R555 R513 Discovery Miles 5 130 Save R42 (8%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

Sociology will always remain a dynamic and living science due to its roots in the study of the human condition with reference to human action and interaction. Nursing sociology aims to understand society and how individuals function within it, within the health sector and specifically within the current nursing scenario, in order to provide holistic patient care. Nursing sociology is written from a multicultural perspective, reflecting on South Africa's diversity and explaining complex sociological ideas in a way that is easy to follow. In this 6th edition, substantial attention has been given to aspects of socialisation, social interaction, structure and relationships, social stratification, group dynamics, institutions, organisations and social problems encountered in nursing practice. Pertinent examples of the manifestation of sociology in the nursing profession and its practice as currently experienced in South Africa are also included. Activities allow students to debate issues arising from sociology in the nursing context in group format in order to promote creative thinking and comprehension. Nursing sociology provides students with a clear, easy-to-understand sociological text specifically oriented towards nursing, that emphasises specific aspects and creativity within the nursing environment.

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. The COVID-19 pandemic has made unpaid care more visible through its absence, while also increasing the need for it. Drawing on a range of research projects covering Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US, this book documents a broad spectrum of unpaid work performed by residents, relatives, volunteers and staff in nursing homes. It demonstrates how boundaries between paid and unpaid work are flexible, varying considerably with conditions, time, place and intersectional populations. By examining the complex labour process within nursing homes, this book provides insight and understanding which will be critical in planning for nursing home care post-pandemic.

Paradoxes in Nurses' Identity, Culture and Image - The Shadow Side of Nursing (Paperback): Margaret McAllister, Donna Brien Paradoxes in Nurses' Identity, Culture and Image - The Shadow Side of Nursing (Paperback)
Margaret McAllister, Donna Brien
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines some of the more disturbing representations of nurses in popular culture, to understand nursing's complex identities, challenges and future directions. It critically analyses disquieting representations of nurses who don't care, who kill, who inspire fear or who do not comply with laws and policies. Also addressed are stories about how power is used, as well as supernatural experiences in nursing. Using a series of examples taken from popular culture ranging from film, television and novels to memoirs and true crime podcasts, it interrogates the meaning of the shadow side of nursing and the underlying paradoxes that influence professional identity. Iconic nursing figures are still powerful today. Decades after they were first created, Ratched and Annie Wilkes continue to make readers and viewers shudder at the prospect of ever being ill. Modern storytelling modes are bringing to audiences the grim reality that some nurses are members of the working poor, like Cath Hardacre in Trust Me, and others can be dangerous con artists, like the nurse in Dirty John. This book is important reading for all those interested in understanding the links between nursing's image and the profession's potential as an agent for change.

Researching Trust and Health (Paperback): Julie Brownlie, Alexandra Greene, Alexandra Howson Researching Trust and Health (Paperback)
Julie Brownlie, Alexandra Greene, Alexandra Howson
R1,623 Discovery Miles 16 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is currently a lively debate ongoing in society about the nature of trust and the conditions necessary to establish and sustain it. Given the role of trust in bridging uncertainty, it is perhaps not surprising that as our consciousness of risk has increased, the role and nature of trust in social practices has come under growing scrutiny. These developments are particularly relevant to health because participation in health practices is arguably based on and engendered through trust. There is thus a need for empirically based research, which intelligently unravels this complexity to support all stakeholders in the health arena. This multidisciplinary volume of work addresses this gap by contributing substantively to the exploration of trust in the experience, practice and organization of health. It offers an overview of recent scholarship, based on empirical research, which explores the significance of trust in relation to key health-related issues. At the same time, this text examines conceptual themes in relation to trust more generally, including the relationship between trust and auditing, consent, expert knowledges and social capital.

