Bullet Proof - The James Dalton Story (Paperback): Mark Keohane Bullet Proof - The James Dalton Story (Paperback)
Mark Keohane
R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

‘Friendships, foes, murders, assassinations, the inglorious underworld and the glorious world of Springbok rugby ... this is the 1995 World Cup winner James Dalton’s life story’

As we opened the car door to leave in the early hours of the morning, I heard a gun shot. What followed was the most haunting of cries: all he could muster was a pained and defeated ‘aaaah’ I swung around to see the gunmen, leaning out of the moving car, put more bullets into his slumped body.

It all lasted no more than 10 seconds but it felt like an eternity from the moment I heard the gun shot till getting him into the back of the car to rush him to the hospital. He didn’t say anything. He couldn’t say anything. I watched the colour in his face disappear. I watched the blood flow slow down and I was powerless to do anything. I can’t remember what I said or was saying. I just wanted him to fight but the bullets had done all the fighting. He was dying while I was watching and by the time I carried him into the emergency operating theatre his body was lifeless.

My best friend was dead. He had been assassinated.

Never Waste A Good Hysterectomy (Paperback): Melanie Verwoerd Never Waste A Good Hysterectomy (Paperback)
Melanie Verwoerd
R282 Discovery Miles 2 820 In Stock

“I’m a very level-headed person,” Melanie Verwoerd told the gynaecological oncologist. “However, I feel like my dogs during a thunderstorm. I’m desperately trying to find somewhere to hide, but everywhere I go, it is still there.”

A week earlier, another gynaecologist had paused mid-sentence during a routine ultrasound examination. Something big was wrong. Blood tests showed elevated tumour markers and scans revealed a huge ovarian tumour with at least a 70% chance of being cancerous. A few days later a radical hysterectomy was performed. As the terror grew, the only way for her to make sense of what was happening was to write. This book is the brutally honest reflection of the year that followed the operation.

The physical recovery was painful, messy and took much longer than expected. However, even more surprising was the deeper, soul-searching questions that the procedure brought to the fore. The physical crisis triggered an intense journey of self-reflection and discovery. It required courageous investigations of the darkest corners of her psyche and forced her to face many of the fears that had comfortably lived there for decades. It also threw a spotlight on the relationship she – and many women – have with their bodies, sex, money as well as the role of intergenerational trauma. In the process, Melanie also had to come to terms with the rage, pain and grief of the hysterectomy specifically and many other losses in general, whilst investigating what she wanted to do with the second part of her life.

Although this book was triggered by a hysterectomy, it is not intended just for those who have had or are going to have a similar experience. It is also meant for every woman who comes to a crossroad and has to reassess her life.

And although it is brutally honest, it is also hope giving, and insists that women’s voices be heard.

Blame Me On History - 60th Anniversary Edition (Paperback, Revised): William Bloke Modisane Blame Me On History - 60th Anniversary Edition (Paperback, Revised)
William Bloke Modisane
R280 R224 Discovery Miles 2 240 Save R56 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Feeling an exile in the country of his birth, the talented journalist and leading black intellectual Bloke Modisane left South Africa in 1959. It was shortly after the apartheid government had bulldozed Sophiatown, the township of his childhood. His biting indictment of apartheid, Blame Me on History, was published in 1963 – and banned shortly afterwards.

Modisane offers a harrowing account of the degradation and oppression faced daily by black South Africans. His penetrating observations and insightful commentary paint a vivid picture of what it meant to be black in apartheid South Africa. At the same time, his evocative writing transports the reader back to a time when Sophiatown still teemed with life.

This 60th-anniversary edition of Modisane’s autobiography serves as an example of passionate resistance to the scourge of racial discrimination in our country, and is a reminder not to forget our recent past.

Elon Musk - Risking It All (Paperback, Updated Edition): Michael Vlismas Elon Musk - Risking It All (Paperback, Updated Edition)
Michael Vlismas
R310 R248 Discovery Miles 2 480 Save R62 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

In 2022 Elon Musk - one of the richest and best-known people on earth - made headlines worldwide with his bid to buy Twitter, and he is often in the news for his entrepreneurial exploits and his controversial tweets. Who is this boundary-pushing billionaire with grand plans of inhabiting Mars, and what lies at the heart of his vision? Why is he so utterly unafraid of risk?

As an awkward Pretoria schoolboy who loved comics and science fiction, Musk's early years and singular family background were crucial in forming his stellar ambitions. Journalist and author Michael Vlismas, who attended the same high school as Musk, knows well the environment that shaped him and offers new insights into Musk's development, including his troubled relationship with his father.

