Private prison .A private prison or for-profit prison, jail, or
detention center is a place in which individuals are physically
confined or interned by a third party that is contracted by a
government agency. Private prison companies typically enter into
contractual agreements with governments that commit prisoners and
then pay a per diem or monthly rate for each prisoner confined in
the facility. Today, the privatization of prisons refers both to
the takeover of existing public facilities by private operators and
to the building and operation of new and additional prisons by
for-profit prison companies. operate under 5 year contracts. Soon
private prisons were established under the government's Private
Finance Initiative, where contracts are awarded for the entire
design, construction, management and finance of a prison under 25
year contracts. Later, Government attempted to 'market test'
prisons operated by the public sector, though no prison transferred
from public to private operation through this route until
Birmingham in 2011. 2] Prisons operated by the private sector are
subject to re-competition at the end of the contract, when the
public sector may bid, and on 3 occasions has done so successfully.
Privately run prisons are run under contracts which set out the
standards that must be met.

This book is the sixth in a series of books written by Jake
Bussolini. It is the last in his series of books that blend the
science of fishing with the sport of fishing. This book is directed
at the experienced angler and covers a broad range of subjects that
the author feels he has not thoroughly covered in his previous
books. The first half of this book covers some of the more complex
questions about fish health, growth, population and nutrition. Then
the subject of Sonar image interpretations are re-visited, going
deep into the understanding of what screen images really mean. The
author also covers less complicated subjects like the strike zone,
using sound to catch fish, selecting the right bait or lure
including a look at the author's ten favorite lures. The second
half of the book describes several of the fishing experiences of
the author including lessons learned from these experiences. The
book ends with some brief coverage of filleting your fish, stepping
up your equipment and a broad description of the responsibilities
of every experienced angler.
Join Warren as he takes us to Alaska beyond the city lights. In the
Bering Sea aboard Japanese and Korean fishing boats he discovers
cultural differences that make a seemingly mundane job into a real
learning experience. When the Korean Captain asks him to repair an
officer's severed finger, he learns how different things can be.
Canoeing trips on wild rivers in interior Alaska give him a swim in
waters barely above freezing and the necessity to do everything
right the first time simply to preserve his life. An attacking bear
doesn't leave any room for errors. Groceries aren't always found on
shelves; in Alaska much of the table fare comes from the wild.
Warren takes us on hunting trips that rarely turn out as expected.
Warren shares life with us a few others live it.

to using the Global Positioning System in the outdoors using
mapping GPS receivers, digital topographic maps, and satellite
imagery. The book uses realistic scenarios and plenty of screen
shots and photos to show you how to find your way in the
backcountry quickly and easily. This book is for hunters, rescue
teams, hikers, mountain bikers, anglers, geocachers, backpackers,
cross-country skiers, snowshoers, boaters, and everyone who uses
recreational GPS in the outdoors. Using GPS, anyone, anywhere on
Earth, can find their position within a few feet using an
inexpensive hand-held GPS receiver. That simple ability has
completely revolutionized every field that uses positioning,
navigation, and timing information, including outdoor recreation.

precision regardless of weather, location, or time of day, you can
work with computers and the World Wide Web to plan your outdoor
adventures from home. You can record our trip in the field,
download it to a computer, attach labels, graphics, elevation
profiles, comments and photos, and then share it with friends or
publish it for all to see on the Internet. As a result there is a
rapidly growing amount of free trip and backcountry information on
the Web. This book shows you how to tap into this remarkable
capability to make your own outdoor adventures safer and more
enjoyable.
A 676 page quality reprint of the U.S. Army's Survival Guide. It
covers virtually all scenarios and the methods required to survive
them. A must read for military, and also civilians, who may find
themselves at-risk out in the elements in any part of the world.
Preface: As a soldier, you can be sent to any area of the world. It
may be in a temperate, tropical, arctic, or subarctic region. You
expect to have all your personal equipment and your unit members
with you wherever you go. However, there is no guarantee it will be
so. You could find yourself alone in a remote area- possibly enemy
territory-with little or no personal gear. This manual provides
information and describes basic techniques that will enable you to
survive and return alive should you find yourself in such a
situation. If you are a trainer, use this information as a base on
which to build survival training. You know the areas to which your
unit is likely to deploy, the means by which it will travel, and
the territory through which it will travel. Read what this manual
says about survival in those particular areas and find out all you
can about those areas. Read other books on survival. Develop a
survival-training program that will enable your unit members to
meet any survival situation they may face. It can make the
difference between life and death. The proponent of this

