Surface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995): Sergey V. Biryukov,... Surface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)
Sergey V. Biryukov, Yuri V. Gulyaev, Victor V. Krylov, Victor P. Plessky
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Surface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media covers almost all important problems of the interaction of different types of surface acoustic waves with surface inhomogeneities. The problems of surface acoustic wave interaction with periodic topographic gratings widely used in filters and resonators are under careful consideration. The most important results of surface wave scattering by local defects such as grooves, random roughness, elastic wedges are given. Different theoretical approaches and practical rules for solving the surface wave problems are presented.

Floods and Landslides: Integrated Risk Assessment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): Riccardo Casale,... Floods and Landslides: Integrated Risk Assessment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
Riccardo Casale, Claudio Margottini
R1,590 Discovery Miles 15 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A review of such natural disasters as floods and landslides, highlighting the possibility of safe and correct land planning and management by means of a global approach to territory. Since the events deriving from slope and fluvial dynamics are commonly triggered by the same factor, occur at the same time and are closely related, this book analyses floods and slope stability phenomena as different aspects of the same dynamic system: the drainage basin.

Martin Beniston
R2,973 Discovery Miles 29 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is a summary of work undertaken since 1978 when I completed my doctoral dissertation at the Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique (LMO) of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. Since that time, my career has taken me through different countries and institutions, many of which have strong links to climate research in one form or another. It would be difficult to thank the numer ous persons whom I have met in the course of my professional life and who contributed directly (for example as co-authors), or indirectly, to the papers which I have published in various journals. I am particularly indebted to Dr. Gilles Sommeria, who at the time was my thesis supervisor, for his advice during the preparation of my dissertation, and for his enthusiasm which encouraged me to take up a career in scientific research. My thanks also go to Prof. Ernst Augstein, Prof. Hans Hinzpeter, and Prof. Klaus Hasselmann for giving me the opportunity to carry out advanced research at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology, from the early to mid-1980s."

Heavy-Tailed Distributions in Disaster Analysis (Paperback, 2010 ed.): V Pisarenko, M Rodkin Heavy-Tailed Distributions in Disaster Analysis (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
V Pisarenko, M Rodkin
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mathematically, natural disasters of all types are characterized by heavy tailed distributions. The analysis of such distributions with common methods, such as averages and dispersions, can therefore lead to erroneous conclusions. The statistical methods described in this book avoid such pitfalls. Seismic disasters are studied, primarily thanks to the availability of an ample statistical database. New approaches are presented to seismic risk estimation and forecasting the damage caused by earthquakes, ranging from typical, moderate events to very rare, extreme disasters. Analysis of these latter events is based on the limit theorems of probability and the duality of the generalized Pareto distribution and generalized extreme value distribution. It is shown that the parameter most widely used to estimate seismic risk Mmax, the maximum possible earthquake value is potentially non-robust. Robust analogues of this parameter are suggested and calculated for some seismic catalogues. Trends in the costs inferred by damage from natural disasters as related to changing social and economic situations are examined for different regions.

The results obtained argue for sustainable development, whereas entirely different, incorrect conclusions can be drawn if the specific properties of the heavy-tailed distribution and change in completeness of data on natural hazards are neglected.

This pioneering work is directed at risk assessment specialists in general, seismologists, administrators and all those interested in natural disasters and their impact on society."

F.P. Pijpers, Jorgen Christensen-Dalsgaard, C.S. Rosenthal
R4,500 Discovery Miles 45 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the reviews and poster papers presented at the workshop Solar Convection and Oscillations and their Relationship: SCORe '96, held in Arhus, Denmark, May 27 - 31, 1996. The aim of this workshop was to bring together experts in the fields of convection and helioseismology, and to stimulate collaborations and joint research. The participation to this workshop was purposely kept limited in order to provide optimal conditions for informal discussions. In autumn of 199,5 the long-awaited GONG network of solar telescopes became fully operational and the first data already show significant improvement over existing datasets on solar oscillations. Furthermore, in December of 1995 the satellite SOHO was launched which, together with GONG, provides a major step forward in both the quantity and the quality of available solar oscillation data. It is with this in mind that we decided to organize the workshop to prepare for the optimal use of this wealth of data, with which to deepen our understanding of solar structure and specifically, of one of the longest-standing problems in solar and stellar modelling: the treatment of convection.

