This cruising guide for ocean voyagers provides invaluable passage-planning information for tried and tested routes around the world. Climates and weather patterns, currents, seasons and timings are key to selecting routes, but just as important is knowing something about the countries that you will arrive in. Details of the expected formalities and regulations are followed by essential information on key landfalls, accompanied by the first-hand observations of well-known world sailors and authors Rod Heikell and Andy O'Grady. Text and plans have been updated for this third edition which is illustrated with a number of new photographs to inspire both dreamers and passagemakers. "I have recently been planning a voyage from Trinidad to New Zealand using Ocean Passages and Landfalls by Rod Heikell and Andy O'Grady. The book has been an exceptional resource. The mass of information on a wealth of subjects is excellent. The layout is beautifully put together and very accessible. The pilotage and chartlets will be invaluable. The book will certainly be travelling with me and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anybody who is planning ocean voyaging." Theresa Kewell, S/Y Mr Blue 'This is a 'blue planet' book. Its scope is awe-inspiring as it takes an overview of the globe as the yachtsman's potential cruising ground... It is of course possible to glean all the macro information from scientific geophysical sources, but the personality and experience of the authors adds an indispensable ingredient.'

Inland Waterways of France Volume 1 North and Centre, 1 - North and Centre (Paperback, 9th edition): David Edwards-May Inland Waterways of France Volume 1 North and Centre, 1 - North and Centre (Paperback, 9th edition)
David Edwards-May; Edited by Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson Ltd
R668 R609 Discovery Miles 6 090 Save R59 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The ninth edition of Inland Waterways of France is the ideal guide for planning cruises in and through the most fascinating and diverse waterway network in Europe. This edition takes a new paperback format, split into three volumes. Author David Edwards-May presents a detailed overview of the waterways extending from the English Channel through Northern France, Picardy and Paris to Central France and Burgundy. This system totals 2700 kilometres of waterways that are as vibrant as ever, and include the new Seine-Nord Europe Canal, now under construction, to be completed by 2028. Recreational use is growing alongside the commercial traffic on the busier waterways, while Champagne, Burgundy and Central France have become cruising destinations in their own right. This first volume of the new edition sets out the current state of the network in 200 pages in full colour, with detailed maps of junctions and other key sites on the network, overview maps for each waterway, and route descriptions. It is a unique blend of practical information, maps, background historical notes and colour photographs.

Avionics Navigation Systems, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd ed): M Kayton Avionics Navigation Systems, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd ed)
M Kayton
R4,705 Discovery Miles 47 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An indispensable resource for all those who design, build, manage, and operate electronic navigation systems

Avionics Navigation Systems, Second Edition, is a complete guide to the art and science of modern electronic navigation, focusing on aircraft. It covers electronic navigation systems in civil and military aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and manned spacecraft. It has been thoroughly updated and expanded to include all of the major advances that have occurred since the publication of the classic first edition. It covers the entire field from basic navigation principles, equations, and state-of-the-art hardware to emerging technologies. Each chapter is devoted to a different system or technology and provides detailed information about its functions, design characteristics, equipment configurations, performance limitations, and directions for the future. You'll find everything you need to know about:

  • Traditional ground-based radio navigation
  • Satellite systems: GPS, GLONASS, and their augmentations
  • New inertial systems, including optical rate sensors, micromechanical accelerometers, and high-accuracy stellar-inertial navigators
  • Instrument Landing System and its successors
  • Integrated communication-navigation systems used on battlefields
  • Airborne mapping, Doppler, and multimode radars
  • Terrain matching
  • Special needs of military aircraft
  • And much more

Since the publication of Kayton and Fried's classic work, Avionics Navigation Systems, almost thirty years ago, tremendous strides have been made in the science and practice of navigation: satellite systems, improved sensors, new computer technology and software, interconnected avionics subsystems, and more. Completely updated to include the latest advances in navigation theory, hardware, and software, this brand-new edition provides comprehensive, unified coverage of the principles of modern navigation equipment and systems.