Tracing his remarkable life, from his South African childhood to his move to Canada at 17 and then to the US - where Musk made millions out of PayPal and built Tesla and SpaceX into two of the world's most famous companies - this is the revealing new story of a man driven to preserve the optimism he sees in humanity and find a future for humans 'out there among the stars'.

Into Dark Water - A Police Memoir (Paperback): Jeremy Vearey Into Dark Water - A Police Memoir (Paperback)
Jeremy Vearey
R340 R292 Discovery Miles 2 920 Save R48 (14%) Ships in 4 - 8 working days

Major-General Jeremy Vearey, ex-MK cadre, is deputy provincial commissioner of the Western Cape SAPS. He starts his 'police memoir' with the old apartheid police and ex-freedom fighters meeting for the first time.

Action ranges from the secretive Operation Saladin to anti-gang policing with the 'skollie patrollie'. Underworld figures and gangsters loom large, as does the constant fear of death. Painting a vivid portrait of policing, politics and criminality in the Western Cape, this is also an intimate account of what it means to reach the highest ranks of policing, having been a revolutionary.

The ‘dark stream’ is the price that the author has paid for following his calling.

We all know South Africa has problems; we read about them in the newspapers, we see them on the streets and many people experience them in their daily lives. Fortunately, many of these problems can be solved using innovation and science. Innovation takes a look at inventions - developed in South Africa by South Africans - to address issues in the areas of healthcare, energy, environment and industry. Some of these inventions, such as a tea bag created to filter water for communities in rural areas, can save lives; others, such as a unique way to beneficiate titanium, could spell a new era of industry in the country.

The book is broken down into sections on environment, health, energy, industry and education, and in each of those parts are examples of South African innovations, from a satellite system to map fires to the concept of sterilising mosquitoes to stop the spread of malaria.

These have been developed by numerous organisations and institutions and showcase South Africa's excellence.

Emperor Of Rome - Ruling The Ancient Roman World (Hardcover): Mary Beard Emperor Of Rome - Ruling The Ancient Roman World (Hardcover)
Mary Beard
R645 R516 Discovery Miles 5 160 Save R129 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

A sweeping account of the social and political world of the Roman emperors by 'the world's most famous classicist' (Guardian).

Cruel control freaks, diligent workaholics or extravagant teenagers? What were the emperors of Rome really like?

In her international best-seller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now, she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE).

Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Beard asks bigger questions: What power did emperors actually have? Was the Roman palace really so bloodstained?

Emperor of Rome goes directly to the heart of Roman (and our own) fantasies about what it was to be Roman, offering an account of Roman history as it has never been presented before.

Carson - The Magnificent (Hardcover): Bill Zehme, Mike Thomas Carson - The Magnificent (Hardcover)
Bill Zehme, Mike Thomas
R754 R584 Discovery Miles 5 840 Save R170 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A much-anticipated biography—twenty years in the making—of the entertainer who redefined late-night television and reshaped American culture.

In 2002, Bill Zehme landed one of the most coveted assignments for a magazine writer: an interview with Johnny Carson—the only one he’d granted since retiring from hosting The Tonight Show a decade earlier. Zehme was tapped for the Esquire feature story thanks to his years of legendary celebrity profiles, and the resulting piece portrayed Carson as more human being than showbiz legend. Shortly after Carson’s death in 2005 and urged on by many of those closest to Carson, Zehme signed a contract to do an expansive biography. He toiled on the book for nearly a decade—interviewing dozens of Carson’s colleagues and friends and filling up a storage locker with his voluminous research—before a cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatments halted his progress. When he died in 2023 his obituaries mentioned the Carson book, with New York Times comedy critic Jason Zinoman calling it “one of the great unfinished biographies.”

Yet the hundreds of pages Zehme managed to complete are astounding both for the caliber of their writing and how they illuminate one of the most inscrutable figures in entertainment history: A man who brought so much joy and laughter to so many millions but was himself exceedingly shy and private. Zehme traces Carson’s rise from a magic-obsessed Nebraska boy to a Navy ensign in World War II to a burgeoning radio and TV personality to, eventually, host of The Tonight Show—which he transformed, along with the entirety of American popular culture, over the next three decades. Without Carson, there would be no late-night television as we know it. On a much more intimate level, Zehme also captures the turmoil and anguish that accompanied the success: four marriages, troubles with alcohol, and the devastating loss of a child.