Promoting a Good Death for Cancer Patients of Asian Culture (Hardcover, New): June Mak Promoting a Good Death for Cancer Patients of Asian Culture (Hardcover, New)
June Mak
R2,660 Discovery Miles 26 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are few enough studies of the needs of dying people in the Western world, but no accessible studies of the needs of dying people in Asian cultures. Now, in this pioneering work, Dr Mui Hing June Mak shows us how a Good Death expresses itself in Hong Kong, and also how this ideal varies and is modified in other Asian societies as this is observed in their own, often inaccessible literature. The author offers a comprehensive review of the literature on dying conduct and needs from several Asian perspectives, and also provides a perceptive analysis of the lessons to be learnt from her qualitative study which employed a 'Grounded Theory' methodology to understand the experiences and end-of-life needs of cancer patients in hospice care in Hong Kong. A relation-based theory, Harmonious Death, is developed. She also makes several suggestions to translate these theoretical concepts into practice. Dr Mak brings to her words not only the disciplined eye of a hospice clinician and academic but also a compassionate insight derived from her direct personal experiences. Close, personal relationship with three dying people were formative of her current research and professional interests, and also the driving concern in ensuring that the voices of all the participants in her study are heard clearly, sympathetically, and poignantly. Audience: The book will be of interest to teachers, students and professionals across the whole range of health and social care and social work, particularly those in palliative or hospice settings, as well as well as those with an interest in behavioural and social sciences, anthropology, philosophy, thanatology, not to mention the humanities. Contents: Foreword by Professor Allan Kellehear . literature review . Western and Chinese perspectives on death and dying . the research study . elements of a Good Death in Chinese culture: awareness of death; maintaining hope; freedom from pain and suffering; maintaining social relations; experiencing personal control; preparation and bidding farewell; accepting the timing of one's death A Harmonious Death, The Good Death models . A Caring Approach in Nursing Administration (Paperback): Jan J. Nyberg A Caring Approach in Nursing Administration (Paperback)
Jan J. Nyberg
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Current mainstream books and publicity about management and administration in health care are concerned with the takeover of health care by managed-care organizations. Many provide lots of quick and externally focused answers. Many of them are economically driven, to the exclusion of humans, values, ethics, and the human spirit of all those who pass through systems as deliverers and receivers of care. On the other hand, there is a new generation of works that address new forms of administration and leadership-works that inspire and evoke foundational changes in health care and forms of organizational leadership and management. This work by Dr. Jan Nyberg is guided by a lifelong career of administration and management that is informed by deeper human dimensions of caring, and more lasting approaches to change than quick-fix, economic takeovers.

Jan Nyberg, an experienced nursing administrator, scholar, and educator, knows another way-from the inside out rather than the outside in. She brings forth her wisdom and knowledge, experiences, and insights so that others may now grasp another way to transform systems for delivery of human caring and healing. This work informs, instructs, and inspires; it invites nurse leaders and other health administrators to reach for what might be, rather than succumbing to what already is.

The Changing Shape of Nursing Practice - The Role of Nurses in the Hospital Division of Labour (Hardcover): Davina Allen The Changing Shape of Nursing Practice - The Role of Nurses in the Hospital Division of Labour (Hardcover)
Davina Allen
R4,356 Discovery Miles 43 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing sociological theories and nursing practice together, The Changing Shape of Nursing Practice develops a dynamic conceptualisation of the nursing role which is rooted in the work setting. It looks back to the factors which have shaped nursing work in the past and forward to those which are likely to shape it in the future.
Nurses' work is changing in two respects: in terms of the place nursing occupies within the health care division of labor and in terms of the routine shifting of work boundaries that nurses experience in their daily work. Davina Allen draws on her detailed observations of the reality of nursing work in a district general hospital to explore these linked themes, focusing on five key work boundaries:
-nurse: doctor
-nurse: manager
-nurse: sup worker
-nurse: patient
-nurse: nurse
"The" "Changing Shape of Nursing Practice" provides unique insight into many of the tensions and dilemmas nurses routinely face and the processes and constraints through which their work is fashioned. It offers a new way of thinking about the nursing role which is particularly relevant at a time when the scope of nursing practice is expanding and when an integrated approach to health and social care is seen as the key to the provision of improved services.

