Chopin's E minor and F minor Piano Concertos played a vital role in his career as a composer-pianist. This Handbook reevaluates them so that their many outstanding qualities can be fully appreciated. It describes their genesis, Chopin's own performances and his use of them as a teacher. A survey of their critical, editorial and performance histories follows, in preparation for an engaging narrative analysis of the concertos as embodied in sound. The final chapter investigates Chopin's enigmatic "third concerto", the Allegro de concert.

Beethoven's Piano Music: A Listener's Guide, by Victor Lederer,
will help the motivated reader understand this popular but often
knotty music. The bulk of the text consists of a
movement-by-movement analysis of the 32 sonatas, fascinating for
their individuality and for the way they trace the master's
development. In addition to the sonatas, Lederer also takes the
reader through the most significant of the variations. The greatest
is the Diabelli, Beethoven's monumental takeoff on a trivial theme,
but three more sets, the 32 Variations in C minor, the Variations
on an Original Theme, Op. 34, and the "Eroica" Variations, Op. 35,
are also of the highest quality. And the Bagatelles, Opp. 33, 119,
and 126, are short but strong studies that display different
aspects of Beethoven's musical personality. Finally, Lederer
discusses the five piano concertos in detail, showing the influence
of the sublime models of Mozart in the first three concertos, with
Beethoven boldly finding his own voice with the beloved Fourth and
Fifth Concertos. The book comes with a Naxos CD containing
performances by pianist Jeno Jando that illustrate the text.

Schumann's Fantasie, Op. 17 is one of the finest examples of Romantic piano music. In a rounded picture of this major keyboard work, Nicholas Marston first traces the fascinating history of its composition, drawing on many of Schumann's letters to Clara Wieck and to his publisher, and examining the few surviving sketches: To whom was the work really dedicated? Was the celebrated opening movement perhaps intended as an independent composition? Schumann's own critical writings provide vital insights into his ideas on genre and the relationship between the Fantasie and the many generic and descriptive titles that the composer gave the work before publication. Every aspect of the work is covered, providing the performer, the listener or the student with an understanding not only of the Fantasie, but of Schumann himself as a composer.
The piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition is perhaps the most
widely known of Musorgsky's compositions, especially as
orchestrated by Ravel. This informative and wide-ranging guide
places the original piano work in the context of Russian cultural
life, considering in particular the work of the artist Victor
Hartman, creator of the pictures which inspired Musorgsky's
composition. A detailed synopsis takes the reader through each
piece in turn, describing the forms, the external references, and
drawing connections with Musorgsky's other musical works. Chapters
on the music itself consider, for example, folk elements, key
relations and motivic structures. Dr Russ also describes the fate
of the work in the hands of editors and performers and closes by
surveying the best of the orchestrations, particularly that by
Ravel. The book is illustrated with photographs of the existing
pictures from Hartman's exhibition.
