Me diverti mucho creandolo, y ahora me estoy divirtiendo mucho compartiendolo.
The Jewish Museum in Prague is home to a variety of silver Jewish ritual artifacts, from Kiddush cups, Hanukkah lamps, and Torah decorations, to the dozens of other objects used in observing the commandments. "Silver Judaica "celebrates this extraordinary collection with full-color illustrations and detailed explanations of each of the museum's nearly five hundred pieces. Jaroslav Kuntos covers each artifact in painstaking detail, highlighting the design features that indicate a piece's date and place of production. Kuntos compares and contrasts those pieces made by Jews with those made by Christians, explaining how--during the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, the period when a majority of these artifacts were made--Jews were excluded from membership in the guilds, and as a result, many of the ceremonial objects, though used by Jewish communities, were made by non-Jewish manufacturers or artisans on commission. A fascinating survey of superior craftsmanship, "Silver Judaica "will appeal to students and scholars of art history and religious studies alike.

A celebration of South Carolina silver Palmetto Silver is the first publication in more than a dozen years to showcase the riches of South Carolina silve r. While silver is a precious metal that can quickly be converted to currency, it has a much more significant cultural value. From utilitarian flatware to decorative trophies, the many pieces included in this book provide an intriguing picture of the individuals and history connected with the crafting of silver wares in the Palmetto State. Based on a 2002 exhibition by the same name at the University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum, Palmetto Silver is the result of several years of research and draws heavily on items from private collections throughout the South. While much of the previous research has concentrated primarily on Charleston silver made prior to the Civil War, the silver featured in this book highlights the work of South Carolina craftsmen from colonial times to the twentieth century. Although many historians previously theorized that most silver items used in the South were imported from merchants and workshops in New England or even from Great Britain, Palmetto Silver presents recent findings that indicate there were many highly skilled silversmiths working throughout the state during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. An introductory essay by Rodger Stroup, director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, sets the historical context for these objects and provides insight into the important role they had in society. Palmetto Silver includes a comprehensive listing of 216 objects, 69 color images, a directory of silversmiths and merchants, and an illustrated listing of makers' marks. Among the diverse array of objects included and illustrated are military swords, shotguns, walking canes, tea services, award trophies, and presentation pieces. One outstanding example of featured craftsmanship is a hand-chased cream or milk pitcher that was presented to the city of Columbia's African American fire brigade in 1846. Palmetto Silver is a treasure trove of such artifacts.

Showcases Alexandra Albini's unique, hand-made jewellery pieces. Feminine shapes often embrace large baroque pearls or precious gems that are not cut according to conventional standards but are roughly shaped or left in their natural crystal habit. The gems are chosen for the beauty of their colours and for their inclusions, valued because they add a natural authenticity to the stone. After all, aren't inclusions nature's fingerprint, worthy of being celebrated rather than condemned as flaws? These are the principal ingredients of Alexandra Albini's jewellery collection, as it is revealed in the pages of this book through the empathic eye of celebrated photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri. Text in English and Italian.
From the author of Women from the Ankle Down comes a lively cultural biography of diamonds, which explores our society's obsession with the world's most brilliant gemstone and the real-world characters who make them shine. "A diamond is forever." Who among us doesn't recognize this phrase and, with it, the fascination that these shiny gemstones hold in our collective imagination as symbols of royalty, stars, and eternal love? But who gave us this catchphrase? Where do these gemstones and their colorful legacies originate? How did they become our culture's symbol of engagement and marriage? Why have they retained their coveted status throughout the centuries? Rachelle Bergstein's cultural biography of the diamond illuminates the enticing, often surprising story of our society's enduring obsession with the hardest gemstone-and the people who have worked tirelessly to ensure its continued allure. From the South African mines where most diamonds have been sourced since the late 1890s to the companies who have fought to monopolize them; from the stars who have dazzled in them to the people behind the scenes who have carefully crafted our understanding of their value-Brilliance and Fire offers a glittering history of the world's most coveted gemstone and its greatest champions and most colorful enthusiasts. Brilliance and Fire is illustrated with 16 pages of color photographs.

