Defunct Federalisms - Critical Perspectives on Federal Failure (Hardcover, New edition): Emilian Kavalski, Magdalena Zolkos Defunct Federalisms - Critical Perspectives on Federal Failure (Hardcover, New edition)
Emilian Kavalski, Magdalena Zolkos
R3,914 Discovery Miles 39 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the end of the Cold War the global arena has become a place for dynamic change, in particular for federal political units. The focus on defunct federalisms draws attention not only to the difference between state-making and nation building, it also points to the fact that state-making does not necessarily lead to the creation of a national identity. This comparative volume looks at the track record of several defunct federalisms to identify options that have been overlooked and decisions that precipitated the collapse. Bringing together insights from the study of state failure and federal collapse, it examines the ways in which parallel assessment is crucial for suggesting the complex structures of identity accommodation in federal entities. The volume is ideal for advanced undergraduates and graduate students as well as university lecturers and researchers working on the issues related to contemporary federalism, history of federal units and the questions of national identity.

Hong Kong, China - Learning to belong to a nation (Paperback): Gordon Mathews, Eric Ma, Tai-lok Lui Hong Kong, China - Learning to belong to a nation (Paperback)
Gordon Mathews, Eric Ma, Tai-lok Lui
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The idea of 'national identity' is an ambiguous one for Hong Kong. Returned to the national embrace of China on 1 July 1997 after 150 years as a British colony, the concept of national identity and what it means to "belong to a nation" is a matter of great tension and contestation in Hong Kong. Written by three academic specialists on Hong Kong cultural identity, social history, and mass media, this book explores the processes through which the people of Hong Kong are "learning to belong to a nation" by examining their relationship with the Chinese nation and state in the recent past, present, and future. It considers the complex meanings of and debates over national identity in Hong Kong over the past fifty years and especially during the last decade following Hong Kong's return to China. It also places these arguments within a larger, global perspective, to ask what Hong Kong can teach us about national identity and its potential transformations. Multidisciplinary in its approach, Hong Kong and China explores national identity in terms of theory, mass media, survey date, ethnography and history, and will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese history, cultural studies, and nationalism.

From Peoples into Nations - A History of Eastern Europe (Hardcover): John Connelly From Peoples into Nations - A History of Eastern Europe (Hardcover)
John Connelly
R846 Discovery Miles 8 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A sweeping narrative history of Eastern Europe from the late eighteenth century to today In the 1780s, the Habsburg monarch Joseph II decreed that henceforth German would be the language of his realm. His intention was to forge a unified state from his vast and disparate possessions, but his action had the opposite effect, catalyzing the emergence of competing nationalisms among his Hungarian, Czech, and other subjects, who feared that their languages and cultures would be lost. In this sweeping narrative history of Eastern Europe since the late eighteenth century, John Connelly connects the stories of the region's diverse peoples, telling how, at a profound level, they have a shared understanding of the past. An ancient history of invasion and migration made the region into a cultural landscape of extraordinary variety, a patchwork in which Slovaks, Bosnians, and countless others live shoulder to shoulder and where calls for national autonomy often have had bloody effects among the interwoven ethnicities. Connelly traces the rise of nationalism in Polish, Austro-Hungarian, and Ottoman lands; the creation of new states after the First World War and their later absorption by the Nazi Reich and the Soviet Bloc; the reemergence of democracy and separatist movements after the collapse of communism; and the recent surge of populist politics throughout the region. Because of this common experience of upheaval, East Europeans are people with an acute feeling for the precariousness of history: they know that nations are not eternal, but come and go; sometimes they disappear. From Peoples into Nations tells their story.

Balkan Transnationalism at the Time of Neoliberal Catastrophe (Hardcover): Dusan I. Bjelic Balkan Transnationalism at the Time of Neoliberal Catastrophe (Hardcover)
Dusan I. Bjelic
R3,916 Discovery Miles 39 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Offering a fresh look at the ways in which neoliberalism has claimed to cure the Balkan region of its ethnic particularities under the pretext of Europeanization, this book shows how the reconfiguration of the economic, political, and cultural landscape of the region has resulted in its functioning as Europe's neocolony. The contributors to this volume engage in postcolonial analysis of the Balkans' past and present coloniality by way of interrogating race, racism, trauma, film, and global capitalism. They challenge the idea of a United Europe that rests on the assumption that the European Union's 'newness' represents both a clean slate and the right to shift ownership of its colonial histories to former colonial subjects and their national histories. Taken as a whole, the volume seeks to transform Europe's colonial amnesia into postcolonial awareness and to speak from within the Balkans as a site of Europe's neocolony. As it critically interrogates a neocolonial reconfiguration of the Balkans as a massive social overhaul, which includes at once global integration and local social disintegration, this book will be of interest to those studying the region, as well as postcolonialism in general. This book was originally published as a special issue of Interventions: Journal of Postcolonial Studies.

