Asphalt Mixture Specification and Testing (Hardcover): Cliff Nicholls Asphalt Mixture Specification and Testing (Hardcover)
Cliff Nicholls
R4,726 Discovery Miles 47 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This guide reviews the way asphalt mixture can be specified, with particular emphasis on the test methods used to measure performance. The advantages and limitations of the tests are described for measuring the desired property, and engineers can specify a test according to the material's use. The book starts with a resume of specifications and their relative advantages and disadvantages for different situations. Then different properties are discussed in terms of: their specification; the test methods that can be used (primarily the EN 12697 suite of European methods, of which the author has been responsible for drafting); the extent to which the results predict performance; the levels that can be achieved with different asphalt mixes and types; what levels, if any, should be specified in various situations and pavement layers; and which other properties are adversely affected by enhanced performance. The final section covers various aspects of sustainability, with a strong emphasis on durability. Better understanding should enable clients and consultants who specify pavements to produce durable asphalt pavements more economically, and also help asphalt producers and students trying to understand the black art of asphalt.

R1,177 R1,079 Discovery Miles 10 790 Save R98 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The scramble for natural resources is not a new phenomenon. Every state, either developed or developing, is always found busy 'managing' resources for its sustenance and growth. Minerals (also called materials) is one crucial natural resource which plays a significant part in the development of both civilian and military industrial complexes of nation-states. There are a few minerals which are categorized as 'strategic' because of their importance for the industries and owing to natural and man-made difficulties in their procurement. This work debates the issues of strategic materials and their importance for nation-states. There has been an attempt here to contextualize the importance of strategic materials from a national security perspective. This study presents a macro view with regard to India's strategic minerals architecture and undertakes analysis to understand current and futuristic challenges and opportunities in this sector, and offers a few recommendations based on the assessment undertaken. Issues related to Rare Earth and New Materials are also discussed.

The Pit Sinkers of Northumberland and Durham (Paperback, New): Peter Ford Mason The Pit Sinkers of Northumberland and Durham (Paperback, New)
Peter Ford Mason
R416 R391 Discovery Miles 3 910 Save R25 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shaft sinking for the extraction of minerals has taken place for centuries, and for much of this time, coal mining was carried out in the North East of England. Various methods of pit sinking developed from the use of shallow bell pits to the excavation of deep shafts, in order to access rich seams of coal and other minerals for sale in rapidly urbanising areas such as London. In the close mining communities of Northumberland and Durham, those who dug the initial shafts, the sinkers themselves, were regarded as the mining elite. This book not only tells the story of mining itself, through upheaval and technological developments, but also focuses on the lives of miners and their families above ground in the emerging pit towns adn villages; places where religion adn miners' galas were an integral part of life. Peter Ford Mason, descended from three generations of County Durham miners, has written a fascinating investigation onto miming society, which makes a compelling read for anyone interested in the social history of the North East or the mining industry as a whole.

COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level. Part of COST was COST Action C26 Urban Habitat Constructions Under Catastrophic Events, which started in 2006 and held its final conference in Naples, Italy, on 16-18 September 2010. The main objective of COST Action C26 was to increase the knowledge of the behaviour of constructions in urban habitat under catastrophic events (earthquakes, fire, wind, impact, explosions etc.), in order to predict their response when both the applied loading and the inherent structural resistance are combined in such a way that the safety level reaches unacceptable values, leading in some cases to a premature collapse.

Urban Habitat Constructions Under Catastrophic Events collects 151 papers from internationally recognized outstanding experts from 46 countries that were presented at the final conference: 82 contributions from COST experts and 69 from external authors. They are subdivided into 5 sections, which exactly correspond to the 5 Chapters of the Final Report of the COST Action C26 activity:

(I) Characterization of catastrophic actions on constructions;

(II) Analysis of behaviour of constructions under catastrophic events;

(III) Evaluation of vulnerability of constructions;

(IV) Protecting, strengthening and repairing;

(V) Strategy and guidelines for damage prevention.

Urban Habitat Constructions Under Catastrophic Events will be of interest to academics and engineers in civil and structural engineering, especially those involved in fire resistance, earthquake resistance, impact and explosion resistance, and resistance to Infrequent Loading Conditions.

