Haydn's Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo dates from c.1775 and
was written for the Order of the Brothers of Mercy based in
Eisenstadt. The mass is known for its distinctive 'Benedictus',
which features elaborate soprano writing and an extensive obbligato
organ part from which the work's alternative title, 'Little Organ
Mass', derives. This edition includes the elongated 'Gloria'
composed by Haydn's younger brother Michael, with Haydn's 31-bar
original included as an Appendix. The full score - also available
on sale - contains a critical commentary and full details of
sources. Complete orchestral material and vocal scores are
available on hire/rental.
Suitable for SATB and organ or string orchestra.
From the poems of Anne Bradstreet, Phillis Wheatley, and Emily
Dickinson, The FemPoetiks of American Poetry and Americana Music
presents a discourse of female empowerment, dubbed the FemPoetiks.
Situating the work of these poets in their historical eras, Nicole
Blair considers a sampling of their poems side by side with a
number of song lyrics by singer-songwriters Brandi Carlile,
Rhiannon Giddens, and Lucinda Williams, having found commonalities
of theme, motif, and language between them. Blair argues that while
FemPoetiks has continued to develop in various ways in American
poetry by women, that fact that this discourse finds expression in
songs by Americana female artists indicates a matrilineal line of
influence from the 1630s to today. In order to show the
omnipresence of this powerful feminist discourse, she closes the
book with eleven interviews she conducted with female
singer-songwriters from around the United States. The phenomenon of
FemPoetiks is not limited to the arts but extends into all areas of
American life, from the domestic to the political. FemPoetiks is a
woman's truth.
Although Mozart's Don Giovanni (1787) is the most analysed of all
operas, Lorenzo Da Ponte's libretto has rarely been studied as a
work of poetry in its own right. The author argues that the
libretto, rather than perpetuating the conservative religious
morality implicit in the story of Don Juan, subjects our culture's
myth of human sexuality to a critical rewriting. Combining poetic
close reading with approaches drawn from linguistics,
psychoanalysis, anthropology, political theory, legal history,
intellectual history, literary history, art history and theatrical
performance analysis, she studies the Don Giovanni libretto as a
radical political text of the Late Enlightenment, which has lost
none of its ability to provoke. The questions it raises concerning
the nature of compassion, seduction and violence, and the autonomy
and responsibility of the individual, are still highly relevant for
us today.

Silent Films/Loud Music discusses contemporary scores for silent
film as a rich vehicle for experimentation in the relationship
between music, image, and narrative. Johnston offers an overview of
the early history of music for silent film paired with his own
first-hand view of the craft of creating new original scores for
historical silent films: a unique form crossing musical boundaries
of classical, jazz, rock, electronic, and folk. As the first book
completely devoted to the study of contemporary scores for silent
film, it tells the story of the historical and creative evolution
of this art form and features an extended discussion and analysis
of some of the most creative works of contemporary silent film
scoring. Johnston draws upon his own career in both contemporary
film music (working with directors Paul Mazursky, Henry Bean,
Philip Haas and Doris Doerrie, among others) and in creating new
scores for silent films by Browning, Melies, Kinugasa, Murnau &
Reiniger. Through this book, Johnston presents a discussion of
music for silent films that contradicts long-held assumptions about
what silent film music is and must be, with thought-provoking
implications for both historical and contemporary film music.

Playing duets enhances rhythm and overall playing because
performers must really listen to play well with a partner.
Catherine Rollin beautifully meshes nostalgia, romance and
excitement in this charming set of duets at the intermediate level.
The lively dance selections encourage students to explore
interesting rhythms and chord patterns and how to balance melody
and accompaniment in both parts. Teachers will also enjoy
sight-reading these duets at lessons with more advanced students.
In Uniting Music and Poetry in Twentieth-Century Spain, Nelson R.
Orringer uses both literary and musical analysis to study sung
poems in twentieth-century Spain. In nine chapters, each focusing
on an individual sung poem, song cycle, or various poems set by the
same composer, Orringer enriches and deepens interpretations of the
art-songs by comparing the poet's vision to the composer's. In
examining composers such as Falla, Turina, Mompou, Toldra, Rodrigo,
Montsalvatge, and Rodolfo Halffter, Orringer shows that Spanish
art-song is an exceptional product of Spain's Silver Age and
reveals a new way to understand and appreciate poems set to music
in twentieth-century Spain.
Jarvis Cocker is widely regarded as one of the most original and
memorable lyricists and performers of the last three decades. Here,
for the first time, is a selection of sixty-six lyrics, presented
with commentary and an introduction by the man himself. In this
volume, readers (and Pulp fans) will find such classic Jarvis
lyrics as 'Common People', 'Disco 2000', 'Babies', 'This is
Hardcore' and 'Do You Remember the First Time?' The selection,
assembled by the author, reveals a sensibility that is
unmistakeably Jarvis: a sometimes visceral, sometimes everyday take
on love, relationships and the things we do to each other when the
lights get low. Mother, Brother, Lover takes the reader on a
thirty-year tour into the life, art and preoccupations of one of
the great British artists of the late twentieth century. Shocking,
sharp, clever and funny, it is a beautiful collection of lyrics and
commentary.
for SATB & piano/orchestra Here John Rutter uses oriental
musical influences to create a highly original arrangement of the
popular Christmas carol. The verses are dark and mysterious in
character, with warmth and joy radiating from the choruses. This
setting can also be found in Rutter's Christmas collection Joy to
the World. Scores and parts for the orchestral accompaniment are
available on sale.
for SATB unaccompanied This gentle, lilting anthem sets verses from
the psalms that speak of devotion to and delight in the Lord.
Bednall's sophisticated and appealing musical language gives colour
and expression to the text and creates a devotional atmosphere
perfectly suited to the psalmists' words.
The Poetry and Music of Joaquin Sabina: An Angel with Black Wings
is a thoroughly researched exploration of the life, music, and song
lyrics of the celebrated Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquin Sabina.
Often called "the Spanish Dylan," Sabina has established his own
highly poetic space over the course of his nearly fifty-years as a
recording artist. Using selected song lyrics from his fifteen
studio and three major live albums, Daniel J. Nappo analyzes
Sabina's use of antithesis, simile, metaphor, synesthesia, rhyme,
and other rhetorical and poetic devices. Nappo also devotes a
chapter to Sabina's ability as a narrator and concludes the book
with a comparison of Sabina's best work with that of the American
singer-songwriter and Nobel laureate, Bob Dylan.
