The Bushcraft Handbooks - Traps & Snares (Paperback): Richard H Graves The Bushcraft Handbooks - Traps & Snares (Paperback)
Richard H Graves
R270 Discovery Miles 2 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Bushcraft Handbooks" were first published in Australia in 1952. Based on the Author's wartime service in Australia and New Guinea teaching "Junglecraft" to Australian and American forces, they are distilled, concentrated old-time bushcraft knowledge, presented in a very easy to assimilate format. For those who remember them, the Bushcraft Handbooks are also a heavy hit of nostalgia. Rather than publish all of the volumes under the one cover, the Author originally chose to publish each aspect of bushcraft in its own individual handbook. His rationale was that the reader was more inclined to take a 50 page handbook with him into the wilds than a 400 page book. The former can be easily slipped into a pocket or daypack, while the latter cannot. The Bushcraft Handbooks are useless unless the reader practices the skills the books were designed to impart. The individual handbooks format was chosen to support that end. Out of print for decades, and in keeping with the Author's wishes, this series of Bushcraft Handbooks are reproduced as close to their original format as possible. The series comprises the following volumes: Bush Ropemaking, Bush Hutmaking, Traps & Snares, Bush Campcraft, Time & Direction, Travel & Gear, Food & Water in the Bush, Firemaking & Lighting, Trapping & Tracks, Knots & Lashings. From the introduction to "Traps & Snares" "The ability to pick up a couple of dead sticks from the ground, and with a sharp knife and a little know-how produce a practical and workable release for a snare or trap is a valuable exercise in improvisation and inventiveness. As far as is known this the first time a collection of improvised releases and with this snares and traps has ever been published. Some of these are potential man-killers, developed by soldiers in jungle warfare to protect themselves. The knowledge of these possible man-killers must be treated with as much respect as a loaded firearm. They are included because they could be lifesavers for man stranded in hostile country."

From the introduction to "Knots & Lashings" "The ability to join two pieces of natural material together, and so increase their length, gives man the ability to make full use of many natural materials found locally. Sailors probably did more to develop order in the tying of knots, because for them it was necessary not only to tie securely but also to be able to untie, often in the dark and under conditions of bad weather and with rain-tightened ropes. In bushcraft work probably half a dozen knots would suffice, but knots and knotting have a fascination for many people the world over, and a comprehensive range of knots, plain and fancy, and, with these, splices, whipping, plaits, and net making are included in this book with information of general use. Knot tying is a useful exercise to obtain better coordination between eyes and fingers. The identification of knots by feel is an excellent means of developing recognition through touch. In all woodcraft work it is necessary to know how to tie knots which will hold securely and yet can be untied easily. Many of the materials which you will have to use will be green, some will be slippery with sap, and there are many little tricks and knacks to get the best possible use from the materials available."

From the introduction to "Bush Ropemaking" One of the first needs in Bushcraft is the ability to join poles or sticks. The only method available is by the use of lashings. To use lashings however, it is necessary to have, find or make, materials for this purpose. The ability to spin, or plait fibres into ropes or cords is one of the oldest of man's primitive skills. The method is simple, and follows precisely the same stages that are made use of by today's complicated machines. The material from which to spin or plait ropes or cords is in abundance everywhere. Any fibrous material which has reasonable length, moderate strength and is flexible or pliable can be used. These are the three things to look for, and they can be found in many vines, grasses, barks, palms, and even in the hair of animals.

From the introduction to "Bush Hutmaking" Little skill is needed to make a comfortable, thatched, weatherproof hut using only materials locally available. Such huts can be expected to have a useful service life of 4 to 6 years without maintenance. With maintenance, such as renewing lashings, and repairs to ridge thatch, the life is anything up to 20 years. Where rammed earth is used for walls, the life of the structure is indeterminate. Many earth wall buildings have stood undamaged for hundreds of years. The building of a thatched hut from local materials is a creative exercise. Design must provide for the anticipated weather conditions. Finding suitable materials almost anywhere presents no problem, but considerable organisation may be required to collect the material. For the actual structure and thatching, good teamwork is required. The final hut, with its promise of long periods of protection and shelter, is the result of combination of head work and hands. With this comes the inward reward of having created a weather-proof hut out of nothing except the natural materials garnered from the surrounding area.