The initial chapters establish the conceptual and technical foundations of the subject, with a concise overview of electronic navigation and a review of crucial principles and equations. Each of the ensuing chapters provides in-depth treatment of a specific navigation technology, including ground-based radio-navigation aids; satellite-based radio-navigation aids; integrated communication-navigation systems; inertial and stellar-inertial navigation systems; air-data sensors and algorithms that derive airspeed, angles of attack and sideslip, and barometric altitude; attitude and heading sensors and displays; Doppler radars, radar altimeters, and mapping radars; and terrain map-matching. The book concludes with a description of land-based and aircraft-carrier-based landing aids, air-traffic management, and avionic interfaces.

Retaining the user-friendly organization of the first edition, each chapter presents basic functions and principles, and then discusses design characteristics and equipment configurations, performance limitations, and sources of error. Each chapter concludes with a prediction of future trends. Comparative performance levels, weights, power consumption, and costs are described where possible. A thorough index makes it easy to find material quickly.

Avionics Navigation Systems, Second Edition, is an indispensable resource for all engineers and systems analysts who design, build, and maintain navigation and avionics equipment, as well as for the pilots and operations staff who use it.

This pilot covers the most remote areas of the west coast of Scotland between Ardnamurchan Point and Cape Wrath and the Island of Skye. Martin Lawrence has completely revised the text and for this edition has added new photographs taken from both the air and sea. The use of full colour throughout the work brings a clarity to the photographs and harbour plans. New photographs have been added to support changes to the text and plans in this 3rd edition. Martin Lawrence has spent many years sailing on the West Coast of Scotland and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation. He is well known as the author of the Yachtsman's Pilot series. "An excellent example of how text, charts and photos can be made to work together to enhance the information available to the navigator. It is also further evidence that this publisher is far ahead of its rivals in presentation of information for the yachtsman". - CT, Yachting Monthly "Yachtsman's Pilot to Skye and NW Scotland is a revelation in clarity. The layout is excellent with line drawings and chartlets on the same page and often with a photograph making it useful to have on deck when eyeballing. This book is an essential item on any boat ruising north of Ardnamurchan Point". - Cruising Association Bulletin

Heraldry of the Oceans - The Garb of the Merchant Seafarer (Paperback): Alastair Arnott Heraldry of the Oceans - The Garb of the Merchant Seafarer (Paperback)
Alastair Arnott 1
R607 R488 Discovery Miles 4 880 Save R119 (20%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Britain traded with many nations throughout history and the bulk of that trade was by sea. To make this possible our merchant seafarers formed a mighty force which was large throughout the nineteenth century and reached its peak in the 1960s. Though seemingly one body, it comprised many individual companies, each of which evolved its own traditions and identity. This book is a celebration of this achievement and an attempt at chronicling these characteristics that give the industry both corporate identity and an element of individuality. The rapid diminution of the British-flagged fleet in recent years has all but extinguished this structure and those who had intimate experience of it are now ageing and their memories fading. We cannot stand in the way of progress, but it is disappointing that so little of this story has previously been recorded. Heraldry of the Oceans will, at least in part, make up for this omission.

Compiled by a team of Cruising Association regional editors and Imray, the Cruising Almanac is an annual publication first published over 100 years ago and long regarded as the perfect on board companion for cruising yachts. Each year, a well-known cruising sailor writes the Preface, and this year's is by Tom Cunliffe. The Almanac covers Northwest Europe from the Shetlands and southern Norway to Gibraltar and West Ireland to the Baltic. Based on first-hand experience and official data, all sections - text, plans, tidal data - are checked and updated annually. With over 750 port entries alongside passage notes (easily identified by their pale blue background colour), it's a vital tool for both planning and whilst at sea. 2021 tide tables for 47 standard ports are included in a separate booklet. The main Almanac contains tidal stream diagrams: full tidal details for secondary ports are included with the text for the relevant port. Updating of the Almanac continues throughout the year, with corrections published monthly on the Cruising Association website Almanac corrections page.

