Andrea Piccioli, Valentina Gazzaniga, Paola Catalano
R3,635 Discovery Miles 36 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents the results of a unique macroscopic and radiological analysis, by X-ray and CT scan, of the bone pathologies of about 1800 subjects who lived at the time of the Roman Empire (first and second centuries A.D.) and whose remains were recovered during the excavation of a suburban necropolis of Rome. The survey, which represents a collaboration between the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and the Special Superintendent for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome, has yielded incredible images of different orthopaedic diseases in a period when no surgical treatment was available: there are cases of infection (osteomyelitis), metabolic disease (gout), hematologic disease (multiple myeloma), traumatic lesions and their complications and degenerative pathology (osteoarthritis, particularly secondary and overload). A multidisciplinary team including orthopaedists, paleopathologists, radiologists and medical historians has evaluated the major groups of bone disease in the population finding out incredible cases and picture of ortho-traumatologic pathologies in a pre-surgical era. The homogeneity of the sample and the number of subjects make this a study of fundamental importance.

Wide Awake Hand Surgery and Therapy Tips (Paperback, 2nd New edition): Donald Lalonde Wide Awake Hand Surgery and Therapy Tips (Paperback, 2nd New edition)
Donald Lalonde
R3,138 Discovery Miles 31 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The definitive multimedia resource on wide awake hand surgery from renowned experts WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet) eliminates the need for preoperative testing, sedation, intravenous insertion, and monitoring in upper and lower limb surgery. Coupled with minimal pain injection techniques using pure local anesthesia with lidocaine and epinephrine, this technique has significantly improved hand surgery for patients and surgeons in many ways. Wide Awake Hand Surgery and Therapy Tips, Second Edition, provides readers with the best and latest WALANT advances from Donald H. Lalonde and an impressive group of hand surgeons from 15 countries that have incorporated this groundbreaking technique into practice to benefit their patients. Each richly illustrated chapter encompasses evidence-based benefits, step-by-step guidance, patient education tips, detailed injection directions, surgery and therapy tips and tricks, postsurgical management, and related videos. WALANT produces better outcomes in flexor and extensor tendon repair, tendon transfer, tenolysis, tendon grafts, and finger fracture surgery because unsedated patients can easily move reconstructed parts during surgery. This allows surgeons to make required adjustments and teach patients uninterrupted while they are awake. Eliminating sedation also decreases risks, increases patient safety, and reduces pain associated with intravenous insertion. Simple surgeries such as trigger finger and carpal tunnel release no longer require costly main operating rooms. Instead, they can be performed in minor procedure rooms with evidence-based sterility, resulting in lower costs and reduced waste. Shoulder Stiffness - Current Concepts and Concerns (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Eiji Itoi, Guillermo Arce, Gregory I. Bain, Ronald L.... Shoulder Stiffness - Current Concepts and Concerns (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Eiji Itoi, Guillermo Arce, Gregory I. Bain, Ronald L. Diercks, Dan Guttmann, …
R2,413 Discovery Miles 24 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an up-to-date overview of the latest evidence regarding shoulder stiffness or frozen shoulder. All aspects are covered: epidemiology, etiology, anatomy and biomechanics, clinical symptoms, histology and laboratory tests, physical examinations, imaging studies and the various conservative and surgical treatment options. The book is published in cooperation with ISAKOS and reflects the conclusions of the Consensus Meeting of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee in Amsterdam in May 2014, which brought together global opinion leaders in the field. Frozen shoulder itself remains shrouded in mystery. There is ongoing uncertainty over its causation and continuing relative neglect due to the belief that it is a self-limited disease despite the evidence that most patients fail to achieve complete recovery, with many experiencing persistent pain and stiffness. Shoulder Stiffness: Current Concepts and Concerns provides an excellent summary of present knowledge regarding frozen shoulder and will be of value to all who manage the condition.

Practical Urology in Spinal Cord Injury (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): Keith F. Parsons, John M.... Practical Urology in Spinal Cord Injury (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
Keith F. Parsons, John M. Fitzpatrick
R1,570 Discovery Miles 15 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In keeping with the aims of other books in this Series the Editors have concentrated on the practical aspects of management -in this case of the urinary tract in patients with spinal cord injury. It is well accepted that the management of such patients is best done by those with special experience in this field. Nevertheless, it is essential that urologists should be well informed on matters relating to the neuropathic urinary tract since not all patients will be managed in special centres and, whether their problems are acute or chronic, the wrong clinical decision can lead them into a lifetime of problems. The plan of this book is directed towards examining particular problems and providing definitive answers. Even in this enlightened age of medical progress there are many clinical situations where there is often a choice of treatment. Readers of this Series will be aware that, despite an apparent abundance of information on a topic, it is sometimes not possible to reach a firm conclusion on a management problem. Keith Parsons and John Fitzpatrick are to be congratulated on ensuring that for this subject there are good clear guidelines. The data in the book are up to date and the excellent approach to the subject makes it a valuable addition to Clinical Practice in Urology.

