This rhythmic and spirited setting of the familiar hymn starts off
with men's voices split into three- to six-part harmony in
homophony. The women join and the texture thickens and varies
producing a broad and spacious sound, decorated with syncopation
and dramatic pauses. This compelling arrangement is certain to gain
standing ovations and is a 'must have' for larger church, concert,
and university choirs.
This unique volume contains, in parallel translation, a thousand of
the most frequently performed Lieder, both piano-accompanied and
orchestral. Composers are arranged alphabetically, with their songs
appearing under poet in chronological order of composition - thus
allowing the reader to engage in depth with a particular poet and
at the same time to follow the composer's development. Richard
Stokes, whose work in this field is already widely acclaimed,
provides illuminating short essays on each composer's approach to
Lieder composition, as well notes on all the poets who inspired the
songs. The volume is notable for the accuracy and elegance of its
translations, and for its fidelity to the German verse: every care
has been taken to print the words of the sung text, while adhering
to the versification and punctuation of the original poem.
Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann, Goethe, Heine and Morike are
among the highlights of a book which, together with an illuminating
foreword by Ian Bostridge, will be indispensable for every music
lover.
Historic accounts and new material illuminate the creation, early
history and artistic intentions of Britten's first opera. The
premiere of Peter Grimes on 7 June 1945 announced the emergence of
the first great composer of opera in English since Purcell.
Surviving documents offer evidence of the complex interaction of
differing ideas about the possible shape and content of the new
work, most notably the composition draft, which these essays are
particularly concerned to illuminate. They juxtapose historic
material with fresh studies: three items written by members of
theteam involved in the 1945 production are set alongside
specially-commissioned articles, with the three-fold intention of
presenting the views of some of the creators of the opera,
outlining the work's early history, and offeringcontemporary
perspectives on its historical context and its message.Professor

significant achievement in Britten studies. MUSIC AND LETTERS
In 1725 Johann Sebastian Bach wrote two keyboard suites for his
wife Anna Magdalena, whom he married in 1721. These became the
first entries in a book in which, over the next twenty years, were
gathered together both keyboard pieces and vocal works by Johann
Sebastian and his two sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann
Christian as well as such composers as Couperin, Boehm, Petzold and
Hasse. An illuminating portrait of domestic music-making in the
Bach family during the Leipzig period, this authoritative new
edition of the book contains the keyboard pieces only, including
the well-known Minuet in G and Prelude in C, from The Well-Tempered
Clavier, Part I, and more substantial items such as C. P. E. Bach's
Solo per il Cembalo in E flat (early versions of Partitas Nos. 3
and 6 and French Suites Nos. 1 and 2 are excluded). This
first-class edition, providing an important and attractive
introduction to the Baroque style, also contains invaluable advice
on appropriate tempo, phrasing, articulation and ornamentation in
accordance with contemporary performance practice.
Understanding Game Scoring explores the unique collaboration
between gameplay and composition that defines musical scoring for
video games. Using an array of case studies reaching back into the
canon of classic video games, this book illuminates the musical
flexibility, user interactivity and sound programming that make
game scoring so different from traditional modes of composition.
Mack Enns explores the collaboration between game scorers and
players to produce the final score for a game, through case studies
of the Nintendo Entertainment System sound hardware configuration,
and game scores, including the canonic scores for Super Mario Bros.
(1985) and The Legend of Zelda (1986). This book is recommended
reading for students and researchers interested in the composition
and production of video game scores, as well as those interested in
ludo-musicology.
(Piano Method). The great Baroque master composer Johann Sebastian
Bach (1685-1750) wrote music for every combination of instruments
and voices. His simplest and purest work are four-part chorale
compositions and settings, so perfectly constructed that they evoke
meditative spirituality. "Figured bass" was a Baroque system of
notating harmony. In addition 371 chorales, this collection
includes 69 melodies with figured bass. This classic Schirmer
edition, edited by Albert Riemenschneider, has sold over 1,000,000
copies since its release in the early 20th century. Primarily for
keyboard, the chorales can also be played by other instruments.

Very Easy Little Peppers is the first book in a five-part series by
Elissa Milne, Australian-based composer, teacher, and writer. Each
book is filled with fun jazz pieces that can be used both as
pedagogical studies and as repertoire pieces. Very Easy Little
Peppers starts at Pre-Grade 1-Grade 1 and progresses to the
standard required for the first exam. The pieces have been written
with the young pianist in mind, avoiding leaps that are difficult
for small hands and incorporating suitably short and lighthearted
pieces, and introduces a range of keys, rhythms and performance
techniques. Technique is developed alongside musicality, helping
young players to move towards grade exams and the other books in
the series.