Iraqi Arab Nationalism - Authoritarian, Totalitarian and Pro-Fascist Inclinations, 1932-1941 (Paperback): Peter Wien Iraqi Arab Nationalism - Authoritarian, Totalitarian and Pro-Fascist Inclinations, 1932-1941 (Paperback)
Peter Wien
R1,611 Discovery Miles 16 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Peter Wien presents a provocative discussion on the history of Iraq and the growth of nationalism during the 1930s and early 1940s. He deconstructs the established view that a large proportion of the nationalist movement in Iraq during this period was heavily influenced by Nazi Germany, arguing that the admiration for Germany was highly nuanced, and only rarely translated into admiration for Nazism. National unity and patriotism were important, but models of leadership were overwhelmingly based on Iraqis and not Hitler.

Analyzing the activities of the Iraqi youth and Jewish Iraqis, Iraqi Arab Nationalism gives an understanding of Iraqis from diverse backgrounds. It incorporates source material not previously used in discussions of Iraq and nationalism and contains autobiographical and biographical material from officers, intellectuals and politicians, along with contemporary journalistic writings, which sheds new light on Iraqi nationalism.

Leadership and Nationalism in Azerbaijan - Ali Mardan bey Topchibashov, Founder and Creator (Hardcover): Jamil Hasanli Leadership and Nationalism in Azerbaijan - Ali Mardan bey Topchibashov, Founder and Creator (Hardcover)
Jamil Hasanli
R3,922 Discovery Miles 39 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ali Mardan bey Topchibashov was a prominent politician, who played a crucial role in the history of Azerbaijan. One of the most striking personalities in the history of Azerbaijan, the founder of liberal ideas, and the first President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, he led the Muslim faction in the first Russian Duma and the Union of Muslims of Russia and was a central figure of the Caucasian emigres in Europe. This book analyses and presents the life of the first independent Azerbaijani political leaders. Based on extensive research from archives in Azerbaijan, France, Georgia, Russia (Moscow and Kazan) and the UK, some of which are newly accessible, it traces the political personality of Topchibashov as one of the largest Muslim leaders and founder of the Azerbaijan Republic. At the same time, it offers insights into the history of the formation and creation of the national consciousness of the Russian Muslims and tracks the challenges in the national and religious policy of the Imperial administration of the Soviet Union. The author sheds light on the significant problems of the Russian Empire (nationalities specifically) and global movements such as the post-World War I settlement and the difficulties of the many non-Russian groups that declared independence after the Bolshevik rise of power. Filling a lacuna in modern Azerbaijan history, this book will be of interest to academics working on Russian, Soviet, South Caucasus and Central Asian History, in particular Russian Empire, Muslim nations, and nationalism in Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Flagging Patriotism - Crises of Narcissism and Anti-Americanism (Hardcover): Ella Shohat, Robert Stam Flagging Patriotism - Crises of Narcissism and Anti-Americanism (Hardcover)
Ella Shohat, Robert Stam
R1,812 Discovery Miles 18 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The question "Why do they hate us?" is one of the most oft-cited puzzles of contemporary American affairs, yet it 's not clear to whom "they" or "us" refers, nor even what "hate" means. In this bold new work, Ella Shohat and Robert Stam take apart the "hate discourse" of right-wing politics, placing it in an international context. How, for example, do other nations love themselves, and how is that love connected to their attitudes toward America? Is love of country "monogamous" or can one love many countries? When can a country 's self-love be a symptom of self-hatred?

Drawing upon their extensive experience with South American, European, and Middle Eastern societies, the authors have written a long engagement with a problem that refuses to go away. Flagging Patriotism considers these complex features of "being patriotic," and in so doing insists that the idea of patriotism, instead of being rejected or embraced, be accorded the complex identity it possesses.