IUTAM Symposium on Waves in Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Vapour Two-Phase Systems - Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Kyoto,... IUTAM Symposium on Waves in Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Vapour Two-Phase Systems - Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Kyoto, Japan, 9-13 May 1994 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)
Shigeki Morioka, Leen van Wijngaarden
R5,819 Discovery Miles 58 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A IUTAM symposium on 'Waves in Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Vapor Two-Phase Systems' was held in Kyoto, Japan, 9-13 May 1994. Sixty-three scientists partici pated coming from ten countries, and forty-two lectures were presented. The list of participants and the program are included in this volume. The symposium was held in response to the request of the participants in the IUTAM symposium 'Adiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor System' held at Gottingen in 1989. At that time, the need for another symposium in about five years had been indicated by all the participants. This symposium intends to develop the subject of wave properties in more general liquid-gas two-phase systems. Topics in this symposium may be classified as (1) waves in liquid-gas bubble systems including interfacial effects, (2) waves in gas( vapor )-droplets systems, (3) waves in films or stratified systems, (4) waves with liquid-vapor transition, (5) waves with vapor-liquid transition, (6) wave propagation near the critical point and (7) waves with low pressure effect. As for topic (1), experiments, numerical simulations and analytical approaches to waves in bubly liquids were discussed. The importance of interbubble interactions through the liquid-field is now well established at least in terms of potential theory. There was also a progress concerning the well-posedness of governing equations for void waves. For pressure waves there were some new phenomena, such as bubble cluster formation and the occurrence of three-dimensional structures, in addition to a progress from more qualitative studies to quantitative ones."

Space-Time Reference Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Michael Soffel, Ralf Langhans Space-Time Reference Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Michael Soffel, Ralf Langhans
R2,766 Discovery Miles 27 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The high accuracy of modern astronomical spatial-temporal reference systems has made them considerably complex. This book offers a comprehensive overview of such systems. It begins with a discussion of 'The Problem of Time', including recent developments in the art of clock making (e.g., optical clocks) and various time scales. The authors address the definitions and realization of spatial coordinates by reference to remote celestial objects such as quasars. After an extensive treatment of classical equinox-based coordinates, new paradigms for setting up a celestial reference system are introduced that no longer refer to the translational and rotational motion of the Earth. The role of relativity in the definition and realization of such systems is clarified. The topics presented in this book are complemented by exercises (with solutions). The authors offer a series of files, written in Maple, a standard computer algebra system, to help readers get a feel for the various models and orders of magnitude. Beyond astrometry, the main fields of application of high-precision astronomical spatial-temporal reference systems and frames are navigation (GPS, interplanetary spacecraft navigation) and global geodynamics, which provide a high-precision Celestial Reference System and its link to any terrestrial spatial-temporal reference system. Mankind's urgent environmental questions can only be answered in the context of appropriate reference systems in which both aspects, space and time, are realized with a sufficiently high level of accuracy. This book addresses all those interested in high-precision reference systems and the various techniques (GPS, Very Long Baseline Interferometry, Satellite Laser Ranging, Lunar Laser Ranging) necessary for their realization, including the production and dissemination of time signals.