The Millstone Industry - A Summary of Research on Quarries and Producers in the United States, Europe and Elsewhere... The Millstone Industry - A Summary of Research on Quarries and Producers in the United States, Europe and Elsewhere (Paperback)
Charles D. Hockensmith, Donna Neary
R2,298 Discovery Miles 22 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since prehistoric times, the process of cutting rock to make millstones has been one of the most important industries in the world. Different civilizations and cultures have produced their own styles of grinding stones, which have been used in mills to process wheat, corn, and other grains into the flour and meal that was necessary to feed a growing population. The earliest rotary millstones, known as querns, were turned by human power. Later in history, larger millstones were manufactured that required animal, water, or wind power to turn them. These larger millstones required less human effort and ground greater quantities of grain, but also required regular maintenance and replacement. As a result, millstone quarries increased greatly in number and size in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the largest quarry sites extending as far as nearly a half-mile square to about 12 square miles.The first part of this book compiles information on the millstone industry in the United States, which dates between the mid - 1600s and the mid - 1900s. Primarily based on archival research and brief accounts published in geological and historical volumes, it focuses on conglomerate, granite, flint, quartzite, gneiss, and sandstone quarries in different regions and states, along with a general overview of the rise and fall of the American millstone industry. The second part focuses on the millstone quarrying industry in Europe and other areas. Of the European millstone industry, the quarries of France, Germany, and Great Britain are most extensively documented, although the quarries of Albania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland are also addressed. The book includes 84 photographs, 16 tables, and a helpful glossary of specialized and technical terms.

Mass Destruction - The Men and Giant Mines That Wired America and Scarred the Planet (Hardcover): Timothy J. LeCain Mass Destruction - The Men and Giant Mines That Wired America and Scarred the Planet (Hardcover)
Timothy J. LeCain
R960 Discovery Miles 9 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"The place: " The steep mountains outside Salt Lake City. "The time: " The first decade of the twentieth century. "The man: " Daniel Jackling, a young metallurgical engineer. "The goal: " A bold new technology that could provide billions of pounds of cheap copper for a rapidly electrifying America. "The result: " Bingham's enormous "Glory Hole," the first large-scale open-pit copper mine, an enormous chasm in the earth and one of the largest humanmade artifacts on the planet. "Mass Destruction" is the compelling story of Jackling and the development of open-pit hard rock mining, its role in the wiring of an electrified America, as well its devastating environmental consequences.

Mass destruction mining soon spread around the nation and the globe, providing raw materials essential to the mass production and mass consumption that increasingly defined the emerging "American way of life." At the dawn of the last century, Jackling's open pit replaced immense but constricted underground mines that probed nearly a mile beneath the earth, to become the ultimate symbol of the modern faith that science and technology could overcome all natural limits. A new culture of mass destruction emerged that promised nearly infinite supplies not only of copper, but also of coal, timber, fish, and other natural resources.

"But, what were the consequences?" Timothy J. LeCain deftly analyzes how open-pit mining continues to affect the environment in its ongoing devastation of nature and commodification of the physical world. The nation's largest toxic Superfund site would be one effect, as well as other types of environmental dead zones around the globe. Yet today, as the world's population races toward American levels of resource consumption, truly viable alternatives to the technology of mass destruction have not yet emerged.

Death Underground - The Centralia and West Frankfort Mine Disasters (Paperback): Robert Hartley, David Kenney Death Underground - The Centralia and West Frankfort Mine Disasters (Paperback)
Robert Hartley, David Kenney
R780 Discovery Miles 7 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Death Underground: ""The Centralia and West Frankfort Mine Disasters" examines two of the most devastating coal mine disasters in United States history since 1928. In two southern Illinois towns only forty miles apart, explosions killed 111 men at the Centralia No. 5 mine in 1947 and 119 men at the New Orient No. 2 mine in West Frankfort in 1951. Robert E. Hartley and David Kenney explain the causes of the accidents, identify who was to blame, and detail the emotional impact the disasters had on the survivors, their families, and their communities.Politics at the highest level of Illinois government played a critical role in the conditions that led to the accidents. Hartley and Kenney address how safety was compromised when inspection reports were widely ignored by state mining officials and mine company supervisors. Highlighted is the role of Driscoll Scanlan, a state inspector at Centralia, who warned of an impending disaster but whose political enemies shifted the blame to him, ruining his career. Hartley and Kenney also detail the New Orient No. 2 mine explosion, the attempts at rescue, and the resulting political spin circulated by labor, management, and the state bureaucracy. They outline the investigation, the subsequent hearings, and the efforts in Congress to legislate greater mine safety. Hartley and Kenney include interviews with the survivors, a summary of the investigative records, and an analysis of the causes of both mine accidents. They place responsibility for the disasters on individual mine owners, labor unions, and state officials, providing new interpretations not previously presented in the literature. Augmented by twenty-nine illustrations, the volume alsocovers the history, culture, and ethnic pluralism of coal mining in Illinois and the United States. ""

Mineworkers in Zambia - Labour and Political Change in Post-Colonial Africa (Hardcover): Miles Larmer Mineworkers in Zambia - Labour and Political Change in Post-Colonial Africa (Hardcover)
Miles Larmer
R4,262 Discovery Miles 42 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The received view of Zambia's mineworkers is of a reactionary body unable and unwilling to shape progressive politics in post-colonial Zambia. Miles Larmer seeks to use a whole range of little-used sources to dispel this myth. Extensive interviews with mineworkers and their wives reveals a working-class consciousness and a whole host of social and economic expectations that shaped their attitude towards political change. "Mineworkers in Zambia" gives this misunderstood group a place in the movement for political reform which culminated in the transition to multiparty democracy in 1991, and in so doing draws important lessons for the wider social and political history of post-colonial Africa.