Nursing the Image - Media, Culture and Professional Identity (Paperback): Julia Hallam Nursing the Image - Media, Culture and Professional Identity (Paperback)
Julia Hallam
R1,273 Discovery Miles 12 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ideas of 'nursing' and 'nurses' carry a powerful social charge. The image of the nurse continues to be a symbol of caring and of duty at the same time as it projects a view of femininity, 'stereotypical' in its gender relations.
How has this image come to be contructed?
An empirical investigation of representations of nursing practices in Britain focusing on publicity and promotional materials and their relationship to popular fictional narratives reveals a strong correlation between what are usually described as discrete forms of signification. Recruitment images, the public face of the profession, provide an important source of information and inspiration for those considering nurse training. Julia Hallam, draws from a wide range of sources including biographies, marketing and recruitment literature, popular fiction and film to explore this question. In doing so she makes an original contribution to the debates surrounding gender and occupational identity.
The book will provide a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students on courses such as the social history of nursing, the understanding of health and illness, women's studies, gender studies and sociology courses.

Intellectual Disability Nursing - An Oral History Project (Paperback): Bob Gates, Colin Griffiths, Helen L. Atherton, Su... Intellectual Disability Nursing - An Oral History Project (Paperback)
Bob Gates, Colin Griffiths, Helen L. Atherton, Su McAnelly, Paul Keenan, …
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This unique monograph, based on empirical research, used the oral history approach to explore the careers of 31 intellectual disability nurses from England and the Republic of Ireland; each with at least 30 years' experience. We sought to understand motives for such long service to nursing practice. Some had worked in the intellectual disability hospitals of the 19th and 20th Centuries. In both jurisdictions these have almost closed and been replaced with smaller living configurations; subsequently few such nurses have experience of these institutions. This makes it important to hear their stories, which were digitally recorded; now forming a unique collection in the Royal College of Nursing's archives. These oral histories when synthesised with prevailing discourse of intellectual disability nursing from literature, and research put into perspective contemporary nursing workforce challenges faced by these nurses in both jurisdictions. Their stories are testament, amongst other things, to a strong 'sense of justice... doing the right thing and making a difference'. Some reported a 'very early interest in working with people with intellectual disabilities'. And at 'journey's end' sadly, almost universally, they reported a sense of being 'undervalued'. Their narratives articulate enormous health and social care change witnessed over three decades or more. But above all else they give voice to commitment, dedication, and kindness to a vulnerable, and often marginalised people, those with intellectual disabilities, as such it gives voice to otherwise 'Untold Stories'.

Culture, Health and Illness is the leading international textbook on the role of cultural and social factors in health, illness, and medical care. This new edition meets the ever-growing need for a clear starting point in understanding the clinical significance of cultural and social factors. Fully revised throughout, the fifth edition has expanded its coverage of topics that are challenging both the patient and the carer's understanding of health and illness: poverty and inequality of healthcare, genetics, biotechnology, the internet and health, chronic diseases, drug-resistant infections, changes in nutrition and body image, medical care of migrants, medical technology, global pandemics such as AIDS and malaria, drug and alcohol dependence, and patients' 'languages of distress', a complex topic central to the doctor-patient relationship. In today's world of increasing cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of populations, Culture, Health and Illness is essential reading for students of medicine, nursing, psychiatry, public health, health education, international health and medical anthropology, across the globe.

The Courage to Care - Nurses, Families and Hope (Paperback): Christie Watson The Courage to Care - Nurses, Families and Hope (Paperback)
Christie Watson
R325 R270 Discovery Miles 2 700 Save R55 (17%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

'An inspiring book for our challenging times' Olivia Coleman Nurses have never been more important. We benefit from their expertise in our hospitals and beyond: in our schools, on our streets, in prisons, hospices and care homes. When we feel most alone, nurses remind us that we are not alone at all. In The Courage to Care bestselling author Christie Watson reveals the remarkable extent of nurses' work: - A community mental-health nurse choreographs support for a man suffering from severe depression - A teen with stab wounds is treated by the critical-care team; his school nurse visits and he drops the bravado - A pregnant woman loses frightening amounts of blood following a car accident; it is a military nurse who synchronises the emergency department into immaculate order and focus. Christie makes a further discovery: that, time and again, it is patients and their families - including her own - who show exceptional strength in the most challenging times. We are all deserving of compassion, and as we share in each other's suffering, Christie Watson shows us how we can find courage too. The courage to care. 'Let's be thankful for wonderful nurses - and writers - like Christie Watson' Jacqueline Wilson 'Christie Watson writes with the fullness of her heart to give us insight into the world of patients and nursing, inspiring us to recognise it is how we treat people, how we speak and respond to them, as well as what we do, that heals' Julia Samuel