System Earth via Geodetic-Geophysical Space Techniques (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Frank M. Flechtner, Thomas Gruber, Andreas... System Earth via Geodetic-Geophysical Space Techniques (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Frank M. Flechtner, Thomas Gruber, Andreas Guntner, M. Mandea, Markus Rothacher, …
R5,834 Discovery Miles 58 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Earth s magnetic and gravity field play an important role in global and regional geodynamics. Satellite exploration of these fields has received great attention in recent years. Research satellites such as CHAMP and GRACE as well as the ESA explorer GOCE apply new measurement techniques, thus allowing the recovery of the gravitational and magnetic field with unprecedented accuracy and resolution, spatial as well as temporal. Combined with terrestrial observations and computer models, this data will help develop a more detailed understanding of the Earth as a system. In Germany, many of the processing, modelling and interpreting methodologies for these new observation techniques are developed under the umbrella of the R&D-programme GEOTECHNOLOGIEN, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The research projects focus on a better understanding of the spatial and temporal variations in the magnetic and gravity field and their relationship to the dynamics of the Earth s interior and global change processes.

This volume presents the results of the multidisciplinary studies covered by the programme for the period 2005-2008. It includes the following topics: High-accuracy gravity field models, near-real-time provision and usage of CHAMP and GRACE atmospheric sounding, sea level variations, improved GRACE gravity time series and their validation by ocean bottom pressure measurements, integration of space geodetic techniques as a basis for the Global Geodetic-Geophysical Observing System (GGOS), high-resolution magnetic field models and global magnetisation maps and time-variable gravity and surface mass processes."

Nuclear Methods in Mineralogy and Geology - Techniques and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Nuclear Methods in Mineralogy and Geology - Techniques and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
Attila V ertes, S andor Nagy, Karoly Suvegh
R5,868 Discovery Miles 58 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book appears a century after the discovery of radioactivity. It was in 1896, when Henri Becquerel reported his first results about the penetrating radiation, which could darken the packed photographic plates. The initial fascination of radioactivity, e.g., the discovery of new radioactive elements, the first real description of the structure of atoms and their nuclei, the applications of radiotracers, the high sensitivity of activation analysis, etc., was followed by the use of atomic bomb in 1945. The mushroom cloud became a symbol of destructive nuclear power. And even nuclear energy production (which provides about 20% of the world's electricity) is overshadowed by radioactive waste. However, the latest results suggest that the Accelerator-Driven Transmutation Technology (ADTT) will solve this problem, since this technique can decrease the lifetime of the fission products comparatively to the human lifespan. Practical control of fusion may also be possible in the first decades of the next millennium.

Subduction - Insights from Physical Modeling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994): Alexander I. Shemenda Subduction - Insights from Physical Modeling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)
Alexander I. Shemenda
R4,440 Discovery Miles 44 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is devoted to the quantitative physical modeling of subduction and subduction-related processes. It presents a coherent description of the modeling method (including similarity criteria, and a novel applied experimental technique), results from model experiments, theoretical analysis of results on the basis of continuum mechanics, and their geodynamic interpretation. Subduction is modeled in general as well as applied to particular regions using both 2-D and 3-D approaches, with both slab-push and slab-pull driving forces. The modeling covers all stages from subduction initiation to death', different regimes of subduction producing back arc extension and compression, blocking of subduction and jumps of subduction zone, arc-continent collision and continental subduction. This work is for geologists and geophysicists interested in geodynamics of the convergent plate boundaries and in mechanics of the lithosphere.

Modelling Water Flow in Unsaturated Porous Media - Accounting for Nonlinear Permeability and Material Heterogeneity (Hardcover,... Modelling Water Flow in Unsaturated Porous Media - Accounting for Nonlinear Permeability and Material Heterogeneity (Hardcover, 2012)
Adam Szymkiewicz
R3,953 Discovery Miles 39 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book focuses on two issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of flow in unsaturated porous media. In the first part numerical solution of the governing equations is discussed, with particular emphasis on the spatial discretization of highly nonlinear permeability coefficient. The second part deals with large scale flow in heterogeneous porous media of binary structure. Upscaled models are developed and it is shown that the presence of material heterogeneities may give rise to additional non-equilibrium terms in the governing equations or to hysteresis in the averaged constitutive relationships.

