Documents the craft of the organbuilder Gerhard Brunzema
(1927-1992) in terms of the organs he built and how his instruments
and his approach to organbuilding had an influence on music
history. Divided into two parts, Part I contains essays by people
who knew Brunzema and his work, and documents his skill both in the
restoration of historically significant instruments in Europe, as
well as in the building of new organs in his own style throughout
the world. Also included in this section are two musical
compositions in his memory by Gerhard Krapf and Barrie Cabena. Part
II details the organs themselves during the three phases of his
career: in Germany (1954-1971) with his partner Jurgen Ahrend; in
Quebec, Canada (1972-1979) with Casavant Freres; and in Ontario
(1980-1992) in his own workshop. This section features a complete
listing of all the organs he built, descriptions of seventy organs,
and a complete technical documentation of one of his instruments.
Also included are three articles by Brunzema, proposals for organs
that were never built, an annotated discography, a listing of the
published photographs of his organs, videography, bibliography, 16
black and white photographs and 41 line drawings.
'To Richter (no first name necessary), warm greetings to the best
pianist in the Soviet Union - indeed in the whole world.' Prokofiev
Throughout a life dedicated to music, Richter maintained a stubborn
silence about his own ideals and aspirations. Here at last he opens
up his heart in these exceptional interviews with Bruno
Monsaingeon, who became close to Richter not long before the
pianist's death in 1995. These conversations take us on a journey
which begins with Richter's childhood memories, follows his early
career and his development into 'an artist of the people', and
finally charts his rise to international acclaim. Richter's
personal notebooks, kept for nearly thirty years, constitute an
unparalleled witness to the music of our time. The pianist writes
with precision, humour and clarity and is uninhibitedly himself.
These are the private thoughts of a nonconformist, one of the
greatest performers of the century, yet one whose life was
inextricably bound to the history of the USSR.
In this first full-scale study of performance practice in Haydn's keyboard music, Bernard Harrison confronts the important issues facing any performer of Haydn's keyboard music, and at the same time develops some of the recurring controversial questions in broader research on Haydn's oeuvre. 'a major contribution to Haydn scholarship. Potential performers of the composer's keyboard music will find a commanding and well-documented exposition of the problems facing him or her; at the same time the volume will be of fundamental value to those interested in Haydn's music who are not primarily practitioners ... comprehensive and authoritative.' David Wyn Jones
Matching folio to the eagerly awaited Einaudi album arranged for
solo piano. Einaudi is one of the great composers of our time and
his music, full of melody and hypnotic patterns makes for a
uniquely satisfying playing experience.
Art Tatum was the greatest virtuoso performer in the history of jazz piano; his technique overwhelmed almost every jazz player who heard him and caused classical virtuosos to take notice. Through extensive interviews with Tatum's friends and fellow musicians, James Lester captures the complexities of this remarkable talent and the vibrant jazz world of the 1930s and 1940s in which he played.
The ever-increasing number of performances of Bach's music is a
sign of its enduring vitality. But perhaps no other composer is
subject to such a wide diversity of interpretation--assessing the
merits of these many interpretations and unravelling the sources
and documents on which they are based can be extremely difficult
for the modern performer. In this important book, Paul Badura-Skoda
draws on forty years of studying and performing Bach to present
startling new insights into many different aspects of Bach's music.
He looks at rhythm, tempo, articulation, and dynamics; examines the
instruments for which Bach's music was intended, and considers
problems of sonority. He then discusses ornamentation in depth,
analyzing each of the signs and symbols used by Bach, and argues
that much of Bach's ornamentation in current performance is
monotonous and fails to reflect the actual Baroque style. Sometimes
contentious, always stimulating, Badura-Skoda's book conveys a
passion for an informed interpretation of Bach's music based on a
recognition and respect for Bach's actual intentions. Copiously
illustrated with musical examples, the book will take its place as
a standard work for all students and performers of Bach's
ever-popular keyboard music.
Just as musical etudes focus on the development of skills and
address the technical problems encountered in keyboard literature,
the "etudes" in Stewart Gordon's new book also focus on ideas which
prepare piano teachers for meeting the problems encountered in
piano performing and teaching. This major new collection on the
piano teacher's art opens with an assessment of the role of the
piano teacher, and goes on to explore various types of students and
the challenge each presents: the moderately talented, but
ambitious, student; the late beginner; the unusually gifted.
Drawing on thirty years of teaching and performing, Gordon then
bring fresh ideas to bear on the often-discussed areas of
inner-hearing, pulse regulation, improvisation, sight-reading, and
collaborative music making. There are sections on performance
procedures, memorizing, pedalling, and historical performance
practices; a carefully-balanced consideration of the role of the
piano student and teacher; and realistic looks at the problems
facing the profession today, the dynamics of a performing career,
and the stages through which musicians' careers often pass.
Designed to open up new avenues of inquiry, to provoke discussion
and creative thinking, and to challenge and motivate students,
these essays will be vital reading for all serious piano students
and teachers.
(Educational Piano Library). This first book in a series of five
piano technique books presents short, 4-measure exercises with
helpful text imagery ( Warm-Ups ), and brief etudes. The skills
emphasized in the Warm-Ups are given a musical context in the
Etudes that follow them. Each Warm-Up and Etude in the book has its
own original accompaniment, available on a separate CD or GM disk.
Piano Technique Book 1 focuses on basic skills at the piano: good
posture & hand position; creating a beautiful tone; attention
to silence; playing forte and piano; playing detached tones; and
playing connected notes.
The very thought of aural, especially in examinations, strikes fear
into the heart of many young pianists and instrumentalists. But
aural should not be an occasional optional extra, it's something to
be developing all the time, because having a good ear will help you
to improve as a musician more than any other single musical skill.
Improve your aural! is designed to take the fear out of aural.
Through fun listening activities, boxes to fill in and practice