The Germans of the Soviet Union (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Irina Mukhina The Germans of the Soviet Union (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Irina Mukhina
R4,361 Discovery Miles 43 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Germans were a very substantial minority in Russia, and many leading figures, including the Empress Catherine the Great, were German. Using rarely seen archival information, this book provides an account of the experiences of the Germans living in the Soviet Union from the early post-revolution period to the post-Soviet era following the collapse of communism. Setting out the history of this minority group and explaining how they were affected by the Soviet regime's nationality policies, the book:

  • describes the character of the ethnic Germanic groups, demonstrating their diversity before the execution of the policy of systematic deportations by the Stalinist authorities from 1937 to 1947
  • argues that there was not one but several episodes of deportation within this period
  • considers the different dimensions of this policy, including the legal and economic structures of, and everyday life in, the Soviet special settlements
  • investigates the 'women's dimension' of deportation, especially the role of women in the preservation of ethnic identity among the afflicted groups
  • explores the long term consequences of Soviet deportations and exile on the identity of the Soviet Germans.
Nationalism and Global Solidarities - Alternative Projections to Neoliberal Globalisation (Hardcover): James Goodman, Paul James Nationalism and Global Solidarities - Alternative Projections to Neoliberal Globalisation (Hardcover)
James Goodman, Paul James
R4,202 Discovery Miles 42 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The institutions and structures of modern globalization and the modern nation-state were formed through concurrent processes and have changed in relation to each other. This simple statement goes directly against those who would treat nationalism and globalism as the antithetical outcomes of two succeeding epochs. Likewise it challenges those who would narrowly define globalization as that which undermines the nation-state. However, it still leaves much to argue about. The apparently contradictory practices and ideologies of globalism and nationalism have been in tension ever since nation-states formed in the nineteenth century as part of globalizing system of states.
In the present century these tensions have become even more pronounced with many writers from both the Left and the Right proclaiming that globalization is effecting a tidal wave of change, leaving the nation-state behind in its wake. Despite the immensity of the change, it is becoming clearer that globalization is not drowning everything. It is certainly possible that processes of globalization may eventually undermine modern forms of nation-state sovereignty, but there is no inevitability about such an outcome, neither in logic nor in the day-to-day details of how power operates around the world. What is happening to the nation-state under conditions of intensified globalization, how should we respond? This is the first problematic addressed by the book.
We have seen both nationalist revivals and reassertion of movements from below - from neo-tribalism and new forms of traditionalism to anti-globalization movements and new kinds of grass-roots politics. These suggest the need for a very different approach -different from the seamless 'world of flows', or technologically-driven 'network society' suggested by some. Yet the extent of 'disorder' can be exaggerated. A number of otherwise sophisticated writers have found themselves arguing that the postmodern world has become increasingly fragmented without having an account of the level at which fragmentation takes place, and the level at which reintegration is occurring. Globalization cannot be understood simply as processes of disorder, fragmentation or rupture. Nor, on the other hand, is it simply a force of homogenization.
This leads us to the second problematic of the book. Globalism heralds a new era of corporate globalization, but at the same time it generates new foundations for identification and mobilization. Just as classical imperialism generated anti-imperialist movements and anti-colonial nationalisms, so today's 'empire' generates new frameworks for identification and mobilization. It seems that globalizing social forces generate frameworks beyond the national, but in the process create new foundations for nationalism. The book asks the following questions. Are we entering a new phase in the relationship between internationality and nationalism, or is nationalism rendered irredeemably contradictory, and anachronistic? Does nationalism re-enter by the back door, renewed and invigorated, whether as a partner of globalism or as its bete noir? What are the contemporary bases for a politics of solidarity in a globalizing world? These questions run implicitly through all the chapters.

Gender and the Radical and Extreme Right - Mechanisms of Transmission and the Role of Educational Interventions (Hardcover):... Gender and the Radical and Extreme Right - Mechanisms of Transmission and the Role of Educational Interventions (Hardcover)
Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Hilary Pilkington
R3,907 Discovery Miles 39 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gender and the Radical and Extreme Right takes up an important and often-overlooked across scholarship on the radical right, gender, and education. These subfields have mostly operated independent of one another, and the scholars and practitioners who attend to educational interventions on the far right rarely address gender directly, while the growing body of scholarship on gender and the far right typically overlooks the issue of educational implications. This edited volume steps into this space, bringing together seven chapters and an afterword to help readers rethink the educational implications of research on gender and the radical right. As a starting point for future dialogue and research across previously disparate subfields, this volume highlights education as one space where such an integration may be seen as a fruitful avenue for further exploration. This book was originally published as a special issue of Gender and Education.