In all areas, except the most arid, food and water in sufficient quantities are available, but the fear in many people's minds is that the food they find may be poisonous, or the water polluted. This handbook establishes safe principles for recognising foods which are edible and safe, and ways to overcome possible contamination of water, no matter how badly it may appear polluted. The search for, and recognition of edible foods sharpens and develops three of man's senses, sight, taste and smell. On the use of these depends the searcher's success in finding food and water."

Under some conditions the traveller may have been totally unprepared and on his ability to travel and arrive may depend his ultimate survival. In this book a little known or used ability of the eyes to stereoscope aerial or other pairs of photographs, and view the subject in true three dimensions, unaided by any optical equipment, has been included. Under some conditions this knowledge may be useful. Apart from this, the exercise itself is a valuable and exiting experience in the use of the eyes. There are many suggestions in this book that will provide real opportunities for adventure, which could be simply doing ordinary things differently. Travel and gear is of necessity directly associated with the Handbook titled Time and Direction.

Lariats and Lassos - Bernard S. Mason's How to Spin a Rope (Paperback): Bernard S. Mason Lariats and Lassos - Bernard S. Mason's How to Spin a Rope (Paperback)
Bernard S. Mason
R178 Discovery Miles 1 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

No self-respecting cowboy would refer to a lasso. A rope was a rope. Roping was the activity and rope was the instrument. However, the magic that could be worked fascinated Americans, and the Wild West Show for a time rivaled the circus as exciting entertainment in the nineteenth century. Fascinated, youngsters practiced at being Wild Bill Hickoks. In a later era, Will Rogers entranced audiences with his rope tricks accompanying his famous monologues. This short introduction to the basics of the lasso was almost a bible to generations of backyard enthusiasts. Certainly it is a reminder of a time when having fun did not require a flat screen.

The Bush Boy's Book - Heritage Edition (Paperback): Donald MacDonald The Bush Boy's Book - Heritage Edition (Paperback)
Donald MacDonald
R554 Discovery Miles 5 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Uniquely Australian, and the first Australian bushcraft book to be published and gain a wide readership, The Bush Boy's Book was published in 1911 and was considered compulsory bushcraft reading until at least the 1940s for all bushmen, scouts, cadets, army recruits, farmer's sons and early outdoor enthusiasts of all types. This was the book our grandfathers and great grandfathers ravenously pored over by gas, kerosene or candle light, committing every little hint and tip to memory. Today, over 100 years after it was first published, this fine book has been all but forgotten. It's time to bring it to a new generation of bushcrafters, scouts and outdoor recreation devotees. In October 1911, the Perth Western Mail's Literary Editor had this to say about the book: "The Bush Boy's Book, by Donald MacDonald, comprises 260 pages of excellently printed matter, which should prove invaluable to anyone, boy or man, who enjoys or wishes to know anything about life in the open. For Boy Scouts it will furnish a gold mine of information. The author has the trick of making his descriptions perfectly comprehensible. He would seem to have left nothing out - beds and bivouacs, camps, codes, camp cookery, fishing, game, guns, bushcraft, shooting, swimming, bush surgery, snakes, 'things worth knowing', traps and snares, tips and instruction on all manner of things that concern bushmen; how to extricate oneself when lost, how not to get lost at all, how to be happy though bushed, to make beds, meals and shelters, etc., etc. It is written for Australians, by Australians from an Australian point of view, and the letterpress is supplemented by diagrams that leave nothing to be misunderstood. Both the author and the publisher are to be congratulated on a praiseworthy work."

Bushcraft - How to Live in Jungle and Bush (Paperback): Wontolla Bushcraft - How to Live in Jungle and Bush (Paperback)
Wontolla
R429 Discovery Miles 4 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Around you in the bush are food and materials for shelter and the wherewithal for many emergencies...". The first sentence in this book gives a clue to the amazing collection of information on every aspect of bushcraft which it contains. The opening section deals with huts and shelters which can be made in the bush from bush materials; it tells also how to make ropes and cords from bark, fibres, and vines, and how to knot and lash ropes and cords. The second section deals with traps and snares, It's amazing how many ways there are to catch animals for food Then, there's information on how to catch fish and other sea food without the usual lines and nets. The third section tells how to find water; this is an art in itself. There are secrets that enable aboriginals and experienced bushmen to live in arid regions, where city-bred men would die. The next section deals with the food that can be found in the bush. There is a section dealing with the business of preparing food; how to make fire places, how to light fires without matches; how to make camp beds and tables. Can you make a canoe or a coracle in the bush? This book tells you how. How about finding your direction and telling the time without a compass or watch? All this fascinating information is illustrated with detailed drawings. It is an invaluable book for campers and hikers, bushmen, soldiers and airmen, members of the Volunteer Defence Corps and Boy Scouts--All who would like to know how "to live off Nature."

