The classic three volumes of Hebridean Folksongs, reissued
simultaneously for the first time since their original publication
(1969, 1977, 1981), contain 135 songs connected with the waulking
of homespun tweed cloth in the Hebridean isles. Volume 1 is based
on waulking songs collected by Donald MacCormick in South Uist in
1893. Volumes 2 and 3 are based on John Lorne Campbell's recordings
of songs made between 1938 and 1965 in Barra, South Uist, Eriskay
and Benbecula. The translations for all the songs in Volumes 2 and
3 and many of those in Volume 1 are by John Lorne Campbell, who
also wrote detailed notes discussing the songs. Multiple versions
of the same song are compared with each other and with versions
drawn from unpublished manuscript sources. Francis Collinson's
meticulous musical transcriptions of the songs, and musicological
analyses, are invaluable. The songs are from the repertoires of
some well-known singers of their generation, including Miss Annie
Johnson, her brother Calum and Miss Mary Morrison, all of Barra,
Mrs Neil Campbell of South Uist, and Miss Nan MacKinnon of
Vatersay.
for SSA or SSS and organ or strings Originally published in a
version for mixed voices, this much-loved Rutter carol has been

Musicians, conductors, students, and researchers can now have a
list of conductor-related holdings and where to find them right at
their fingertips. The Directory of Conductors' Archives in American
Institutions lists the components and the locations of papers owned
and collected by conductors in the United States. Papers found from
many places across America are brought together and listed in this
single volume. Collections from historical societies, orchestra
archives, American libraries, and private collections are all
included to help the researcher or music lover locate materials
that are difficult to find in standard sources. Author Henry Bloch
has carefully compiled the entries in the book, listing all aspects
of the collections, including full scores and parts;
correspondence, scrapbooks, and business papers; still and moving
visual images; and sound recordings. Separated in to two parts,
Part I lists conductors alphabetically, citing all the details of
their collections, while Part II is organized alphabetically by
state and institution. Some entries include a notes section, which
lists additional materials or an archive's accessibility to
researchers. All pertinent location and contact information,
including curators, is also included. Cultural institutions and
individuals alike will greatly benefit from this invaluable
reference tool.
In this engaging work Vaughan Williams takes advantage of the
expressive possibilities of the cello, ranging from wistful and
melancholic to lively and jovial. It was composed in 1929 and
premiered the following year by its dedicatee, the legendary
Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. The five folk songs on which the work
is founded are 'Salisbury Plain', 'The Long Whip', 'Low down in the
broom', 'Bristol Town', and 'I've been to France'.
American director Robert Altman (1925-2006) first came to national
attention with the surprise blockbuster M*A*S*H (1970), and he
directed more than thirty feature films in the subsequent decades.
Critics and scholars have noted that music is central to Altman's
films, and in addition to his feature films, Altman worked in
theater, opera, and the emerging field of cable television. His
treatment of sound is a hallmark of his films, alongside
overlapping dialogue, improvisation, and large ensemble casts.
Several of his best-known films integrate musical performances into
the central plot, including Nashville (1975), Popeye (1980), Short
Cuts (1993), Kansas City (1996), The Company (2003) and A Prairie
Home Companion (2006), his final film. Even such non-musicals as
McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) have been described as, in fellow
director and protege Paul Thomas Anderson's evocative phrase, as
"musicals without people singing." Robert Altman's Soundtracks
considers Altman's celebrated, innovative uses of music and sound
in several of his most acclaimed and lesser-known works. In so
doing, these case studies serve as a window not only into Altman's
considerable and varied output, but also the changing film industry
over nearly four decades, from the heyday of the New Hollywood in
the late 1960s through the "Indiewood" boom of the 1990s and its
bust in the early 2000s. As its frame, the book will consider the
continuing attractions of auteurism inside and outside of scholarly
discourse, by considering Altman's career in terms of the
director's own self-promotion as a visionary and artist; the film
industry's promotion of Altman the auteur; the emphasis on Altman's
individual style, including his use of music, by the director,
critics, scholars, and within the industry; and the processes,
tensions, and boundaries of collaboration.
This study score has been off-printed from OUP's conductor's score
(available on hire), edited by David Lloyd Jones. Based on
Mussorgsky's [Musorgsky's] original autograph from 1867 rather than
the famous arrangement by Rimsky-Korsakov, it combines the
scholarship of the conductor's edition with the practical benefits
of a study score format. This edition takes account of practical
performing considerations, where necessary, and includes an
introduction by the editor. Orchestral material is available on
hire/rental.