"The Bushcraft Handbooks" were first published in Australia in
1952. Based on the Author's wartime service in Australia and New
Guinea teaching "Junglecraft" to Australian and American forces,
they are distilled, concentrated old-time bushcraft knowledge,
presented in a very easy to assimilate format. For those who
remember them, the Bushcraft Handbooks are also a heavy hit of
nostalgia. Rather than publish all of the volumes under the one
cover, the Author originally chose to publish each aspect of
bushcraft in its own individual handbook. His rationale was that
the reader was more inclined to take a 50 page handbook with him
into the wilds than a 400 page book. The former can be easily
slipped into a pocket or daypack, while the latter cannot. The
Bushcraft Handbooks are useless unless the reader practices the
skills the books were designed to impart. The individual handbooks
format was chosen to support that end. Out of print for decades,
and in keeping with the Author's wishes, this series of Bushcraft
Handbooks are reproduced as close to their original format as
possible. The series comprises the following volumes: Bush
Ropemaking, Bush Hutmaking, Traps & Snares, Bush Campcraft,
Time & Direction, Travel & Gear, Food & Water in the
Bush, Firemaking & Lighting, Trapping & Tracks, Knots &
Lashings. From the introduction to "Firemaking & Lighting" "The
ability to obtain fire is essential in the bush. Fire can provide
warmth, comfort, and protection. It is essential for the
preparation of food, because heat in one form or another chemically
affects the cells of plant foods, making some yield their
nourishment, and others release their toxic elements. Fire enables
man to cook flesh and also to preserve it by smoking or drying.
Fire is essential to make polluted water safe and drinkable. The
ability to obtain fire under any conditions, provided that
combustible material is available, is one of the first essentials
in out-of-door living. The confidence which follows when one
masters the skill of lighting fire with no equipment is remarkable.
Making fire by friction and other means is not easy, but when the
skill has been mastered, the person acquiring the skill acquires
greater knowledge of himself and greater confidence in his ability
to overcome obstacles, both valuable characteristics in all avenues
of life. The ability to make fire under almost any condition is
essential to the bushman."

The benefits of foraging wild food are relatively well-known:
nutritious food, free for the taking, can be found far and wide.
But how can a community's needs be addressed, especially with no
teacher in sight? How does one guide the many? Renowned wild food
teacher Linda Runyon releases her methods in her new book, "Promote
Wild Food Certainty through Plant Identification Walks." By
grooming an orderly outdoor exhibit of wild edible food in a clear,
indexed sequence, Linda established a dozen different self-guided
wild food tours in formats both large and small. She used these
walks to seed interest in foraging and promote identification
certainty the easy way. Here, she shares her knowledge, hard-won
from trial and error, so ANYONE can achieve those educational
results with ease while avoiding the pitfalls. A HIDDEN BONUS:
Because Linda uses cultivation techniques to make her walks, she
covers wild food farming, too With a minimal effort, you too can
kick Mother Nature into overdrive and make a camouflaged
Supermarket appear right in your own back yard With the searching
and trekking gone and a harvest routine established, you can
produce food like crazy and put up a few winter's supply in no time
flat. Become part of the solution today and eliminate fear while
starvation-proofing your loved ones

"Many people associate survival with the ability to find food and
water. These of course are essential to sustain life. In all areas,
except the most arid, food and water in sufficient quantities are
available, but the fear in many people's minds is that the food
they find may be poisonous, or the water polluted. This handbook
establishes safe principles for recognising foods which are edible
and safe, and ways to overcome possible contamination of water, no
matter how badly it may appear polluted. The search for, and
recognition of edible foods sharpens and develops three of man's
senses, sight, taste and smell. On the use of these depends the
searcher's success in finding food and water."
"Around you in the bush are food and materials for shelter and the
wherewithal for many emergencies...". The first sentence in this
book gives a clue to the amazing collection of information on every
aspect of bushcraft which it contains. The opening section deals
with huts and shelters which can be made in the bush from bush
materials; it tells also how to make ropes and cords from bark,
fibres, and vines, and how to knot and lash ropes and cords. The
second section deals with traps and snares, It's amazing how many
ways there are to catch animals for food Then, there's information
on how to catch fish and other sea food without the usual lines and
nets. The third section tells how to find water; this is an art in
itself. There are secrets that enable aboriginals and experienced
bushmen to live in arid regions, where city-bred men would die. The
next section deals with the food that can be found in the bush.
There is a section dealing with the business of preparing food; how
to make fire places, how to light fires without matches; how to
make camp beds and tables. Can you make a canoe or a coracle in the
bush? This book tells you how. How about finding your direction and
telling the time without a compass or watch? All this fascinating
information is illustrated with detailed drawings. It is an
invaluable book for campers and hikers, bushmen, soldiers and
airmen, members of the Volunteer Defence Corps and Boy Scouts--All
who would like to know how "to live off Nature."
This is the most basic, easy to understand book of how to make a
fire that you will ever read. The many photographs and simple
instructions will teach you this skill as if you were 7 years old.
This book is being written for all of those people that have
trouble starting fires. Whether it is at a campfire or in a
fireplace, these methods will guide you step by step to having the
ability to start a fire every time. It is designed as a picture
book. Rather than teach you with just words, you will actually see
the steps necessary to build a successful fire. Included in this
book are lists of good tinder and how to find fuel, a trouble
shooting guide and suggestions to make starting a fire easy every
time. You will learn everything from how to light different kinds
of matches properly to seeing pictures of different tinders that
are easy to light to get your fire started. If you have had trouble
starting fires in the past, want to learn how to teach kids this
skill easily or are just looking for some pointers on fire making
then this is the book for you.
