The political philosopher and writer William Godwin (1756-1836),
who was also the husband of writer Mary Wollstonecraft and father
of Mary Shelley, was known for his philosophical works and novels.
In this work, originally published in 1834, Godwin turns to the
issue of the supernatural, and to some of the famous - and
sometimes unexpected - people associated with it. He begins by
defining some magic practices, such as divination, astrology, and
necromancy, giving examples of the latter from the Bible. The
remainder of the work consists of brief sketches of people and
places involved in the occult world, beginning in the Ancient
Middle East and Greece, surveying the Christian era in Europe, and
ending with the New England witch trials. In a remarkable work of
synthesis, he discusses apparently supernatural episodes in the
lives of many historical figures, from Socrates and Virgil to Joan
of Arc and James I.

three years from 1893 to 1896 when the Golden Dawn was at its peak.
In every volume the intellectual integrity of the authors is
evident, as is an eagerness to bring academic respectability to
subjects derided by their contemporaries. This edition was Edited

Art," by Sapere Aude; Preface to the "Hermetic Art," Parts II &

The Pin Is Mightier Than the Sword
"Denise Alvarado is a true hoodoo mamba home girl who burned
hi-octane conjure in New Orleans where she grew up, and on visits
to relatives in the Mississippi bayous, where she was formally
introduced to the Voodoo/hoodoo path. Called by the spirits and
taught conjuration by family members, she was working the goofer
from five years old. That's some serious heat. Denise is no
pretender. She's for real. She fixes the formulas, raises the
spirits, calculates the mathematics, and works wonders at the old
dirt track crossroads." -Doktor Snake, author of "Doktor Snake's
Voodoo Spellbook"
When it comes to Voodoo, few things are more iconic than the
Voodoo doll. Known also as conjure dolls, doll babies, dollies,
baby dolls, poppets, fetich, fetish, and effigies, they are
servants of fast-acting, long-lasting magic. If you are seeking a
new job or new friends, need to find your one true love or keep
your lover at home, wish to be rid of your enemies or protect
yourself from thievery, in these pages you will find the doll and
the spell to do just that and more.
Drawing not only on New Orleans Voodoo and hoodoo traditions,
Alvarado also presents doll spellwork from ancient Greece, Egypt,
Malaysia, Japan, Africa, and the European grimoires of old magic.
You'll learn how to make, use, and properly dispose of your Voodoo
doll.
Be warned: this is some of the most effective magic that exists
so be ready to reap what you are about to sow, or in this case,

A long-treasured but forgotten classic of folk healing, with an introduction and commentary by the author of Backwoods Witchcraft and Doctoring the Devil.
Ossman & Steel’s Guide to Health or Household Instructor (its original title) is a collection of spells, remedies, and charms. The book draws from the old Pennsylvania Dutch and German powwow healing practices that in turn helped shape Appalachian folk healing, conjure, rootwork, and many folk healing traditions in America. Jake Richards, author of Backwoods Witchcraft and Doctoring the Devil, puts these remedies in context, with practical advice for modern-day “backwoods” healers interested to use them today.
The first part contains spells and charms for healing wounds, styes, broken bones, maladies, and illnesses of all sorts. The second part includes other folk remedies using ingredients based on sympathetic reasoning, including sulfuric acid, gunpowder, or other substances for swelling, toothache, headache, and so on. These remedies are presented here for historic interest, to help better understand how folk medicine evolved in America.
It is Jake Richard’s hope that reintroducing this work will reestablish its position as a useful household helper in the library of every witch or country healer.

Regency England was a pivotal time, remembered for its political
uncertainty with a changing monarchy, the Napoleonic Wars, and a
population explosion in London. In Susanna Clarke's fantasy novel
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, the era is also witness to the
unexpected return of magic. Locating the consequences of this
eruption of magical unreason within the context of England's
imperial history, this study examines Merlin and his legacy, the
roles of magicians throughout history, the mythology of
disenchantment, the racism at work in the character of Stephen
Black, the meaning behind the fantasy of magic's return, and the
Englishness of English magic itself. Looking at the larger
historical context of magic and its links to colonialism, this
inaugural treatment offers both a fuller understanding of the
ethical visions underlying Clarke's groundbreaking novel of madness
intertwined with magic, while challenging readers to rethink
connections among national identity, rationality, and power.
Constructing a functional system of magic that helps readers
suspend disbelief is a crucial part of worldbuilding in the fantasy
genres. Yet creating a believable, compelling and original
fictional universe can be daunting. To help inspire writers, this
guide provides an overview of how magic has been understood in
history and used in myth, legend and modern fiction. Different
forms of magic are explored and a broad range of stories-from
Nordic myths to modern novels-are described and referenced.
Discussion explores how magic as a concept shapes, and is shaped
by, fictional worlds and societies.

With more than forty spells, plus detailed diagrams and conjuring charts -- all reproduced here following the method of the original French manuscript.
