First Published in 1997. Born in Dresden Germany, in 1748 Franz Seydelmann was an active music composer. He is principally known for his operas and church music, however he also wrote twenty-three sonatas, including seven solo harpischord sonatas, a Capriccio with variations and the Six Sonatas for Two Persons at Keyboard.

Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger, is revealed to be the New Earl of Hareford and his newly-discovered aristocratic relations are horrified. Bringing him to Hareford Hall, they attempt to educate Bill into the ways of the gentry and seperate him from his cockney girlfriend. This "comical cockney comedy" features an abundance of well-known "toe -tapping" songs (including "Lambeth Walk", "The Sun Has Got His Hat On" and "Leaning On A Lamppost"). This version was rewritten by Stephen Fry and Mike Ockrent and first presented at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in 1985 with Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson.

Now in paperback! Hugely popular in the 19th century, and starting to regain popularity now, the literature for multiple pianos is relatively unknown. J.S. Bach began the history of keyboard music for three or more players around 1730; Mozart contributed to the literature. Other important composers_Czerny, Moscheles, Smetana, Glazunov, Rachmaninoff_continued the tradition for particular pianists and occasions. Louis Moreau Gottschalk used a large number of pianos and pianists for his popularly acclaimed 'monster concerts' in the Americas. By the early 20th century, a mass of transcriptions and arrangements had accumulated. Later in the century, such important 20th-century composers as Ives, Stravinsky, Antheil, Orff, Dallapiccola, Milhaud, and others composed original works for the medium. A fresh perspective on two well-known personalities, Schoenberg's Correspondence with Alma Mahler documents a modern music friendship beginning in fin-de-siecle Vienna and ending in 1950s Los Angeles. This volume is the first English-language edition of the complete extant correspondence in new English translations from the original German, many from new transcriptions of handwritten originals, and it is the first English-language book of Schoenberg's correspondence with a female associate. These often quite candid letters afford readers a fascinating glimpse into the personalities, ideologies, institutions, protocols, and aesthetics of early twentieth-century European music culture. Critics, conductors, composers, and visual artists are appraised, kindly or venomously; visual artists and writers also appear. Above all, Alma Mahler (1879-1964) and Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) emerge as intriguing, complex individuals who transcend their conventional representations as, respectively, a femme fatale and a musical radical. For Schoenberg, Alma was a sympathetic confidante, a comrade in their shared battle against musical conservatism, yet also a canny negotiator of Vienna's social circles, a skill that brought Schoenberg into contact with important patrons. Not only did he invite Alma to his premieres, lectures, and art exhibitions, but Schoenberg also sent her scores of his music and drafts of his writings. He revealed to her his plans for his innovative new music society, the Society for Private Music Performances, and his development of a new method of composition with twelve tones. The letters remind us of how crucial the social and personal dimensions of music culture were to the early twentieth-century composers and musicians. Gender, ethnicity, and social class conditioned their opportunities in music--and in life--and their shared experience of fleeing fascism to a new country with a different culture and language resonates with our own epoch.

With newly written texts by Charles Bennett, each of the three movements focuses in on Ophelia from Hamlet and Caliban and Miranda from The Tempest. In the funky opener, 'River Bride', the upper voices take the part of Ophelia, while the tenors and basses play a lover figure. Caliban's song, 'Ariel taught me how to play', is a reflective ballad in which the slave tells Miranda, who has escaped his advances, about the spirit helper Ariel teaching him to play the saxophone. The final movement, 'All good things come to an end', is a sassy yet tender number, where Miranda bids farewell to her beloved husband Ferdinand, declaring: 'I've gone back to the island to remember who I am'. The saxophone, bass, piano, and drum kit parts may be played as written or serve as a guide.