Developed by a group of renowned experts, Fractures in the Elderly: A Guide to Practical Management is a major addition to the literature and provides a wealth of specialized knowledge and approaches to care. It is an essential reference for all clinicians who care for older adults as well as fellows and residents in training.

John Charnley - The Man and the Hip (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990): William Waugh John Charnley - The Man and the Hip (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990)
William Waugh
R3,808 Discovery Miles 38 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hip replacement operations have become commonplace during the past ten years, but none the less it is well to remember the struggle to overcome the initial difficulties before the achievement of the successful results which are confidently expected today. Certainly, in the 1950s attempts to relieve pain and restore movement to an arthritic hip frequently failed. Such operations which were practised often involved a prolonged period of immobilisation which would now not be tolerated. For progress to be made orthopaedic surgeons had to rely on the loyalty and stoicism of their patients who allowed untried procedures to be carried out on themselves, often without appreciating the possible outcome. These surgical experiments resulted in progress being made, and the failures led to a greater understanding of the problems involved. The importance of collaboration with bio-engineers was also recognised, and the search began for suitable materials with which to make an artificial joint. Progress was made in many centres throughout the world, and surgeons in the United Kingdom were at the forefront in devising original techniques. Although others also produced new models, John Charnley was a pioneer and an innovator who influenced the development of hip relacement more than any other individual. In telling the story of his life this book is inevitably also the story of the operation, but it is not intended to be a scientific evaluation of his work.

Osteoporosis - Diagnostic and Therapeutic Principles (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996): Clifford J.... Osteoporosis - Diagnostic and Therapeutic Principles (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)
Clifford J. Rosen
R1,627 Discovery Miles 16 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

LA WRENCE G. RAISZ, MD Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, University of Connecticut Health Center. Farmington. CT The rapid transfer of new knowledge concerning the pathogenesis, diagnosis, preven tion, and treatment of disease into clinical practice has always been a major challenge in medicine. This challenge is particularly difficult to meet in osteoporosis, not only because has been so much new knowledge generated in recent years, but also because this there disorder has not caught the attention of many practicing physicians. The goal of this volume is to help primary care physicians develop a better understanding of osteoporosis and a more effective approach to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. As primary care physicians become more and more responsible for the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease, osteoporosis must become one of their important concerns. The magnitude of the problem of osteoporosis has been widely publicized. Within the next 30 years, the cost of hip fractures alone is expected to exceed $40 billion a year in the United States and will be a major cause ofincreased mortality. In addition, vertebral crush fractures will cripple more and more of our elderly population, both men and women. This enormous toll is not inevitable. Current methods of identifying individuals at risk and applying preventive programs could reduce the incidence offractures by 50% or more. This should be the minimum goal of clinicians."

Peter Teller; Translated by B. Herwig; Hermann Koenig, Ulrich Weber, Peter Hertel
R3,082 Discovery Miles 30 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the technical advances made in MRI technology and the wider availability of MRI units, this diagnostic modality has by now - doubtedly gained a crucial role in joint imaging. The excellent detail recognition of MRI provides views of the various joint structures once only available through direct arthroscopic and surgical pro- dures. The acceptance, usefulness, and role of any diagnostic modality, however, critically relies on the experience, clinical expertise, and dedication of those who use it.With this in mind, a renowned int- disciplinary team of authors have brought together expert kno- edge from their respective fields in compiling this MRI atlas. Peter Teller and Hermann Konig are two highly experienced MRI radiologists with backgrounds in both clinical work and research. Ulrich Weber and Peter Hertel are two leading orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists in the fields of joint surgery/microsurgery and sports injuries. It is the vast radiologic experience in the interpretation of c- plex image information - an experience that takes into account the clinical requirements from the perspective of orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists - as well as the authors'didactic approach that make for the singular character of this book. Berlin, November 2001 Bernd Hamm, MD Professor and Chairman Department of Radiology Charite Medical School Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin Preface MRI of diseases and injuries of the head, neck, and spinal column has become firmly established as a diagnostic tool since examiners could easily apply their previous experience gained in CT to MRI in these areas."
