Throughout, the book features numerous Concepts to Consider (focusing on conceptual learning) and Activities to Explore (which build on the Concepts and emphasize ways to strengthen the kinesthetic aspects of learning). The author discusses nearly every aspect encountered by the beginner, from appropriate goals and good playing habits to the basics of how people learn and how the piano works. Documents the craft of the organbuilder Gerhard Brunzema (1927-1992) in terms of the organs he built and how his instruments and his approach to organbuilding had an influence on music history. Divided into two parts, Part I contains essays by people who knew Brunzema and his work, and documents his skill both in the restoration of historically significant instruments in Europe, as well as in the building of new organs in his own style throughout the world. Also included in this section are two musical compositions in his memory by Gerhard Krapf and Barrie Cabena. Part II details the organs themselves during the three phases of his career: in Germany (1954-1971) with his partner Jurgen Ahrend; in Quebec, Canada (1972-1979) with Casavant Freres; and in Ontario (1980-1992) in his own workshop. This section features a complete listing of all the organs he built, descriptions of seventy organs, and a complete technical documentation of one of his instruments. Also included are three articles by Brunzema, proposals for organs that were never built, an annotated discography, a listing of the published photographs of his organs, videography, bibliography, 16 black and white photographs and 41 line drawings.
In this first full-scale study of performance practice in Haydn's keyboard music, Bernard Harrison confronts the important issues facing any performer of Haydn's keyboard music, and at the same time develops some of the recurring controversial questions in broader research on Haydn's oeuvre. 'a major contribution to Haydn scholarship. Potential performers of the composer's keyboard music will find a commanding and well-documented exposition of the problems facing him or her; at the same time the volume will be of fundamental value to those interested in Haydn's music who are not primarily practitioners ... comprehensive and authoritative.' David Wyn Jones

Well-known music includes The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams and 'Consider yourself' from Oliver! There are also lots of unsung melodies to be discovered, like 'Clog Dance' from La fille mal gardee and a traditional Serbian folk tune Djurdjevka. From the orchestra to the opera and from folk to jazz, there's a world of music at your fingertips! Perfect for learners exploring repertoire for the own-choice piece in ABRSM's Performance Grade exams
Art Tatum was the greatest virtuoso performer in the history of jazz piano; his technique overwhelmed almost every jazz player who heard him and caused classical virtuosos to take notice. Through extensive interviews with Tatum's friends and fellow musicians, James Lester captures the complexities of this remarkable talent and the vibrant jazz world of the 1930s and 1940s in which he played.
The ever-increasing number of performances of Bach's music is a sign of its enduring vitality. But perhaps no other composer is subject to such a wide diversity of interpretation--assessing the merits of these many interpretations and unravelling the sources and documents on which they are based can be extremely difficult for the modern performer. In this important book, Paul Badura-Skoda draws on forty years of studying and performing Bach to present startling new insights into many different aspects of Bach's music. He looks at rhythm, tempo, articulation, and dynamics; examines the instruments for which Bach's music was intended, and considers problems of sonority. He then discusses ornamentation in depth, analyzing each of the signs and symbols used by Bach, and argues that much of Bach's ornamentation in current performance is monotonous and fails to reflect the actual Baroque style. Sometimes contentious, always stimulating, Badura-Skoda's book conveys a passion for an informed interpretation of Bach's music based on a recognition and respect for Bach's actual intentions. Copiously illustrated with musical examples, the book will take its place as a standard work for all students and performers of Bach's ever-popular keyboard music.
Just as musical etudes focus on the development of skills and address the technical problems encountered in keyboard literature, the "etudes" in Stewart Gordon's new book also focus on ideas which prepare piano teachers for meeting the problems encountered in piano performing and teaching. This major new collection on the piano teacher's art opens with an assessment of the role of the piano teacher, and goes on to explore various types of students and the challenge each presents: the moderately talented, but ambitious, student; the late beginner; the unusually gifted. Drawing on thirty years of teaching and performing, Gordon then bring fresh ideas to bear on the often-discussed areas of inner-hearing, pulse regulation, improvisation, sight-reading, and collaborative music making. There are sections on performance procedures, memorizing, pedalling, and historical performance practices; a carefully-balanced consideration of the role of the piano student and teacher; and realistic looks at the problems facing the profession today, the dynamics of a performing career, and the stages through which musicians' careers often pass. Designed to open up new avenues of inquiry, to provoke discussion and creative thinking, and to challenge and motivate students, these essays will be vital reading for all serious piano students and teachers.
(Educational Piano Library). This first book in a series of five piano technique books presents short, 4-measure exercises with helpful text imagery ( Warm-Ups ), and brief etudes. Piano Technique Book 1 focuses on basic skills at the piano: good posture & hand position; creating a beautiful tone; attention to silence; playing forte and piano; playing detached tones; and playing connected notes.
