Someone in this house was sad but pretending not to be. Someone – and this thought made a smile curl up on its face – needed some nouka-mischief. When Jem and his family move to the countryside, he doesn’t like his new home one bit. It’s an old cottage on the side of a hill, where strange things keep happening: shoes are filled up with conkers, the stairs become tangled in a woollen maze. Jem’s sister Verity is certain it is the work of a “nouka”, an ancient creature from local folklore that lives deep down inside the hill. Jem, however, is adamant that there is no such thing. But this small mythical creature, so attuned to the hearts and minds of others, does exist. And, what’s more, it is determined, through mischief and mayhem, to help Jem reignite the spark within himself once more.

A good vocabulary is at the heart of 11 plus and Common Entrance exams, such as those set by Durham University's Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), and Granada Learning (GL), also known as NFER. Both the verbal reasoning and comprehension sections of these exams typically contain questions requiring a good understanding of synonyms, antonyms and homophones. The Vocabulary Puzzle Book aims to test a child's knowledge of synonyms, antonyms and homophones in a fun and engaging way with crosswords and word searches. The book contains four sections: Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones and Mixed Puzzles. Each of these sections is organised into three difficulty levels: Easy, Intermediate and Advanced. There is a handy Word Jotter and definition section on every page, which is there to ensure the child is actively looking up words they do not understand. There is also a proverb at the end of each page to enhance their knowledge of the English language. Extensively classroom tested by Eleven Plus Exams, all 11+ Puzzles are perfect for use both in the classroom and at home.

Numerical Reasoning tests are becoming increasingly common in CEM 11+ and common entrance exams. Numerical reasoning questions are typically worded problems requiring comprehension and mathematical manipulation of facts and figures presented. They are designed to measure the ability to interpret, analyse and sometimes draw conclusions from tables and graphs. These problems are often multi-part, requiring several conclusions to be drawn or evaluated from the same initial information, with answers occasionally being contingent on a preceding part answered accurately. Although some mathematical ability is required, the primary element being measured is the ability to reason with the facts. This series of mini-tests is representative of the numerical reasoning section of contemporary multi-discipline 11 plus exams that typically have two papers covering several subjects such as verbal and non-verbal reasoning, comprehensions and numerical reasoning. Numerical reasoning papers usually have a long multi-part worded numerical reasoning problems section and another containing more conventional short, quick-fire maths questions. This publication addresses the former with questions packaged as mini-tests. They are suitable practice for independent schools and new CEM-style 11 plus exams. Extensively road-tested by ElevenPlusExams, these tests are best used as real exam practice to benchmark your child s performance. The on-line service helps identify areas for improvement and, crucially, gauge peer comparison anonymously. They are perfect for use both in the classroom and at home.
