Stochastic Processes In Magnetic Resonance (Hardcover): Dan Gamliel, Haim Levanon Stochastic Processes In Magnetic Resonance (Hardcover)
Dan Gamliel, Haim Levanon
R2,682 Discovery Miles 26 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book describes methods for calculating magnetic resonance spectra which are observed in the presence of random processes. The emphasis is on the stochastic Liouville equation (SLE), developed mainly by Kubo and applied to magnetic resonance mostly by J H Freed and his co-workers. Following an introduction to the use of density matrices in magnetic resonance, a unified treatment of Bloch-Redfield relaxation theory and chemical exchange theory is presented. The SLE formalism is then developed and compared to the other relaxation theories. Methods for solving the SLE are explained in detail, and its application to a variety of problems in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is studied. In addition, experimental aspects relevant to the applications are discussed. Mathematical background material is given in appendices.

Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy - also sometimes termed Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy - has manifold potential uses in biochemistry and medicine. The paramount importance of EPR spectroscopy applied to biological tissues and fluids is that it identifies the changes in redox processes that contribute to disease. EPR spectroscopy has come a long way from its original use to detect malignant tumors. For example, the development and later refinement of methods of low-temperature registration of biological tissues widened the scope of EPR spectroscopy. Innovations made possible by the introduction of spin labels, probes, and traps made EPR spectroscopy ever more applicable to biochemistry and medicine, to the point where in vivo studies are being carefully considered. This comprehensive book discusses spectra of many tissues and bodily fluids, and the quantitative nature of paramagnetic centers in both normal individuals and patients suffering from a variety of diseases. Special attention is given to the EPR examination of bio-molecules, such as enzymes, polypeptides, vitamins, lipids, hydrocarbons, etc., which play an essential role in human activity. This book will be of great interest to physicians specializing in many different areas. Similarly, biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, and chemists will find this book very useful. It has also been written so that it may be used as a textbook at graduate level.

NMR in Supramolecular Chemistry (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): M. Pons NMR in Supramolecular Chemistry (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
M. Pons
R5,783 Discovery Miles 57 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

NMR is better suited than any other experimental technique for the characterization of supramolecular systems in solution. The presentations included here can be broadly divided into three classes. The first class illustrates the state of the art in the design of supramolecular systems and includes examples of different classes of supramolecular complexes: catenanes, rotaxanes, hydrogen-bonded rosettes, tubes, capsules, dendrimers, and metal-containing hosts. The second class comprises contributions to NMR methods that can be applied to address the main structural problems that arise in supramolecular chemistry. The third class includes biological supramolecular systems studied by state-of-the-art NMR techniques.

NMR Spectroscopy and its Application to Biomedical Research (Hardcover): S.K. Sarkar NMR Spectroscopy and its Application to Biomedical Research (Hardcover)
S.K. Sarkar
R10,201 Discovery Miles 102 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

NMR has become the most diverse spectroscopic tool available to date in biomedical research. It is now routinely used to study biomolecular structure and dynamics particularly as a result of recent developments of a cascade of highly sophisticated multidimensional NMR pulse sequences, and of advances in genetic engineering to produce biomolecules, uniformly or selectively enriched with 13C, 15N and 2H.

Features of this book:

- Provides an up-to-date treatment of NMR techniques and their application to problems of biomedical interest

- Most refined multidimensional pulse sequences including the basic aspects are covered by leading NMR spectroscopists.

The book will be useful to NMR spectroscopists, biochemists, and to molecular biologists interested in the use of NMR techniques for solving biological problems.

Preceptors in Chemistry (Hardcover): Gary Patterson Preceptors in Chemistry (Hardcover)
Gary Patterson
R4,276 Discovery Miles 42 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the last 500 years, the worldwide community of chemistry has produced individuals who attempted to synthesize a coherent view of chemistry that could be taught to actual students. This book attempts to define the characteristics of good chemical preceptors. Even chemical geniuses can become so focused on their own work that they are not understood by the bulk of their contemporaries and cannot contribute to the synoptic view of chemistry needed for effective teaching. It is hoped that the insights presented in this work will be of benefit to all current preceptors in chemistry.