James G. Stavridis, Robert Girrier, Tom Ogden, Jeff Heames
R1,262 Discovery Miles 12 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Watch Officer's Guide, 16th Edition, is a handbook for all deck and combat information center watch officers of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard afloat, in the air, under the sea, and ashore. Originally written more than one hundred years ago, and last revised in 2007, the book provides officers with guidance on the watch in general, communications, shiphandling, standard commands, safety, honors and ceremonies, engineering, and rules of the road - essential elements for success in standing any watch. It offers, in a single volume, a great deal of important information for aspiring officers seeking qualification, ensuring that they have the requisite knowledge and appreciation of the importance of what they are doing. For the more experienced watch officer, this 16th edition continues a long-standing tradition by providing a compendium of information handy for review and for the actual standing of a watch. The lessons and themes are shaped and geared towards the afloat watchstander; though they also provide a foundation for success in other areas of both military and personal life.

'Mediterranean Weather Handbook for Sailors' is an indispensable reference providing a general understanding of the various phenomena concurring to determine weather in the Mediterranean as well as useful forecasting aids. It is written for sailors, not meteorologists; theory is kept to a minimum, while every effort is made to provide clear interpretative tools that are helpful in understanding actual weather and forecasting. Roberto Ritossa is a meteorology expert and this handbook is a result of many years research on Mediterranean weather patterns. This second edition includes details of new and changed websites that offer meteorological services. Throughout the graphics have been improved and for some sections additional illustrations have been added. "Roberto Ritossa has produced an excellent weather text book for those who choose to sail in the Mediterranean. Although it claims to be 'written for sailors, not meteorologists' there is more than enough essential theory to satisfy the keenest of amateur meteorologists. I would certainly buy a copy if I were to ever plan to return to the Mediterranean, as a sailor." - IG, Cruising.

R1,843 Discovery Miles 18 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents multivariate time series methods for the analysis and optimal control of feedback systems. Although ships' autopilot systems are considered through the entire book, the methods set forth in this book can be applied to many other complicated, large, or noisy feedback control systems for which it is difficult to derive a model of the entire system based on theory in that subject area. The basic models used in this method are the multivariate autoregressive model with exogenous variables (ARX) model and the radial bases function net-type coefficients ARX model. The noise contribution analysis can then be performed through the estimated autoregressive (AR) model and various types of autopilot systems can be designed through the state-space representation of the models. The marine autopilot systems addressed in this book include optimal controllers for course-keeping motion, rolling reduction controllers with rudder motion, engine governor controllers, noise adaptive autopilots, route-tracking controllers by direct steering, and the reference course-setting approach. The methods presented here are exemplified with real data analysis and experiments on real ships. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in designing optimal or adaptive controllers not only of ships but also of any other complicated systems under noisy disturbance conditions.

For the past 12 years, Jo Winter has been cruising these waters in her 45' Island Packet, Brother Wind, and she describes it as one of the most diverse, beautiful, unspoilt and undiscovered sailing areas in the world. The book covers thousands of miles of coastline, a multitude of islands and inland up many of the region's navigable rivers. Along with a comprehensive range of information to help with planning a cruise in this region, the introductory section details weather information, including coverage of typhoons, and also indicates piracy risk areas to be avoided. Sailing directions include small scale area plans to orientate the navigator and larger scale plans to show details of harbours and anchorages. Full colour throughout, the plans and numerous photographs illustrate key features and places. Whether transiting the region or planning a more extended cruise along any of the coastlines bordering the South China Sea, this guide is an essential companion.

Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson Ltd was formed in 1904 when three private chart publishing firms amalgamated. Each of these London companies had a long history going back to the mid-18th century. James Imray and Son published an extensive list of charts and pilot books. RH Laurie and Sons was associated with charts published for the East India Company. Norie and Wilson, founded by JW Norie, whose Nautical Tables are still supplied to navigators across the world, produced charts and books on navigation and sold nautical instruments.Until 1939 we were based in the City of London, where long serving cartographers produced charts from copper plate engravings which were supplied to mariners throughout the World. For over a century Blueback Charts were the first choice of many shipping companies. Now based in St Ives in Cambridgeshire, Imray charts are produced digitally for printed and electronic editions by our drawing office team. Our catalogue of yachting charts is regarded by the sailing community as the most comprehensive available. Our paper charts are complemented by a growing list of electronic publications and high quality pilot books by leading authors.