Nationalisms in Japan (Hardcover): Naoko Shimazu Nationalisms in Japan (Hardcover)
Naoko Shimazu
R4,207 Discovery Miles 42 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nationalisms in Japan brings together leading specialists in the field to discuss how notions of 'nationalism' in modern Japan impinges on all aspects of social, political and cultural understanding of the Japanese nation or the Japanese state. This book is clearly presented and jargon-free, and encompasses a chronological period of roughly two hundred years, beginning with a discussion of some of the early Japanese national thinkers of the Mito School, and ending with a contemporary discussion of the official visits made by Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichiro to the highly controversial Yasukuni Shrine. This wide chronological period allows for important observations about the evolution of nationalism, suggesting that Japan actually houses multiple 'nationalisms'.

Presenting new insights and understanding, this is a valuable addition to those working on modern Japan and nationalism.

Fascism, Populism and American Democracy (Hardcover): Leonard Weinberg Fascism, Populism and American Democracy (Hardcover)
Leonard Weinberg
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hard right-wing politics is growing in popularity in America, marked by Donald Trump's success in the 2016 election, and it is worth questioning what this means for the American democratic system. This book seeks to explain the vulnerability of democracies to the appeal of right-wing politics through a contemporary case study of the US, and how democracies are possibly under threat from a conflict between popular attitudes and institutional paralysis. Various forms of American right-wing extremism are examined here, such as the alt-right, the radical right and the Religious right, but their perceived relevance to Trump's victory is questioned. Even still, this book asks the question: can the far-right prevail under the American way?

European Integration and the Nationalities Question (Hardcover): John McGarry, Michael Keating European Integration and the Nationalities Question (Hardcover)
John McGarry, Michael Keating
R4,229 Discovery Miles 42 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This topical book examines the effect of European integration on relations between states and minority nations. The editors, picking up an older vocabulary, call this the "nationalities question."
This new collection brings together the leading specialists in the field, and covers a wide range of cases, from Northern Ireland in the West, to Estonia and Latvia in the East, and Cyprus in the South-East. The contributors assess how European integration has affected the preparedness of states to accommodate minorities across a range of fundamental criteria, including: enhanced rights protection; autonomy; the provision of a voice for minorities in the European and international arena; and the promotion of cross-border cooperation among communities dissected by state frontiers. The comprehensive chapters stress the importance of the nationality question, and the fact that, contrary to the hopes and beliefs of many on the left and right, it is not going to go away.
Beginning with an introductory essay that summarizes the impact of "European Integration on the Nationalities Question," this accessible book will be of strong interest to scholars and researchers of Politics, Nationalism, Ethnic Conflict and European Studies.

Sport and English National Identity in a 'Disunited Kingdom' (Paperback): Tom Gibbons, Dominic Malcolm Sport and English National Identity in a 'Disunited Kingdom' (Paperback)
Tom Gibbons, Dominic Malcolm
R1,355 Discovery Miles 13 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Given sport's centrality in English society, what role does it play in symbolising contemporary English national identity? This comprehensive study explores the complex set of relationships between sport and what it means to be English in the twenty-first century. The bond between sport and nationalism has long been recognised, but with increasingly vociferous separatist nationalisms threatening the dismantling of the United Kingdom, a closer analysis is timely. Part one addresses key debates regarding English national identity within the specific sporting contexts of association football, cricket, tennis, cycling and rugby. Part two discusses the complex relationship between religion, sport and English national identity as well as the attitudes and experiences of traditionally marginalized groups, including women, minority ethnic groups and disabled people. Part three considers the perspectives of the other UK nations on the link between sport and English national identity. Sport and English National Identity in a 'Disunited Kingdom' is fascinating reading for all those with an interest in the sociology, politics and history of sport, and the study of nations, nationalism and national identity.

Chinese Nationalism in the Global Era (Paperback): Christopher R. Hughes Chinese Nationalism in the Global Era (Paperback)
Christopher R. Hughes
R1,350 Discovery Miles 13 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Presenting an analysis of the tension between nationalism and globalization in China since the beginning of the 'reform and opening' period in the late 1970s to the present day, this book makes a unique contribution to the on-going debate on the nature of Chinese nationalism. It shows how nationalism is used to link together key areas of policy-making, including economic policy, national unification and foreign policy. Hughes provides historical context to the debate by examining how nationalism became incorporated into the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party in the 1980s and the ways in which this strengthened and combined with globalization discourse through the domestic crisis of the Tiananmen Massacre and the external shock of the Cold War's conclusion. The different perspectives towards this resulting orthodoxy are discussed, including those of the state and dissent in mainland China and the alternative views from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Based on Chinese sources throughout, this book offers a systematic treatment of Chinese nationalism, providing conceptual insights that allow the reader to grasp the complex weave of Chinese nationalist sentiment today and its implications for the future.

