Richard Rogers Talking Buildings introduces young readers to the work of one of the 20th Century’s most influential architects for the first time. Written by his son, Ab Rogers, the book pays homage to Richard’s passion for legibility in architecture, each building tells its own story in a playful, informative language designed to intrigue, engage and inspire young minds. In addition to exploring the architect’s groundbreaking work, it celebrates his commitment to innovative building design that drives social and environmental change and shines light on his vision for a city that is fair and fun for all, his ethos as relevant today as ever before. The book marks the opening of the exhibition of the same name at the Sir John Soane Museum, which runs from the 18th of June to the 21st of September 2025.

A good vocabulary is at the heart of 11 plus and Common Entrance exams, such as those set by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), compiled by Durham University, and Granada Learning (GL), also known as NFER. Both the verbal reasoning and comprehension sections of these exams typically contain questions to test breadth of vocabulary and ability to infer meaning for previously unknown words. This book contains intentionally difficult and unfamiliar vocabulary to encourage students to infer the meaning of new words from the context of the given classic or contemporary passage. The Vocabulary in Context series of books increase in levels of difficulty so as to encourage consistent, long-term development of reading and comprehension skills. The purpose of this book is to develop the important skill of reading in context and not just for memorising new vocabulary. This book targets the key skills involved in verbal reasoning and comprehension and is a unique and form of study for the 11 plus. This book also includes an interesting word origin or idiom on each page.
Someone in this house was sad but pretending not to be. Someone – and this thought made a smile curl up on its face – needed some nouka-mischief. When Jem and his family move to the countryside, he doesn’t like his new home one bit. It’s an old cottage on the side of a hill, where strange things keep happening: shoes are filled up with conkers, the stairs become tangled in a woollen maze. Jem’s sister Verity is certain it is the work of a “nouka”, an ancient creature from local folklore that lives deep down inside the hill. Jem, however, is adamant that there is no such thing. But this small mythical creature, so attuned to the hearts and minds of others, does exist. And, what’s more, it is determined, through mischief and mayhem, to help Jem reignite the spark within himself once more.
