Harry Styles is an English singer, songwriter, and actor. His
musical career began in 2010 as a solo contestant on the British
music competition series The X Factor. Following his elimination
early on, he was brought back to join the boy band One Direction,
which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all
time. Styles released his self-titled debut solo album through
Columbia Records in 2017. It debuted at number one in the UK and
the US, and became one of the world's top-ten best-selling albums
of the year. Its lead single, "Sign of the Times," topped the UK
Singles Chart. Styles' second album, Fine Line (2019), debuted a
top the US Billboard 200 with the biggest first-week sales by an
English male artist in history, and was listed among Rolling
Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Throughout his career,
Styles has earned several accolades, including a Brit Award, a

This treasure trove of an anthology is full to the brim with songs
and seasonal verses that will delight children and encourage them
to sing and play. Illustrated throughout with colour images, the
Summer Songbook features four thematic sections: `Animals and
Birds', `Nature', `Dancing, Rounds and Games' and `Silly Verses'.
Providing ample material for teachers and parents, the book also
includes selections of rhyming words, commentary on the
significance of repetition, rhythm and beat, suggestions for
incorporating movement and gesture, and practical teaching and
parenting tips. For years, teachers, parents and students have
requested that Sally Schweizer publish her collections of songs and
verses - so here they are, presented in four wonderful anthologies
to inspire the imagination and to celebrate the seasonal cycle!
Fantasy for Violin and Piano was originally written for the final
scene of the feature film Ladies in Lavender where two Cornish
sisters (Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) attend a London
premiere of a young virtuoso violinist (Daniel Bruhl) who they have
been nurturing back to health after a tragic accident at sea.
Although the piece was supposedly composed by the fictional Boris
Danilov, the job of creating an authentic period piece of dazzling
violin music fell to the film's composer, Nigel Hess, who utilized
the main theme of the film, transforming the romantic major theme
into an extended, bravura minor variation full of dramatic
intensity and longing. It has now become a popular piece in its own
right, establishing itself (not unlike the Warsaw Concerto before
it) as an audience favourite in the concert repertoire. The piece
was performed on the film soundtrack by Joshua Bell with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the composer.
Faure was not drawn to compose a Requiem because of the death of a
loved one, even though his mother had died during the early stages
of composition and his father had passed away two years before.
Faure's composition does not set his Requiem to the standard
liturgical text, instead adding a lyrical Pie Jesu and transcendent
Paradisum, and omitting the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum - which, for
most composers, are opportunities to demonstrate the dramatic
possibilities available with the choral and orchestral forces. As a
result the mood of the Requiem is relatively calm and peaceful and
often referred to as a lullaby of death. Faure's unconventional
composition has become a firm favourite in the repertoire and
available here is the vocal score, for soloists and SATB choir with
piano accompaniment, as edited by Desmond Ratcliffe.
A terrific collection of songs by George Gershwin that the composer
has arranged as piano solos. Ideal for the intermediate pianist and
a great insight into the mind of one America's greatest composers.

The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since
the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through
every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were
illegally produced and distributed without any copyrights or
royalties paid to the master composers who created these musical
canons. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate
and legal editions of these books ever produced. You won't even
notice the difference...the covers look the same, the engravings
look the same, the songlist is nearly identical, and the price
remains fair even on a musician's salary! But every conscientious
musician will appreciate that these books are now produced legally
and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of
the greatest music ever written! 400 songs, including: Air Mail
Special * Birdland * Bye Bye Blackbird * Caravan * Doxy * Fly Me to
the Moon (In Other Words) * Georgia * Girl Talk * I Remember You *
I Thought About You * In Walked Bud * The Jodi Grind * Just the Way
You Are * Killer Joe * Little Sunflower * Mercy, Mercy, Mercy *
Moanin' * The Nearness of You * Now's the Time * Old Devil Moon *
Phase Dance * St. Thomas * Speak Low * Stardust * Tangerine * Tenor
Madness * Watch What Happens * Whisper Not * Willow Weep for Me *
Yardbird Suite * and more.
Contains two versions of the vocal parts - for SATB and piano or
orchestra, or SS or SA and piano or orchestra.
Hollywood film music is often mocked as a disreputably "applied"
branch of the art of composition that lacks both the seriousness
and the quality of the classical or late-romantic concert and
operatic music from which it derives. Its composers in the 1930s
and '40s were themselves often scornful of it and aspired to
produce more 'serious' works that would enhance their artistic
reputation. In fact the criticism of film music as slavishly
descriptive or manipulatively over-emotional has a history that is
older than film - it had even been directed at the relatively
popular operatic and concert music written by some of the emigre
Hollywood composers themselves before they had left Europe. There,
as subsequently in America, such criticism was promoted by the
developing project of Modernism, whose often high-minded opposition
to mass culture used polarizing language that drew, intentionally
or not, upon that of gender difference. Regressive, late-romantic
music, the old argument ran, was - as women were believed to be -
emotional, irrational, and lacking in logic. This book seeks to
level the critical playing field between film music and "serious
music," reflecting upon gender-related ideas about music and
modernism as much as about film. Peter Franklin broaches the
possibility of a history of twentieth-century music that would
include, rather than marginalize, film music - and, indeed, the
scores of a number of the major Hollywood movies discussed here,
like The Bride of Frankenstein, King Kong, Rebecca, Gone With The
Wind, Citizen Kane and Psycho. In doing so, he brings more detailed
music-historical knowledge to bear upon cinema music, often
discussed as a unique and special product of film, and also offers
conclusions about the problematic aspects of musical modernism and
some arguably liberating aspects of "late-romanticism."

Until recently, most scholars neglected the power of hearing cinema
as well as seeing it. Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film
Theory breaks new ground by redirecting the arguments of
foundational texts within film theory to film sound tracks. The
book includes sustained analyses of particular films according to a
range of theoretical approaches: psychoanalysis, feminism, genre
studies, post-colonialism, and queer theory. The films come from
disparate temporal and industrial contexts: from Classical
Hollywood Gothic melodrama (Rebecca (1940)), to contemporary,
critically-acclaimed science fiction (Gravity (2013)). Along with
sound tracks from canonical American films, such as The Searchers
(1956) and To Have and Have Not (1944), Walker analyzes independent
Australasian films: examples include Heavenly Creatures (1994), a
New Zealand film that uses music to empower its queer female
protagonists; and Ten Canoes (2006), the first Australian feature
film with a script entirely in Aboriginal languages. Understanding
Sound Tracks Through Film Theory thus not only calls new attention
to the significance of sound tracks-it also focuses on the sonic
power of characters representing those whose voices have all too
often been drowned out. Dominant studies of film music tend to be
written for those who are already musically trained. Similarly,
studies of film sound tend to be jargon-heavy. By contrast,
Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory is both rigorous and
accessible to all scholars with a basic grasp of cinematic and
musical structures. Moreover, the book brings together film
studies, musicology, history, politics, and culture. Therefore,
Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory will resonate for
scholars across the liberal arts, and for anyone interested in
challenging the so-called "hegemony of the visual."