Mark G. Alexander, Hans-Dieter Beushausen, Frank Dehn, Pilate Moyo
R9,720 Discovery Miles 97 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The First International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting (ICCRRR 2005) was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 21-23 November 2005. The conference was a collaborative venture by researchers from the South African Research Programme in Concrete Materials (based at the Universities of Cape Town and The Witwatersrand) and The Construction Materials Section at Leipzig University in Germany. The conference has come at an opportune moment for concrete construction worldwide and sought to focus on an increasingly important aspect in modern infrastructure provision and retention: that of appropriately repairing, maintaining, rehabilitating, and if necessary retrofitting existing infrastructure with a view to extending its life and maximising its economic return. The conference Proceedings contain papers, presented at the conference, and classified into a total of 15 sub themes which can be grouped under the four main themes of (i) Concrete durability aspects, (ii) Condition assessment of concrete structures, (iii) Concrete repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting, and (iv) Performance monitoring and health assessment. The major interest in terms of submissions exists in the fields of concrete durability aspects in connection with material compositions, NDE/NDT and measurement techniques, repair methods and materials, and structural strengthening and retrofitting techniques. The large number of high-quality papers presented and the wide range of relevant topics covered confirm that these Proceedings will be a valued reference for many working in the important fields of concrete durability and repair and that they form a suitable base for discussion and provide suggestions for future development and research.

When Coal Was King - Ladysmith and the Coal-Mining Industry on Vancouver Island (Hardcover, illustrated edition): John Hinde When Coal Was King - Ladysmith and the Coal-Mining Industry on Vancouver Island (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
John Hinde
R806 Discovery Miles 8 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The town of Ladysmith was one of the most important coal-mining communities on Vancouver Island during the early twentieth century. The Ladysmith miners had a reputation for radicalism and militancy and engaged in bitter struggles for union recognition and economic justice, most notably the Great Strike of 1912-14. This strike, one of the longest and most violent labour disputes in Canadian history, marked a watershed in the history of the town and the coal industry.

L.J. Bullen
R406 R333 Discovery Miles 3 330 Save R73 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The interface of metalliferous mining with the China Clay Industry is addressed in some detail in the first chapter. It will be noticed that the decline of metal mining in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is marked by the movement of steam engines to the ever-expanding clay area centred on St Austell. The present-day clay production accounts for nearly 100% of freight traffic on the railways in the county. It also gives additional employment at ports such as Fowey and Par. In common with mining operations worldwide many jobs are created in the service and supplies industries of the area. The cameo of the Castle-an-Dinas Wolfram Mine has a special place as it contains a unique range of photographs of the premier Wolfram mine in the county. In East Cornwall there existed a number of exceptional mines and these have been dealt with as comprehensively as the limitation of space permit. There are many hitherto unpublished prints of some of the lesser mines which will be of much interest.

This latest book, the fifth in the Mining in Cornwall series between St Ives and Cubert. It includes a number of well-known mines such as Wheal Kitty, Polberro, East Wheal Rose and Treamble. The majority of photos are published for the first time. In particular the scenes which comprise the cameos of three of the mines are unique record. A great deal of mineral wealth was wrought from the lodes of this area. Porthtowan. St Agnes and Perranporth are part of one of the oldest mining districts in the Duchy. A number of references are made to engineering firms within Cornwall that manufactured machinery for the mines. These establishments owed their origin's to the indigenous mining industry and eventually exported all manner of equipment, and expertise, world-wide. The author has, once again, produced an eminently readable book which is thoroughly researched and enhanced by an informed commentary. Even those only moderately interested in the subject will be impressed by these images of a by-gone age.

The Bewitchment of Silver - The Social Economy of Mining in Nineteenth-Century Peru (Paperback): Jose R. Deustua The Bewitchment of Silver - The Social Economy of Mining in Nineteenth-Century Peru (Paperback)
Jose R. Deustua
R800 Discovery Miles 8 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mining was crucial for the development of nineteenth-century Peru. Silver mining in particular was a key not only to the export sector but also to the creation of an internal market and national development. The Bewitchment of Silver is an inquiry into the impact of that mineral on a national economy in a country at the periphery of nineteenth-century capitalism. Josh Deustua argues that developing countries, such as Peru, must be understood in terms of achieving domestic development as well as in their role in generating foreign exchange and in linking themselves to the world economy. Focusing on the different sectors of mining production in nineteenth-century Peru, the mines, mine owners and mine workers, the transportation networks and the use of muleteers, this study is equally concerned with market-building and domestic development in nineteenth-century Latin America.