Laboratory Astrophysics and Space Research (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): P. Ehrenfreund, C.... Laboratory Astrophysics and Space Research (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
P. Ehrenfreund, C. Krafft, H. Kochan, Valerio Pirronello
R5,886 Discovery Miles 58 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book presents the most recent developments of laboratory studies in astrophysics and space research. The individual chapters review laboratory investigations under simulated space conditions, studies for the design of successful space experiments or for supporting the interpretation of astronomical and space mission recorded data. Related theoretical models, numerical simulations and in situ observations demonstrate the necessity of experimental work on the Earth's surface. The expertise of the contributing scientists covers a broad spectrum and is included in general overviews from fundamental science to recent space technology. The book intends to serve as a reference for researchers and graduate students on the most recent activities and results in laboratory astrophysics, and to give reviews of their applications in astronomy, planetology, cosmochemistry, space research and Solar System exploration.

S. Sengupta
R5,868 Discovery Miles 58 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Structural geology has developed at a very rapid pace in recent years. Evolution of Geological Structures in Micro- to Macro-Scales, covering a wide spectrum of current research in structural geology from the grain scale to the scale of orogenic belts and from the brittle to the ductile field, provides an overview of newly emerging concepts in a single volume. The book covers a wide range of advances in such broad fields as hydraulic factures, normal faults, overthrusts, ductile shear zones, rock fabrics, folds, superposed folds and basement structures.

Interferometry in Radioastronomy and Radar Techniques (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): R.... Interferometry in Radioastronomy and Radar Techniques (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
R. Wohlleben, H. Mattes, Th. Krichbaum
R2,936 Discovery Miles 29 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years aperture synthesis and interferometry have become very powerful tools in radioastronomy. Investigation of distant galaxies, for example, have revealed structures with sizes of less than a kiloparsec. In general, the study of galaxies has benefited from the great power of these techniques. Radar applications have also dramatically increased their quality by using the interferometry principle. Tracking and airborne radar can now determine position and velocity of objects with a much higher accuracy. This book describes in the first six, short chapters the basics of interferometry and aperture synthesis. The following two, long chapters treat the aspects of radioastronomical interferometers and radar applications of interferometry in great detail. The text offers readers a very good opportunity to familiarize themselves with the mathematical background of these very complex techniques. For researchers and students in radioastronomy and electrical engineering.

Spontaneous Formation of Space-Time Structures and Criticality (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): T.... Spontaneous Formation of Space-Time Structures and Criticality (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
T. Riste, David Sherrington
R8,721 Discovery Miles 87 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO Advanced study Institute held at Geilo, Norway between 2 - 12 april 1991. This institute was the eleventh in a series held biannually at Geilo on the subject of phase transitions. It was intended to capture the latest ideas on selforgan ized patterns and criticality. The Institute brought together many lecturers, students and active re searchers in the field from a wide range of NATO and non-NATO countries. The main financial support came from the NATO scientific Affairs Divi sion, but additional support was obtained from the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities (NAVF) and Institutt for energi teknikk. The organizers would like to thank all these contributors for their help in promoting an exciting and rewarding meeting, and in doing so are confident that they echo the appreciation of all the parti cipants. In cooperative, equilibrium systems, physical states are described by spatio-temporal correlation functions. The intimate connection between space and time correlations is especially apparent at the critical point, the second order phase transition, where the spatial range and the decay time of the correlation function both become infinite. The salient features of critical phenomena and the history of the devel opment of this field of science are treated in the first chapter of this book.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis in the Past - A Guide to Techniques in Historical Seismology (Hardcover): Emanuela Guidoboni, John E.... Earthquakes and Tsunamis in the Past - A Guide to Techniques in Historical Seismology (Hardcover)
Emanuela Guidoboni, John E. Ebel
R4,603 Discovery Miles 46 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook defines the discipline of historical seismology by detailing the latest research methodologies for studying historical earthquakes and tsunamis. It describes the various sources that reference seismic phenomena, discusses the critical problems of interpreting such sources, and presents a summary of the theories proposed throughout history to explain the causes of earthquakes. Incorporating examples from a broad geographic region (including Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, central Asia, and the Americas), the text presents numerous interpretations and misinterpretations of historical earthquakes and tsunamis in order to illustrate the key techniques. The authors also tie historical seismology research to archaeological investigations, and demonstrate how new scientific databases and catalogues can be compiled from information derived from the methodologies described. This is an important new reference for scientists, engineers, historians and archaeologists, providing a valuable foundation for understanding the Earth's seismic past and potential future seismic hazard.