In one passage, Zehme notes that when asked by an interviewer in the mid-80s for the secret to his success, Carson replied simply, “Be yourself and tell the truth.” Completed with help from journalist and Zehme’s former research assistant Mike Thomas, Carson the Magnificent offers just that: an honest assessment of who Johnny Carson really was.

Vandag is Reynardt Hugo ’n suksesvolle jong man wat ’n groot impak maak.

Reynardt se verhaal is boeiend. Dit bevat al die elemente van tragedie, intrige, neerlaag en oorwinning, maar ook die heel belangrikste bestanddeel: die krag van die evangelie van Jesus Christus.

Khamr: The Makings Of A Waterslams is a true story that maps the author’s experience of living with an alcoholic father and the direct conflict of having to perform a Muslim life that taught him that nearly everything he called home was forbidden.

A detailed account from his childhood to early adulthood, Jamil F. Khan lays bare the experience of living in a so-called middle-class Coloured home in a neighbourhood called Bernadino Heights in Kraaifontein, a suburb to the north of Cape Town. His memories are overwhelmed by the constant discord that was created by the chaos and dysfunction of his alcoholic home and a co-dependent relationship with his mother, while trying to manage the daily routine of his parents keeping up appearances and him maintaining scholastic excellence.

Khan’s memories are clear and detailed, which in turn is complemented by his scholarly thinking and analysis of those memories. He interrogates the intersections of Islam, Colouredness and the hypocrisy of respectability as well as the effect perceived class status has on these social realities in simple yet incisive language, giving the reader more than just a memoir of pain and suffering.

Khan says about his debut book: "This is not a story for the romanticisation of pain and perseverance, although it tells of overcoming many difficulties. It is a critique of secret violence in faith communities and families, and the hypocrisy that has damaged so many people still looking for a place and way to voice their trauma. This is a critique of the value placed on ritual and culture at the expense of human life and well-being, and the far-reaching consequences of systems of oppression dressed up as tradition."

Achieve better marks in Afrikaans (Grade 7-12)

Afrikaans+ is a learner-friendly guidebook which caters for additional language learners who want to achieve better marks in Afrikaans. This practical guide contains explanations in English and is filled to the brim with examples. It explains tests and exams used for both the DBE and IEB and was written by a panel of educational experts who understand the needs of additional language learners.

This book is completely up to date. The Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) has just been re-issued, blindsiding many a teacher with the changes in Afrikaans grammar rules. While the AWS is seen as the touchstone for Afrikaans language practitioners, it could be a daunting book to use in the classroom. Afrikaans+ was written with the most recent changes to the AWS in mind, and presents these grammar rules in a clear, practical manner.

Every chapter in the book also offers free online support - exercises, answers and examples - which will be kept up to date by the panel.

The book contains six sections:

1. Comprehension - Begrip: This explains how you should approach a comprehension test, how to look for the answers, and provides tips on how to understand the questions. It also explains how to make summaries. Visual texts, such as cartoons, graphs and maps, are also explained.

2. Grammar - Taal: This is a step-by-step guide to understanding the “how” and the “why” of Afrikaans grammar. You will be guided with English explanations and Afrikaans examples on things like word order, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, time, numbers, plural and diminutive forms, the negative, active and passive voice, pronouns, participles and abbreviations. There are sections offering basic knowledge to help the struggling learner through the exam. But there are also more advanced sections for the learner who wants to get an A and for the teacher who wants to become familiar with all the changes in the AWS.

3. Literature - Letterkunde: Everything you need to know about prose, drama, short stories and poetry. What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile? Who is the protagonist and who the antagonist? We use simple explanations and good examples of all these and other literature terms.

4. Oral - Mondeling: The book contains practical pointers on how to prepare for different kinds of oral, such as interviews, prepared speeches, introducing and thanking a speaker, roleplay, how to make a vlog and how to discuss the booklist you have to read for grade 12. Examples of all these are given, and more are provided online.

5. Vocabulary - Woordeskat: You will always need vocabulary for essays and orals. With the most recent vocabulary on food, technology, life after school, sport and lots more, you will be well prepared.

6. Written work - Skryfwerk: This section starts with a step-by-step approach to writing: how to choose a topic, how to do your planning, what not to use in an essay and how to end your story. The examples of all the different types of written work (essays, long and short transactional writing) and tips on each, will help you to master each one. Online you will be able to read through more examples.

Maggie is a remarkable firsthand account of a teenage girl’s experiences during the AngloBoer War.

