This delightful collection of Preludes provides an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque period. The album is grouped in three sets of six each: the first comes from the Wilhelm Friedemann Bach Notebook, compiled by Johann Sebastian for his eldest son; the second, which has been preserved in copies made by his pupils, was probably composed by Johann Sebastian; and the third comes from the collection of Johann Peter Kellner, of which only Nos. 5 and 6 are known to be written by Johann Sebastian.

Bach's Inventions & Sinfonias are published as part of ABRSM's 'Signature' Series - a series of authoritative performing editions of standard keyboard works, prepared from original sources by leading scholars. Includes informative introductions and performance notes.
Bach composed these Inventions in 1722/3 for the instruction in keyboard playing and composition of his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, who was then just 12. Richard Jones's edition of these pieces is also available from ABRSM in a 'Signature' Series edition, where they are combined with the (three-part) Sinfonias and given more textual commentary.
The Soviet composer Gliere was very much influenced by the 19th-century Russian romantic tradition. As the short pieces in this album demonstrate, he was particularly skilful at expressing a melody in simple and direct terms while at the same time creating a colourful and romantic picture.
Brahms' Six Piano Pieces are published as part of ABRSM's 'Signature' Series - a series of authoritative performing editions of standard keyboard works, prepared from original sources by leading scholars. Includes informative introductions and performance notes.
This delightful set of practical miniature arrangements of hymn tunes for organ is useful throughout the church year and is accessible to the average church organist. These short pieces not only enhance church services, but also prove invaluable to the church musician looking for something fresh to use during services. The styles of miniatures, which last anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute in duration, are sufficiently varied to maintain interest: some settings are meditative, while others are fanfares, and they can be used during various parts of the service. The book includes a preface that discusses practical usage of the miniatures, citing some examples from te Velde's own experience. It also includes a liturgical index and an index of first lines for the convenience of the organist.

Lennie Tristano was one of jazz's most extraordinary innovators, possessing a superb piano technique and an awesome musical imagination. Unheralded by the general public, the blind pianist's work was revered by many jazz greats including the legendary Charlie Parker. Tristano's persuasive personality made him an ideal teacher, and he proved that (against the accepted theory of the time) jazz improvisation could be taught. His guidance played a big part in the development of many instrumentalists including saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh and double-bassist Peter Ind. It is Ind's long, direct involvement with his subject that makes this such a revealing book: the story of an English musician going to New York to study with a neglected Jazz giant. In the process, Tristano's genius is examined and his reputation revalued, with Ind making a persuasive case for the pianist to be placed at the centre of jazz developments in the mid-20th century.
"In his autobiographical "Notes of a Pianist," nineteenth-century New Orleans piano virtuoso and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk shares with us his impressions as he travels through North and South America. His concert schedule and the number of cities he visits in a year during the age of locomotive and steamship would be daunting to even the most travel-hardened jet-age road warrior. Whether at a railroad siding worrying about the fate of his precious Chickering concert grand pianos before the Civil War battle of Gettysburg, fleeing San Francisco for South America because of a concocted scandal, or tending the wounded during the revolution in Lima, Peru, Gottschalk puts the reader in the middle of the action. His writing style is like his music--bold, colorful, romantic, virtuosic, and dramatic."--Lambert Orkis, Grammy Award-winning pianist "Having grown up in opera-mad New Orleans in a household in which Creole tunes were probably common currency, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, after finishing school in Paris, gave free rein to his captivating and spontaneous fantasy and melodic charm. As Frederick Starr convincingly shows, his music was brilliant and original. And it leaves, when sympathetically presented, an indelible impression of his genius."--Lawrence Gushee, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, author of "Pioneers of Jazz: The Story of the Creole Band" "Over and above all [the] purely sensuous aspects of [Gottschalk's] pianism . . . Was the presence of a genuinely musical soul. This was what most commanded the admiration of his friend and mentor Hector Berlioz: his musicianship, his taste, and his fine sense of proportion."--From the editor's Prelude
