The original AO/ASIF Instrumentation manual presented a concise and complete description of the AO instruments. Thoughtfully developed by Fridolin Sequin and Rigmor Tex hammar, the manual discussed in a clear fashion the purpose and care of the various AO instruments that are handled by the operating room staff. One important feature of the first edition was a detailed checklist of the instruments required for the more common operative procedures for treating fractures. Fridolin Sequin was well-suited to author the first edition: his 15 years of experience as a technical engineer for the AO gave him in-depth knowledge of AO instruments, and he drew on the clinical knowledge of Rigmor Texhammar, a consultant and di rector of the AO courses for nurses. Its original feature of com bining a column of text with a column of illustrations meant the manual quickly became accepted as a standard. By 1981, trans lations could be found in English, French, Spanish, and Italian. Not surprisingly, the manual was very popular."

During recent decades there has been a revolutionary change in the life expectancy and quality of life of the hemophiliac. This has been achieved by hematologic and c1inical research, and the future for the hemophiliac depends upon further medical knowledge and research. In spite of the dramatically improved life situation of hemophiliacs, hemorrhagic complications remain a threat. The hemorrhagic disorder may influence and/or aggravate the course of trauma or other diseases in these patients. Hemophiliacs suffering from hemorrhagic complications or eligible for elective surgery should be referred to Hemophilia Treatment and Training Centers, where evaluation and examination are performed by a multidisciplinary team with experience and interest in the disease. The radio10gist is an important member ofthis team. In the past diagnostic imaging has been based mainly on conventional radiography, and this is still very important for the diagnosis ofhemophilic complications, but the diagnostic imaging of today offers a wide range of modalities-conventional radiography, computed tomography, sonography, radionuc1ide imaging, and, in its infancy, magnetic resonance imaging. Thus there is a need for a thorough description of the potential and limitations ofthese modern diagnostic techniques.
The contents of this book are based almost exclusively on purely anatomical researches. These were stimulated by questions posed in clinical practice. The results are directed to practicing surgeons. Their chronological sequence leads to a step by step development of theoretical bases and to a progressive rejection of old conceptions. Especially in the field of orthopaedic surgery, a responsible attitude is possible neither without solid anatomical knowledge, nor without an idea of functional relationships. W. Roux had already demonstrated this and he wanted his works of functional anatomy to be considered from this point of view. He above all preoccupied himself with a uniform theory of functional adaptation. Thus it is understandable that the theories ofRoux formed the basis from which to start. KROMPECHER had made a step forwards in the matter of chondrogenesis when he abandoned the shear theory postulated by Roux and held that compression was the only effective stimulus for the forma tion of cartilage. The research concerning the healing of fractures relies partly on the theory of KROMPECHER which was new at that time.