Margaretha (Maggie) Jooste was only 13 years old when the AngloBoer War broke out and her life was irrevocably changed. After months of house arrest in their Heidelberg (Transvaal) home, she, her mother and younger siblings were sent away to concentration camps in Natal. There they experienced hunger, deprivation and loss, but also surprising acts of kindness from British guards.

This very personal account is a story of hardships, but also one of humanity and friendships over enemy lines. A golden threat is the close bond between the Jooste family and the Englishspeaking Russells who lived as neighbours and friends before the war broke out. While the British soldiers and Boer commandos fought the war, the Russells secretly provided food to the Joostes to help them survive, and supported them after the war.

A poignant and deeply moving, but also heartbreaking, true story.

What was supposed to be a short business trip to Equatorial Guinea turned into a journey to the depths of hell.

Black Beach, located on Bioko island off the mainland of Equatorial Guinea, is one of the world’s most feared prisons, notorious for its brutality and inhumane conditions.

In 2013, South African businessman Daniel Janse van Rensburg set off to the West African country to finalise a legitimate airline contract with a local politician. Within days, Daniel was arrested by the local Rapid Intervention Force and detained without trial in the island’s infamous ‘Guantanamo’ cells, and was later taken to Black Beach. This is his remarkable story of survival over nearly two years, made possible by his unwavering faith and the humanity of a few fellow inmates.

In this thrilling first-person narrative, Daniel relives his ordeal, describing the harrowing conditions in the prison, his extraordinary experiences there, and his ceaseless hope to return to South Africa and be reunited with his family. A story of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity, Black Beach demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the toll injustice takes on ordinary people who fall foul of the powerful and corrupt.

Award-winning actor, director, producer, and activist Kerry Washington shares the deeply moving journey of her life so far, and the bravely intimate story of discovering her truth.

While on a drive in Los Angeles, on a seemingly average afternoon, Kerry Washington received a text message that would send her on a life-changing journey of self-discovery. In an instant, her very identity was torn apart, with everything she thought she knew about herself thrown into question.

In Thicker Than Water, Washington gives readers an intimate view into both her public and private worlds - as an artist, an advocate, an entrepreneur, a mother, a daughter, a wife, a Black woman. Chronicling her upbringing and life's journey thus far, she reveals how she faced a series of challenges and setbacks, effectively hid childhood traumas, met extraordinary mentors, managed to grow her career and crossed the threshold into stardom and political advocacy, ultimately discovering her truest self and with it a deeper sense of belonging.

Throughout this profoundly moving and beautifully written memoir, Washington attempts to answer the questions so many have struggled with: Who am I? What is my truest and most authentic self? How do I find a deeper sense of connection and belonging? With grace and honesty, Washington inspires readers to search for - and find - themselves.

On one hand, Hunting The Dragon tells the story of the failure after failure of a brilliant but often frustrated South African entrepreneur who finally went on to hit the big time with a billion-rand company. But it is more than a memoir.

For three decades, Iain Buchan battled his competitors, his bosses, his partners and his own worst instincts as he launched one exciting but ultimately doomed business venture after another. Life was a roller coaster. The highs were addictive, the lows suicidal. With each failure, Iain’s confidence took a knock, until the doubts consumed him. Why couldn’t he crack it? Why was he constantly fighting the world? What was the fear that drove him, though never to sustainable success?

It was only after a profound personal transformation in his mid-40s that Iain could begin to work his way towards real and long-lasting success, in business and in life. Together with his three children and inspirational team, Iain has put personal growth at the front and centre of their business, The Unlimited. In doing so, they have developed a leadership system that drives one of the most successful and inspiring sales forces in the country, an empowered collection of young South Africans whose sales ability generates previously unimaginable revenues.

Hunting The Dragon isn’t just a memoir or business book. It is a truly eye-opening account of what it means to struggle and transform to achieve real success in life through leadership.

With his quick turn of phrase, his baritone voice and his direct, no-nonsense approach, he has earned a loyal following on radio and television over the past two decades. In Gqimm Shelele, his signature sign-off phrase, Marawa shares his broadcasting journey from hosting World Cups and interviewing presidents to his multiple firings, controversial suspensions and what he believes are the political forces behind attempts to end his career. He confronts the cabal that has repeatedly driven him off air, the tabloid reports about his personal life and his multiple near-death experiences and health scares.

With his trademark passion, Marawa addresses issues of transformation, sports administration, mentorship, political leadership and why Bafana Bafana keeps failing to win. He also shares his insights on what has made him a successful and popular radio and television broadcaster, giving a much-anticipated, behind-the-scenes look at his career.