Very rarely does a jewellery artist manage to find new pictorial worlds of such a personal nature during the course of their creative work so freely and unencumbered as Daniel Kruger (born 1951, South Africa). His experiments with the most diverse materials, decoration, forms and structures testify to an exuberant creativity for which he was honoured with the renowned Herbert Hoffmann Award for Art Jewellery in 1987 and 2005. Daniel Kruger uses found objects of every kind, or quotes historical forms and decoration. The unusual combinations of materials as well as new interpretations of techniques used in handcraft and textile work unexpectedly, yet invariably, lend his jewellery pieces new perspectives and aesthetic pleasure as well as a decidedly erotic quality, as he himself says. The works illustrate Daniel Kruger's curiosity with unconventional techniques and materials; they are also an expression of his awareness of nature and artificiality, history and tales, tradition and the present: sometimes ironic, at times restrained, but frequently also opulent and sensual. Text in English and German.

Gail Bird (Santo Domingo/Laguna) and Yazzie Johnson (Navajo) have been making jewellery together since 1972 and are considered among the first rank of Native American artists. SHARED IMAGES is a retrospective of their career in the decorative arts, spanning the early 1970s to the present. The jewellery creations of Johnson and Bird are frequently dramatic, always wearable, and compositionally arresting. Their use of non-traditional stones and uncommon juxtapositions of materials has earned them a place in the world of contemporary art alongside the most influential jewellers of their generation. Drawing inspiration from prehistoric pictograph and petroglyph sites, Johnson and Bird have developed a distinctive set of designs that continue to inspire contemporary creations. SHARED IMAGES emphasises the forty-six thematic belts that have won the artists well-deserved acclaim at Santa Fe's annual Indian Arts Market. The book documents Johnson and Bird's collaborative process and features a range of exemplary pieces shown in museums and galleries across the country. Published in association with the Heard Museum.
Electroforming is a technique used by jewellery makers as well as ceramicists and glass artists. It allows the manufacture of delicate and/or irregular shapes that would be difficult to achieve by other means, as well as repetition pieces (using moulds), which can also be difficult to make. For jewellery, electroforming means that relatively lightweight and delicate shapes can still be made rigid and strong, and that fastenings, etc., can be attached to difficult or irregular shapes. It also allows intricate details to be faithfully reproduced (coating a spider's web in gold to make jewellery, for example).
The spectacular hoards of late antique silver - Mildenhall, Thetford, Sevso - discovered since the middle of the last century have aroused much interest in this luxury art form. But what did these pieces mean to their owners, and why was silverware so important in late antiquity? Silver and Society in Late Antiquity examines such questions through an integrated, synthetic analysis of the history of silver in the Roman empire between 300 and 650 AD, focusing upon the cultural significance of this luxury art form in all its different manifestations--sacred, imperial and domestic. Ruth Leader-Newby looks at a wide range of objects from both the eastern and western halves of the Roman empire - including Britain - in order to determine silver's role in the wider sphere of late antique visual culture, asking questions about the relative significance of individual forms of artistic production, and their relationship with each other. In doing so, key issues for the artistic and cultural history of late antiquity are raised - the use of the imperial image, the visual construction of the sacred in Christianity, the cohesive social role of elite intellectual culture, and the Christianization of the domestic sphere. As this book demonstrates, when studied in its historical context, silver can substantially enrich our understanding of late Roman art and culture.

Movement came to be the main theme of Friedrich Becker's artistic work. In the early 1960s, he began to create the first kinetic jewellery objects that remain constantly in motion due to natural body movements. Becker is the inventor of kinetic jewellery. The ideas behind his small sculptures, having the intention of a constructivist language of forms, are also translated into his large-scale sculptures. This documentation is the first survey of the many-sided oeuvre of this significant artist: all areas of his work are represented from the 1950s to his unexpected death in May 1997.