Passion Music continues the fusion of jazz and choral music so
successfully blended in Will Todd's Mass in Blue. The structure
highlights different points in the Passion story, beginning with a
new setting of 'Greater love has no man' and including an evocative
Stabat Mater, a movement focusing on the seven last words of
Christ, and a setting of 'Were you there when they crucified my
Lord?'. While some sections are reflective, Todd also makes full
use of his understanding of energetic jazz and gospel. The vocal
soloist is given plenty of expressive freedom, singing both with
the choir and independently to achieve the characteristic jazz-soul
style. The seven-piece jazz accompaniment, which is presented in
the vocal score as a piano reduction for rehearsal only, completes
the ensemble. The vocal score is available on sale and hire. A
complete backing track and individual rehearsal tracks for the
vocal parts are also available to download.

originals (Falling Leaves, Havana Goodtime, Samurai Sword, Tudor
Dance) and established guitar repertoire by Sor and Carulli.

Understanding Game Scoring explores the unique collaboration
between gameplay and composition that defines musical scoring for
video games. Using an array of case studies reaching back into the
canon of classic video games, this book illuminates the musical
flexibility, user interactivity and sound programming that make
game scoring so different from traditional modes of composition.
Mack Enns explores the collaboration between game scorers and
players to produce the final score for a game, through case studies
of the Nintendo Entertainment System sound hardware configuration,
and game scores, including the canonic scores for Super Mario Bros.
(1985) and The Legend of Zelda (1986). This book is recommended
reading for students and researchers interested in the composition
and production of video game scores, as well as those interested in
ludo-musicology.

Initially based on Scenes de la vie de boheme (1851), La boheme
follows the trials and tribulations of young artists struggling to
make ends meet. Despite their circumstance, they celebrate small
wins, while seeking love and opportunity. La boheme is an Italian
opera that centers a group of up-and-coming artists. This includes
Rodolfo, a poet, Mimi, a seamstress, Marcello, a painter and
Musetta, a singer. Together, they attempt to earn a living from
their respective crafts. Rodolfo and Marcello struggle to maintain
their relationships with Mimi and Musetta, who are likely to
attract wealthier suitors. In the midst of romance troubles and a
professional drought, Mimi's health becomes a cause for concern. La
boheme is a captivating story about friendship, love and survival.

Amy Beach was celebrated during her lifetime as the foremost female
composer of the United States, and her writing was frequently
inspired by the folk music of America and Britain. Originally for
piano, her Scottish Legend evokes Scotland in its wistful melody,
adorned by Scotch snaps and conveying a folk-like atmosphere, but
spiced up with a few late-Romantic harmonies. Contrasts between
major and minor are also used to telling effect in this gently
attractive piece, sympathetically arranged for the organ by Robert
Gower.
Babes in Toyland (1903) is a libretto by Glen MacDonough. Written
for an operetta composed by Victor Herbert, MacDonough's libretto
is a story for children and adults alike. Taking inspiration from
beloved Mother Goose nursery rhymes, MacDonough crafted an American
classic that has been adapted countless times for theater, film,
and television. As though losing their parents wasn't traumatic
enough, Alan and Jane are forced to live with their wicked Uncle
Barnaby. When he becomes aware of the massive fortune they stand to
inherit, he hatches a plan to get them out of the way. Sent to sea
with sailors Gonzorgo and Roderigo, Alan and Jane are soon lost in
a terrible shipwreck. Somehow, they survive and are taken to the
garden of Contrary Mary-who had nearly been forced to marry
Barnaby. When their Uncle discovers their location, Alan and Jane
are kidnapped and taken to the Forest of No Return, where a
benevolent queen offers to protect them from the treacherous
Spider's Den. Eventually, the children make their way to Toyland,
where they must make a final stand against Barnaby and the Master
Toymaker. Babes in Toyland is a tale of romance and adventure from
Glen MacDonough, a legendary figure of early Broadway. With a
beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript,
this edition of Glen MacDonough's Babes in Toyland is a classic of
American children's fiction reimagined for modern readers.