Liberal Nationalism in Central Europe (Paperback): Stefan Auer Liberal Nationalism in Central Europe (Paperback)
Stefan Auer
R1,621 Discovery Miles 16 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After the collapse of communism there was a widespread fear that nationalism would pose a serious threat to the development of liberal democracy in the countries of central Europe. This book examines the role of nationalism in post-communist development in central Europe, focusing in particular on Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It argues that a certain type of nationalism, that is liberal nationalism, has positively influenced the process of postcommunist transition towards the emerging liberal democratic order.

The Persistence of the Palestinian Question - Essays on Zionism and the Palestinians (Hardcover): Joseph Massad The Persistence of the Palestinian Question - Essays on Zionism and the Palestinians (Hardcover)
Joseph Massad
R4,063 Discovery Miles 40 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this erudite and groundbreaking series of essays, renowned author Joseph Massad asks and answers key questions, such as: What has been the main achievement of the Zionist movement? What accounts for the failure of the Palestinian National Movement to win its struggle against Israel? What do anti-Semitism, colonialism and racism have to do with the Palestinian/Israeli 'conflict'?

Joseph Massad offers a radical departure from mainstream analysis in order to expose the causes for the persistence of the 'Palestinian Question'. He proposes that it is not in de-linking the Palestinian Question from the Jewish Question that a resolution can be found, but by linking them as one and the same question. All other proposed solutions, the author argues, are bound to fail.

Deeply researched and documented, this book analyzes the failure of the 'peace process' and proposes that a solution to the Palestinian Question will not be found unless settler-colonialism, racism, and anti-Semitism are abandoned as the ideological framework for a resolution. Individual essays further explore the struggle over Jewish identity in Israel and the struggle among Palestinians over what constitutes the Palestinian Question today.

Pamela Erskine-Loftus, Mariam Al-Mulla, Victoria Hightower
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The 1970s saw the emergence and subsequent proliferation across the Arabian Peninsula of 'national museums', institutions aimed at creating social cohesion and affiliation to the state within a disparate population. Representing the Nation examines the wide-ranging use of exhibitionary forms of national identity projection via consideration of their motivations, implications (current and future), possible historical backgrounds, official and unofficial meanings, and meanings for both the user/visitor and the multiple creators. The book responds to, due to the importance placed on tradition, heritage and national identity across all the states of the Peninsula, and the growth of re-imagined and new museums, the need for far greater discussion and research in these areas.

Nineteenth Century Spain - A New History (Hardcover): Mark Lawrence Nineteenth Century Spain - A New History (Hardcover)
Mark Lawrence
R4,053 Discovery Miles 40 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nineteenth century Spain deserves wider readership. Bedevilled by lost empires, wars, political instability and frustrated modernisation, the country appeared backward in relation to northern Europe and even in relation to much of its own geographical periphery. This new history, the first survey of its kind in English in more than a hundred years, offers a fresh perspective on this century, showing how and why elements of backwardness and modernity ran in parallel through Spain. Bounded by the military and imperial crises of 1808 and 1898, this study pays special attention to the experience of war on politics and society, and integrates the latest historical debates in its analysis.

Morality and Nationalism (Hardcover, New): Catherine Frost Morality and Nationalism (Hardcover, New)
Catherine Frost
R4,210 Discovery Miles 42 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book takes a unique approach to explore the moral foundations of nationalism.
Drawing on nationalist writings and examining almost 200 years of nationalism in Ireland and Quebec, the author develops a theory of nationalism based on its role in representation.
The study of nationalism has tended towards the construction of dichotomies arguing, for example, that there are political and cultural, or civic and ethnic, versions of the phenomenon. However, as an object of moral scrutiny this bifurcation makes nationalism difficult to work with.
This book takes a unique approach to explore the moral foundations of nationalism. The author draws on nationalist writings to see how nationalists themselves argued for their cause and examines almost two hundred years of nationalism in two well-known cases, Ireland and Quebec. The author identifies which themes, if any, are common across the various forms that nationalism can take and then goes on to develop a theory of nationalism based on its role in representation. This representation-based approach provides both a basis for the moral claim of nationalism while at the same time identifying grounds on which this claim can be evaluated and limited.
It will be of strong interest to political theorists, especially those working on nationalism, multiculturalism and minority rights. The special focus in the book on the Irish and Quebec cases also makes it relevant reading for specialists in these fields as well as for other area studies where nationalism is an issue.
