for SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This serene communion motet
sets the last two verses of the Pangue Lingua and oscillates
between 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures. The melodic lines are
expressive and at times melismatic and the divisi in all parts
creates a rich texture.
for SATB double choir, children's choir, and piano Setting a text
by Charles Bennett, The White Field presents a dreamlike scene in
which blackbirds plant songs in the cold earth and await the growth
of their music. Chilcott's melodies echo through the voices, before
a climactic tutti central section giving full voice to the idea of
renewal and hope in the depth of winter. A wistful coda completes
the reverie as the blackbirds settle to await the return of the
sun. The piano part provides harmonic support and rhythmic energy
to the voice parts with chordal and semiquaver figurations
throughout the work. The White Field was commissioned by the
Barbican Centre for London Symphony Chorus and BBC Symphony Chorus
for Sound Unbound, November 2015.
for SATB and small orchestra Full score for this classic Rutter
anthem, which is also available in John Rutter Anthems and in a
version for upper voices.
for CCBar and piano This arrangement of the well-loved spiritual
celebrates gospel style in all its colours, through rhythm, close
harmony, memorable melody, and piano riffs. Ian Crawford is
Director of Music at The King's School in Macclesfield and musical
director of Cambiata North West.
for CCBar and piano This arrangement meets the demand for timeless
popular songs, designed to appeal to teachers and students alike.
For three-part choir, it contains that memorable tune, Joel's
clever lyrics, riffs associated with the original, and an exciting
piano part that supports the singers and provides short interludes.
for TTBB and piano Like the original version for SATB voices, this
new male-voice arrangement of Wide Open Spaces reflects on the
journeys and adventures to be found in the wide opens spaces within
ourselves and in the world around us. The uplifting melody is
passed from the tenors to the baritones before the piece opens out
into an expansive texture with rich harmonies. Quartel introduces a
playful episode of scat singing before a resolute final chorus
brings this evocative piece to a peaceful and serene close.
for SATB double choir and organ In this rousing anthem for double
choir, Rutter uses frequent time signature changes to breathe new
life into Psalm 148. Guiding the two choirs through a series of
musical mood changes using intricate call-and-response patterns,
the composer steadily builds excitement before bringing them
together in a glorious finale. This anthem forms the conclusion to
John Rutter's Psalmfest, for which scores and parts are available
on hire.
for SATB and harp or piano In this arrangement of the traditional
Irish hymn Be thou my vision, Rutter sets the 8th-century text (in
its English translation) to the Irish folk melody known as Slane,
the tune to which it has been sung since 1919. Rutter's harmonies
and piano/harp accompaniment add to the enchanting Gaelic style. An
alternative setting of the same text, to original music by John
Rutter, is also available from Oxford University Press.
for SATB unaccompanied Described by Elgar as an elegy for
unaccompanied chorus, this mournful, reverent, and dignified
setting was composed for a service commemorating Queen Victoria on
the anniversary of her death. The text is by Cardinal John Henry
Newman, whose poem The Dream of Gerontius was set by Elgar in one
of his most enduringly popular works.
for SATB (with divisions) and piano This arrangement of Gruber's
timeless carol is warm and gentle. The first two verses are
accompanied by gentle arpeggiated figures, leading to a third and
final verse which is given profound depth through its largely
unaccompanied scoring. The carol was recorded by the Cambridge
Singers, directed by John Rutter, on the The John Rutter Christmas
Album (Collegium Records CSCD510). Conductor's scores and
instrumental parts are available from the publisher, as is Rutter's
alternative unaccompanied arrangement.
for SATB, optional congregation, and organ or brass choir Christ
the Lord Is Risen Today is an arrangement of the Easter hymn tune
'Lyra Davidica'. Not to be confused with Rutter's own composition,
Christ the Lord is risen again, published as part of the John
Rutter Anniversary Edition. With an exciting introductory fanfare
composed by Rutter, this uplifting anthem provides a powerful
ending to any Easter service. Brass choir score and parts are
available on sale.
for SSSAA unaccompanied Sanctum is a captivating setting of four
movements of the Requiem text, inspired by the landscape of the
west coast of Canada. Each movement depicts an aspect of Vancouver
Island (the water, mountains, wind, and sky), exploring landscape
as a place of healing and sanctuary. The combined effect is some of
Quartel's most atmospheric and dramatic writing to date.
for CCBarBar and piano This celebrated Spiritual has a strong,
appealing, comfortable melody suitable for boys' choirs, and is
arranged skilfully here for four-part choir and piano, with Ia
cappella sections and affecting modulations. Suited to more
established choirs, it has plenty of opportunities for musical
growth.
for SSATB unaccompanied Setting part of a Eucharistic hymn text by
Thomas Aquinas, Adoro te devote is a beautiful, devotional piece
suitable for liturgical or concert use. Flowing and expressive, it
features homophonic sections, melismatic lines, and optional
soaring soprano solos. Adoro te devote was written for Martin Baker
and Westminster Cathedral Choir and is dedicated to the memory of
the victims of the Nepalese Earthquake in April 2015.
for SATB and piano or chamber ensemble Written in 1978 for the
choir of Clare College, Cambridge, this gentle, dreamy lullaby has
gone on to become one of John Rutter's most popular carols. Full
scores and instrumental parts (flute, oboe, harp, and strings) are
available on hire and on sale. Also available in a version for
SSAA.
for SATB (with divisions) and organ, with optional congregation
Here John Rutter follows Vaughan Williams' precedent in setting
this text from the fourth-century Orthodox liturgy of St James of
Jerusalem to the French carol melody 'Jesus Christ shabille en
pauvre'. The result is a hymn which is in turn haunting and
powerful, with a modal tonality that evokes the timeless
sound-world of plainchant.
for SATB and piano or organ First published in Carols for Choirs 5,
this is a beautiful and touching setting of the well-known
fifteenth-century words. The contours of Stroope's melodic writing
perfectly mirror the narrative from the manger scene, while the
simple refrain highlights the Christ-child's innocence as his
mother lulls him to sleep.
for SATB and piano Composed in celebration of David Willcocks's
95th birthday, Jonathan Willcocks sets a suitably uplifting
traditional text from Cornwall, the county of his father's birth.
Telling the story of the shepherd's and wise men's visits to Jesus,
this carol is both joyous and sprightly, and would be suitable for
both Christmas and Epiphany.
