for SATB unaccompanied Pete Churchill's thrilling arrangement of this traditional Cornish carol has a gentle South African feel and features 'scat' singing and chromatic shifts in harmony. The traditional melody in 6/8 time is set against a jazz-waltz rhythm, giving a contemporary twist to this Christmas classic.

The lilting vocal lines are subtly underpinned by a delicate piano accompaniment, and the opening performance direction, 'contentedly rocking', describes the overall nature of the piece: peaceful, content, and easy-going.

This short anthem is optimistic and uplifting in tone, with frequently changing time-signatures that convey a rhythmic fluidity and the flexibility to follow the declamation of the words.
for SATB double choir unaccompanied Written for the Choir of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, The Presence sets lines from Psalms 18, 27, 36, 112, and 119. It was inspired by A. E. Borthwick's painting of the same title, which hangs in St Mary's, and the texts chosen are mainly concerned with light. The performance directions used - 'luminous', 'resonant', 'dark', 'ethereal' - express the setting's intense atmosphere and almost visual sense of space and lustre. While suitable for services and concerts throughout the year, The Presence is especially appropriate for performance during Advent.
for SATB and organ or piano This charming carol tells of the joy and wonder of the star of Bethlehem and features Chilcott's hallmark tuneful melodies and carefully chosen harmonic colours. Epiphany takes for its text a translation of two verses by French hymn-writer Charles Coffin, augmented by a newly written verse by Chilcott's long-time collaborator Charles Bennett. The result is a carol which is both narrative and reflective, with a perfect mix of traditional and modern.
for SATB and organ Francis Jackson's spirited setting of Psalm 150 is steeped in the English choral tradition. With contrapuntal writing, engaging interplay between choir and organ, effective word painting, and virtuosic organ writing, O praise God in his sanctuary is a welcome addition to the service repertory.
for SATB and organ or orchestra This is an arrangement of the 19th-century hymn by Philip Bliss, with words written by Horatio Spafford following several personal tragedies. Despite having lost his first son to scarlet fever, most of his assets in the Great Fire of Chicago, and then his four daughters in a shipwreck, Spafford's enduring faith inspired him to write this hymn, which speaks of an internal, spiritual calm in the face of life's difficulties. Wilberg's arrangement of Bliss's tune keeps the first two verses in unison, first women and then men, before allowing fuller textures to take over. The choir is accompanied throughout, and two upward major 3rd modulations lead to a triumphant close.
for SSATB and organ This atmospheric anthem by Cecilia McDowall commemorates the First World War. It sets a stark English text by Dr Joseph Spence alongside Latin text from Psalm 130, with the words 'In memoriam' added. The lower parts sing Spence's English text, conveying the relentless hardship of life in the trenches with declamatory and constantly developing vocal lines. The sopranos, meanwhile, repeat the Latin words from Psalm 130, providing a striking contrast in their constancy and otherworldliness.
for SATB unaccompanied This setting of a tune from The Sacred Harp is strong and march-like, with accented rhythms and percussive vocal lines contributing to a rousing overall effect. It was originally published as part of Mack Wilberg Anthems and is also available in a version for TTBB unaccompanied.
for SATB unaccompanied This high-energy, majestic setting of well-known words from the psalms is a welcome addition to the service repertory. The changing metre brings the text to the fore, and the semiquaver movement that passes between parts creates a sense of motion and drive that is fitting for this uplifting and joyous hymn of praise.
for SATB and organ Commissioned by The Maryland State Boychoir in 2017, this striking Christmas piece sets a famous text by Ben Jonson. Jackson's attractive and largely diatonic harmonies combine with vivid word-setting, deft manipulations of texture, and a colourful organ part to create a mood of gentle rapture, with a central section that explores more conflicted atmospheres. |
