"When I am working with colours, I feel like a painter. When I am
working with metal, I feel like a constructor. And when I am
working with toys, I feel like a child." (Felieke van der Leest).
The work of Dutch jewellery and object artist Felieke van der Leest
(born in 1968) expresses the very special affection that she has
for animals. With unbridled fantasy she creates pieces that
ostentatiously, colourfully and playfully revolve around her little
friends. She combines techniques used in textile work, such as
crochet, with valuable metals and plastic toy animals. Within the
international art jewellery scene she has developed her own special
language with which she narrates intelligent and witty stories with
her animal protagonists; her pieces inevitably conjure a smile upon
the faces of those who view them. Characteristic for Van der Leest
is the joy in her work, which is ever present yet sometimes carried
off into childhood. Serious themes in her work are also expressed,
including environmental protection and human approaches to animals.
The current publication comprises jewellery and objects by the
renowned artist from 1996 to the present.
"I want to help doctors, caregivers, and persons with
Alzheimer's disease to understand that this diagnosis is not
necessarily a rapid death sentence."--Charley Schneider
"I now have test results and a neurologist saying I'm improving my
health I hope others will pay attention to supplements to
medications], herbs, nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation, and
environment as ways to better health."--Karen Waterhouse
This small but powerful book offers personal stories and
important insights and information shared by twelve people facing
early-onset Alzheimer's disease and/or other neurodegenerative
disorders. "Early-onset" means that symptoms appear before age
sixty-five, usually when people are in their forties or fifties,
but some as young as age thirty-five. The book is a project of the
support network forMemory, a group that connects individuals and
their families affected by early-onset Alzheimer's and related
diseases. Its aim is to increase emotional, spiritual, and physical
wellbeing through actively and aggressively seeking ways toward
prevention, slowing, and healing.
The editors of this book, Christine Baum Van Ryzin, Mary Kay Baum,
and Rosann Baum Milius, are sisters who saw their mother and aunt
struggle for years with cognitive and physical decline, in an era
when very little was known about symptoms, causes, and treatment
for dementia and other cognitive impairments. In turn, each of the
three Baum sisters has experienced symptoms and diagnosis of
early-onset cognitive changes.
Christine was affected first. Following ten years of undiagnosed
memory problems, tremors, weakness, and personality changes, and
another four years of decline after diagnosis, she--in partnership
with her physician--began to learn ways to heal through a
combination of medical and holistic mind-body-spirit approaches.
She has achieved a remarkable, steady improvement--not a cure, but
a way to regain quality of life and live well with limitations.
Christine's experiences were an enormous aid to her sisters when
they, too, began to experience their symptoms of cognitive
changes.
In addition to personal accounts, "Pathways of Hope" shares
important information about early symptoms, exercise and physical
capacity, dietary considerations, environmental exposures and
toxins, integrative medicine, healing interactions with the natural
world, suggestions for advocacy. Also included is an extensive list
of publications, online resources, and organizations that focus on
Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases.

For decades the American artist Marjorie Schick has been a
pioneering exponent of avant-garde jewellery. Her dynamic objects,
charged with energy, are rooted in the revolutionary late 1960s
European conception of jewellery and transgress the conventional
boundaries of form, material and colour. The artist regards the
human body as 'living sculpture' and constructs works of sculpture
in a wide variety of materials to extend the body. Her works are
often on an excitingly grand scale: a brooch that stretches far
across the wearer's shoulder to occupy the surrounding space; a
neckpiece so large that it creates its own physical environment; an
object that is worn on the shoulders yet envelops the entire head.
Marjorie Schick's jewellery relates to 20th-century abstract art,
especially Constructivism. Here, body sculpture is created that
must be classified as abstract art. Text in English and German.

The Jewish Museum in Prague is home to a variety of silver Jewish
ritual artifacts, from Kiddush cups, Hanukkah lamps, and Torah
decorations, to the dozens of other objects used in observing the
commandments. "Silver Judaica "celebrates this extraordinary
collection with full-color illustrations and detailed explanations
of each of the museum's nearly five hundred pieces. Jaroslav Kuntos
covers each artifact in painstaking detail, highlighting the design
features that indicate a piece's date and place of production.
Kuntos compares and contrasts those pieces made by Jews with those
made by Christians, explaining how--during the seventeenth through
nineteenth centuries, the period when a majority of these artifacts
were made--Jews were excluded from membership in the guilds, and as
a result, many of the ceremonial objects, though used by Jewish
communities, were made by non-Jewish manufacturers or artisans on
commission. A fascinating survey of superior craftsmanship, "Silver
Judaica "will appeal to students and scholars of art history and
religious studies alike.