Physics and Chemistry of Partially Molten Rocks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): N. Bagdassarov, D.... Physics and Chemistry of Partially Molten Rocks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
N. Bagdassarov, D. Laporte, Alan Bruce Thompson
R2,961 Discovery Miles 29 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Partial melting occurs in a variety of geological environments, from granitic partial melts in the continental crust, to basaltic or carbonate partial melts in the upper mantle. Partial melting is the first stage of magmatism and therefore plays a role of primary importance in the chemical differentiation of the Earth and in the transport of heat to the Earth surface. This special volume contains contributions presented at the symposium `Physics and Chemistry of Partially Molten Systems' of the EUG 9 meeting, held in Strasbourg, France, on March 23-27, 1997. It is intended to provide a current understanding of the physics of partial melting and melt segregation and covers topics such as the rheology of partially molten systems, the topology of partial melts, modelling of partial melting processes, and field observations of partial melts. Audience: This book is intended for a broad readership, including graduate students, specializing in petrology and geodynamics. The volume may be recommended as a textbook for graduate courses on petrology, geomaterial sciences and geophysics.

P. Giese, D. Roeder, R. Nicolich
R4,451 Discovery Miles 44 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributions published in this volume are the re- sults of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Improvement of Joint Interpretation of Geophysical and Geological Data", which took place in Gradisca d'Isonzo in October 1987 and February 1988. Modern computer techniques were applied for geoscien- tific studies in a new dimension. 45 scientists from 7 Euro- pean countries, Canada and the united states of America par- ticipated in the workshop. Interactive discussions and modeling improved the understanding of the very complex structure of the investigated area. We thank all contributors, but especially those pub- lishing in this volume, for their active participation to ensure the success of the meetings. Not to forget to mention the groups of assistants from the Istituto di Minere e Geo- fisica Applicata of the University of Trieste and from the Institute of Geophysics of the Freie Universitat Berlin. Many thanks for their help around the clock. However, a major prerequisite for this success was given by the hospitality of the international Centre for Applied Sciences (ICAS) in the wonderful restored ancient pallazzi Torriani and Pretuna of the town of Gradisca d'Isonzo. Thus, we are thankful to the president of ICAS, Dr. H.R. Dahlafi, and to the town of Gradisca d'Isonzo, especially to the mayor, Signore Travan. The studies carried out in Gradisca d'Isonzo had been supported by a grant of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division and we express our thanks to Dr. L. da Cunha as a steady partner in the background.

Seismic Modelling and Pattern Recognition in Oil Exploration (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992): A.... Seismic Modelling and Pattern Recognition in Oil Exploration (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
A. Sinvhal
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The reasons for writing this book are very simple. We use and teach com puter aided techniques of mathematical simulation and of pattern recogni tion. Life would be much simpler if we had a suitable text book with methods and computer programmes which we could keep referring to. Therefore, we have presented here material that is essential for mathematical modelling of some complex geological situations, with which earth scientists are often confronted. The reader is introduced not only to the essentials of computer modelling, data analysis and pattern recognition, but is also made familiar with the basic understanding with which they can plunge into when solving related and more complex problems. This book first makes a case for seismic stratigraphy and then for pattern recognition. Chapter 1 provides an extensive review of applications of pattern recognition methods in oil exploration. Simulation procedures are presented with examples that are fairly simple to understand and easy to use on the computer. Several geological situations can be formulated and simulated using the Monte Carlo method. The binary lithologic sequences, discussed in Chapter 2, consist of alternating layers of any two of sand, shale and coal."