clapping, playing your instrument, writing music down, improvising
and composing. This edition supports ABRSM syllabus requirements
from 2010, ensuring success in the aural test of graded exams. The

Thad Carhart never realized there was a gap in his life until he happened upon Desforges Pianos, a demure little shopfront in his Pairs neighborhood that seemed to want to hide rather than advertise its wares. Like Alice in Wonderland, he found his attempts to gain entry rebuffed at every turn. An accidental introduction finally opened the door to the quartier’s oddest hangout, where locals — from university professors to pipefitters — gather on Friday evenings to discuss music, love, and life over a glass of wine.
Luc, the atelier’s master, proves an excellent guide to the history of this most gloriously impractical of instruments. A bewildering variety passes through his restorer’s hands: delicate ancient pianofortes, one perhaps the onetime possession of Beethoven. Great hulking beasts of thunderous voice. And the modest piano “with the heart of a lion” that was to become Thad’s own.
What emerges is a warm and intuitive portrait of the secret Paris — one closed to all but a knowing few. The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is the perfect book for music lovers, or for anyone who longs to recapture a lost passion.

piano style ever invented. With over 50+ stride techniques and 150+
carefully explained examples plus performance tips, this book shows

With a total of 8 million records sold, piano sensation Jim
Brickman continues with a volume of songs of faith and inspiration.
This collection contains 22 selections, featuring songs from the
album Faith (in print for the first time) plus 9 other
inspirational tunes.
The eight books cover the requirements for ABRSM's sight-reading
tests at each of Grades 1 to 8, and include: *many short,
characterful pieces to sight-read, in a range of approachable
musical styles *warm-up and technical exercises, to establish basic
hand shapes and finger patterns within each key *simple
musicianship exercises in which students can explore ideas and
familiarize themselves further with the 'feel' of each key *longer
solo pieces and a duet, for additional sight-reading practice or to
learn quickly and play through for fun
These pieces are of tremendous charm, and make ideal tutorial
material as they are very easy, with simple pedal parts. They are
ideal as quiet voluntaries for liturgical use.
