and exercises for the piano. These are new
editions, newly engraved, with introductory articles in English,
for the moderately advanced pianist, in progressive order of
difficulty.
Beethoven followed in the footsteps of Haydn, father of the string
quartet, and created what is now regarded as one of the finest
collections of masterworks in the string quartet genre. From the
early quartets, reminiscent of some of Mozart's quartets, to the
soaring and emotional late quartets, these works have become
favorites of both performers and audiences around the world. This
collections includes the full scores for all 16 string quartets as
well as the Grosse Fuge. Early String Quartets: String Quartet No.

Paul Marie Theodore Vincent d'Indy (1851-1931), was a composer and
teacher. He initially read law and then moved to music. He studied
under Cesar Franck at the Conservatoire de Paris. He co-founded the
Schola Cantorum in 1894.
This work (Op. 59, No. 2) is one of the Razumovsky Quartets
originally published in 1806. The second movement of the quartet
gives us a hint of what is to come in the Op. 132 quartet with its
hymn-like quality, while the third movement includes a "Theme
Russe" also used by Mussorgsky in Boris Gudunov. This theme is
thought to have been given to Beethoven by Razumovsky to use in the
quartet. Beethoven did so with humorous results. This edition is a
pocket score of the quartet, designed for easy use in rehearsals
and transport in your case, or for studying of the work.
(Misc). Apart from the technical aspect that is to the fore,
Hosokawa also opens the listener's eyes to the soft Impressionist
color of Japanese poetry: a cherry blossom celebration, a
lullaby-and again and again an approach to the sound of the koto,
the traditional Japanese zither.
Beethoven's Opus 59, Number 2 is the first of three quartets
written for a commission by Prince Andreas Razumovsky, who was
Russian Ambassador to Vienna at the time. The work comes just six
years after the last of Beethoven's early quartets, yet shows a
significant difference in style - and in length, with performance
times of over 40 minutes common for the quartet. This edition is a
Pocket Score, designed for ease of use in rehearsals or in studying
the work. Its compact size allows for easy transport in your case.
Opus 59, No. 3 is the last of the three Rasumovsky Quartets written
by Beethoven on the commission of Prince Andreas Razumovsky. The
other two quartets in this series feature a specified Russian theme
(Theme Russe) in the work, while this work does not. Many have
looked to the second movement of the quartet as a Russian movement
- with decidedly different tonal qualities than were common to
Beethoven's work at the time. This edition is a Pocket Score,
designed for ease of use in rehearsals or in studying the work. Its
compact size makes it perfect for carrying in your case.
Dubois' oratorio was given its premiere on Good Friday (April 19),
1867 at glise de la Madeleine in Paris under the composer's
direction. Although first published in 1886 by Georges Hartmann of
Paris, the vocal score presented here is a digitally enhanced
reprint of the one first produced in 1899 by G. Schirmer of New
York, with an English translation beneath the original Latin text
by Theodore Baker (1851-1934). This score has been carefully
reviewed, with measure numbers and rehearsal letters added. It is
now completely compatible with the widely available full score and
orchestral parts issued by Edwin F. Kalmus. The large (A4) size
makes it particularly easy to read for choruses both at both
professional and community levels.
Beethoven's early string quartets (Opus 18), were written between
1798 and 1800 and quickly became part of the standard string
quartet repertoire. This is the Performer's Edition of the
quartets, with clean print and easy to read markings designed for
the performer.
