Organic Chemistry (Paperback, 9th edition): Leroy G Wade, Jan W Simek Organic Chemistry (Paperback, 9th edition)
Leroy G Wade, Jan W Simek 2
R1,732 Discovery Miles 17 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Student-Centered Approach to Learning and Studying Organic Chemistry.

Wade & Simek’s Ninth Edition of Organic Chemistry presents key principles of organic chemistry in the context of fundamental reasoning and problem solving. Authored to complement how students use a textbook today, new Problem Solving Strategies, Partially Solved Problems, Visual Reaction Guides and Reaction Starbursts encourage students to use the text before class as a primary introduction to organic chemistry as well as a comprehensive study tool for working problems and/or preparing for exams. With unparalleled and highly refined pedagogy, this Ninth edition gives students a contemporary overview of organic principles and the tools for organizing and understanding reaction mechanisms and synthetic organic chemistry.

This title is a Pearson Global Edition. The Editorial team at Pearson has worked closely with educators around the world to include content which is especially relevant to students outside the United States.

  • Organic Chemistry offers the following features to facilitate learning:
  • Highly refined presentation and features present key principles of organic chemistry in the context of fundamental reasoning and problem solving.
  • New! Expanded coverage of Acid/Base Chemistry in Chapter 2 and separation of the material on Substitution and Elimination into two distinct chapters allow students to build upon their existing knowledge and move through their first mechanisms with greater clarity and with more opportunities to test and apply their understanding without getting overwhelmed.
  • NEW! Problem Solving Strategies have been added and explicitly highlighted in each chapter, including new strategies for resonance, acid-base equilibria, and multistep synthesis.
  • NEW! Green chemistry is emphasized with presentation of less-toxic, environmentally friendly reagents in many situations, such as oxidation of alcohols with bleach rather than with chromium reagents.
  • NEW! Chapter Openers focus on applications discussed in the chapter, with introductions and images for a more enticing, contemporary presentation.
  • NEW! Reaction Starbursts appear before the end of chapter material of every ‘reaction-based chapter’ to help students better understand and mentally organize reactive similarities and distinctions.
  • NEW! Visual Guides to Organic Reactions place the reactions covered in major chapters within the overall context of the reactions covered in the course.
  • NEW! Over 100 new problems include more synthesis problems and problems based on recent literature.
  • 20 Key Mechanism boxes highlight the fundamental mechanistic principles that recur throughout the course and are the basis for some of the longer, more complex mechanisms. Each describes the steps of the reaction in detail with a specific example to reinforce the mechanism and a concluding problem to help students absorb these essential reactions.
  • Over 50 Mechanism boxes help students understand how specific reactions occur by zooming in on each individual step in detail.
  • UPDATED! Art has been revised throughout to provide consistency and clarity in the text, giving students access to detailed representations of molecular and orbital art.

Essential Problem Solving Skills help students navigate problems and key topics in the text.

The exceptional quality of previous editions has been built upon to make this new edition of Atkins' Physical Chemistry even more closely suited to the needs of both lecturers and students. Re-organised into discrete Topics, the text is more flexible to teach from and more readable for students. Now in its eleventh edition, the text has been enhanced with additional learning features and maths support to demonstrate the absolute centrality of mathematics to physical chemistry. Increasing the digestibility of the text in this new approach, the reader is brought to a question, then the maths is used to show how it can be answered and progress made. The expanded and redistributed maths support also includes a greatly increased number of 'Chemist's toolkits' which provide students with succinct reminders of mathematical concepts and techniques right where they need them. Checklists of key concepts at the end of each Topic add to the extensive learning support provided throughout the book, to reinforce the main take-home messages in each section. The coupling of the broad coverage of the subject with a structure and use of pedagogy that is even more innovative will ensure Atkins' Physical Chemistry remains the textbook of choice for studying physical chemistry. Online resources Atkins' Physical Chemistry is accompanied by a range of online resources: For registered adopters of the book: * Figures and tables from the book, in ready to download format * Tables of key equations * Instructor's Solutions Manual For students: * Web links to a range of additional physical chemistry resources on the internet * Group theory tables, available for downloading * Molecular modelling problems * Impact sections show the application of physical chemistry in a diverse range of modern contexts * 'Further Information' sections which consist of longer derivations

Chemistry, Seventh Edition provides the necessary practice, support, concept mastery and individualized instruction that ensure success in the General Chemistry course.

The unique "chemical tools" approach employed in this book provides a way of thinking that helps readers develop the ability to analyze and solve both mathematical and conceptual problems.

New to This Edition:

  • Completely revised end-of-chapter problem sections
  • Chapter Openers include more real-world relevance/connections
  • New Chapter 0 provides optional “refresher” information for students about the history of chemistry: coverage of the elements, atomic structure, and theory.
  • New Analyzing & Solving Multi-Concept problems and examples have been added throughout the text. These problem and examples are also now briefer and more concise.
  • New Learning Objectives have been added to provide an outline at the beginning of each chapter.
  • New End-of-Chapter Summaries review key chapter concepts, also organized by Learning Objectives.

The Wiley Advantage

  • WileyPLUS is a research-based online environment for effective teaching and learning. WileyPLUS is packed with interactive study tools and resources–including the complete online textbook–to give your students more value for their money.
  • WileyPLUS is now equipped with an adaptive learning module called ORION. Based on cognitive science, WileyPLUS with ORION, provides students with a personal, adaptive learning experience so they can build their proficiency on topics and use their study time most effectively. WileyPLUS with ORION helps students learn by learning about them.
  • Analyzing and Solving Multi-Concept Problems
  • Four-step problem solving framework: “Analysis”, “Solution”, “Assembling the Tools”, and “Is the Answer Reasonable?”
  • Tools for Problem Solving – basic skills are presented as tools (marked by icons) that can be combined in a variety of ways to solve complex problems
  • End of chapter problems feature more visuals/molecular structures and provide a wide range of difficulty.

R1,354 Discovery Miles 13 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Essential Mathematics for Chemists is ideally suited for students who have a limited mathematical background and who wish to build their confidence in the use of mathematics that is relevant to their chemistry studies. John Gormally has many years' experience of teaching mathematics to chemistry students and has set out specifically to address common difficulties in understanding the subject. Assuming little knowledge of mathematics, this book first introduces basic skills in handling numbers before covering key topics relevant to chemistry including functions, elementary algebraic manipulation, differential and integral calculus and matrix algebra. The order of the chapters reflects the way in which chemistry courses are often structured and relates to both lecture and laboratory courses. Self-test questions are provided within the text and answers are given at the end of each chapter. Together with the numerous worked examples and sets of graded problems provided, these will help students to acquire relevant skills and gain confidence.
