Professor Sir Donald Tovey's celebrated bar-by-bar analysis of Beethoven's 32 Pianoforte Sonatasremains a key text for pianists, students, scholars and music lovers. Intended as a companion to the ABRSM's Complete Pianoforte Sonatas edition - edited by Harold Craxton but with each work prefaced by Tovey's practical and critical notes - the book contains a succinct and illuminating summary of the author's analytical approach before each sonata is dealt with in detail. This new imprint is prefaced with an introduction by Dr Barry Cooper, Lecturer in the Music Department of Manchester University. Tovey's text is reproduced faithfully; however, Dr Cooper has added footnotes to correct errors of fact or to qualify conclusions drawn by Tovey that the passage of time, since the book was first published in 1931, has suggested might be questionable. With the re-issue of this book, Tovey's famed insight, commonsense and wit will continue to enlighten and entertain the author's devotees, as well as a new generation of performers and students.
(Schott). The Classical Piano Method is ideal for adults and young people looking to learn the piano from scratch, or for those returning to the piano after a substantial break from playing. You will learn traditional, classic technique, and will be introduced to interesting, varied and well-known classical pieces right from the outset. The method is friendly and is carefully designed to progress in small manageable steps, beginning with simple fingering patterns and exercises, moving onto some of the most beautiful melodies and pieces from the baroque, classical and romantic eras: such as Ode to Joy, Fur Elise and the Blue Danube Waltz . This repertoire collection provides 45 extra pieces explicitly linked to the levels of progression (starting with beginners) found in Method Book 1, providing a wider range of beautiful pieces for the solo pianist. The pieces are drawn mainly from the classical repertoire, and also include a number of folk and contemporary pieces in interesting and varied arrangements.

It will give you the confidence to learn repertoire more effectively and prepare for the very real demands of busking through all those unrehearsed situations which are a regular feature of the jazz musician's life. This book contains a set of graded practice tests covering a wide range of jazz styles. The Steinway-once called the "instrument of the immortals"-is more than the preeminent American piano. It is also a symbol of Old World craftsmanship combined with American capitalism, of technological innovation, and of remarkable family management. This authoritative and entertaining book tells the story of the Steinway piano company and the people behind it. The first book based on the rich archive of Steinway business and family papers at LaGuardia Community College in New York, as well as on interviews with family members and company employees in the United States, Germany, and England, Steinway & Sons describes the making and marketing of an American cultural icon. Founded in New York in 1853 by a German immigrant, the Steinway company quickly rose to prominence on the strength of the distinctive "Steinway sound." For five generations Steinways steered their company in the face of vigorous domestic and foreign competition, bitter labor disputes, temperamental musicians, a fluctuating economy, and wars. Members of the Gilded Age elite, the family also contended with adultery, alcoholism, emotional depression, and long court battles over money. Lieberman discusses the company town the Steinways built in Queens in the 1870s to "escape the machinations of the anarchists and socialists" in the city; the decision to manufacture in both New York and Hamburg, which led to Steinway factories supplying both sides in World War II; the improvements in piano technology that made the Steinway the envy of other piano makers; the company's creative marketing techniques, such as booking celebrated European pianists into American concert halls; the competition from the Japanese-owned Yamaha company; and the sale of the financially troubled company to CBS in 1972. Weaving together themes from social, music, business, labor, and immigrant history, and lavishly illustrated with pictures from the Steinway archive, Steinway & Sons is a rich narrative that casts new light on American cultural history and on a unique family enterprise.
In 1725 Johann Sebastian Bach wrote two keyboard suites for his wife Anna Magdalena, whom he married in 1721. These became the first entries in a book in which, over the next twenty years, were gathered together both keyboard pieces and vocal works by Johann Sebastian and his two sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian as well as such composers as Couperin, Boehm, Petzold and Hasse. An illuminating portrait of domestic music-making in the Bach family during the Leipzig period, this authoritative new edition of the book contains the keyboard pieces only, including the well-known Minuet in G and Prelude in C, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Part I, and more substantial items such as C. P. E. Bach's Solo per il Cembalo in E flat (early versions of Partitas Nos. 3 and 6 and French Suites Nos. 1 and 2 are excluded). This first-class edition, providing an important and attractive introduction to the Baroque style, also contains invaluable advice on appropriate tempo, phrasing, articulation and ornamentation in accordance with contemporary performance practice.
Robert Vandall's piano duets have been favorites of students and teachers for several years. Many have been chosen for contest and festival lists. Both primo and secondo are skillfully crafted to be of equal difficulty and equal interest. Melodies are shared or passed between performers. These wonderful collections will motivate duet teams to continue making music together. Book 1 titles: Central Park Ride * Chanson * Hiking Song * On Our Way * Pirouette * Village Dance.
This work is part of a series of comprehensive practical guides for the solo piano. A reference book for all levels - amateur, student, teacher and professional - the purpose of the series is to help pianists with their choice of music to suit their own styles and capabilities, and to discuss their technical and interpretive demands. This volume provides a complete survey of Chopin's music for solo piano, including a graded list of his works together with detailed suggestions for study and performance. An extended introduction places Chopin in the context of his time, distancing him from the romantic misconceptions that have dogged his reputation through successive generations.