From the introduction to "Bush Campcraft: "With the only tool a machete or a sharp knife, it is practical and easy to set up a camp in comfort. Everything one needs for bed, table, seats and chairs, cooking, and even lighting is usually available in the area immediately around the camp. A small amount of knowledge is needed and some of this is given in this handbook. Campcraft, like all the other skills in bushcraft develops the powers of observation to a remarkable degree, and with this the ability to adapt or improvise. It is applicable by all who camp, regardless of whether the camping is a once-a-year venture with a car and auto tent, or a weekend adventure with a pack on one's back. There need be no discomfort for anyone in camping if they have knowledge of how to set up a camp in comfort. A properly made camp bed can be as restful as a sprung mattress, and no food is more flavoursome than when cooked in the out-of-doors. If the camper does not know how to camp in comfort there will be times during heavy rain when wood appears too wet to take fire, or when the wind is so high that the heat of the fire is blown under and away from the water in the billy the camper is trying to boil, or when ants or bush rats find the food supply. This book shows many things you can do to make your camping more comfortable, and considerably safer."

Back Road Daydreams - Reflections on the Great Outdoors (Paperback): Niels Sparre Nokkentved Back Road Daydreams - Reflections on the Great Outdoors (Paperback)
Niels Sparre Nokkentved
R428 Discovery Miles 4 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is no substitute for time spent outdoors-even if it's a simple walk in the woods. For many years Niels S. Nokkentved has written about natural resources and environmental issues as a reporter, columnist and author in the Pacific Northwest. His writing took him deep into the deserts and mountains. He paddled lakes and rivers and camped and hiked in Washington's Cascade Mountains and Olympic Peninsula and in central Idaho's Sawtooth and the Boulder-White Cloud mountains. Nokkentved's writing about the Northwest shows a deep reverence for nature and a keen sense of place. His intention in assembling this book is to entice people to get outdoors by sharing his own adventures and the adventures of others he has met along the way. He shows readers that outdoor adventures don't require special equipment-other than good rain gear perhaps-or extensive expeditions to exotic places. While those sorts of thing definitely qualify, satisfying and worthwhile adventures can be had right outside the back door. Most of his adventures began within a half-hour of his home. Some others took a little longer. But the most important thing he learned was to just get outside-a simple walk along a stream or a farmer's field. He learned that if he had his eyes and ears open, adventure was sure to find him. And adventure is always its own reward, for as the late Justice William O. Douglas said, "the richness of life is found in adventure."

The Bushman's Handbook (Paperback): H.A. Lindsay The Bushman's Handbook (Paperback)
H.A. Lindsay
R658 Discovery Miles 6 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Here's what the Literary Editor of Adelaide's Advertiser newspaper had to say about "The Bushman's Handbook" in late 1948: "If an ordinary city dweller were to be dumped down in the arid central regions of Australia it is fairly certain that if the season was cold he would perhaps survive a few days, but it's also certain that in the heat of summer he would be dead within 48 hours. But the aborigine would be quite at home in such circumstances, which would not be dire straits to him at all. He would know how to find water where apparently none existed, and would unearth sufficient food to enable him to travel safely to better country. The author of "The Bushman's Handbook," who is an expert bushman and descendant of bushmen, and who instructed thousands of Australian and American troops in bushcraft during WWII, here tells exactly how to survive in inhospitable terrain. As to your thirst, he describes how moisture may be obtained from the stems of plants and the limbs of trees - and he shows by illustrations just how the parched outback traveler should proceed. Food can be obtained from all sorts of unlikely sources - for instance, the bilious-looking but tasty and nutritious "witjuti" grubs can be gouged out from the bark of trees. For larger foods the reader is carefully instructed how to make simple but effective snares - to the undoing of rabbits, hares, squirrels and similar game. If you are near streams or pools you have no need to hunger if you follow the Author's instructions and diagrams which will enable you to catch the various kinds of fish without rod, reel or hook. There are also interesting and instructive talks about fire lighting (without matches); the art of camping out; direction finding if you happen to be lost; or how to cord and thatch a shelter for yourself; and on the various special plants and roots which it is safe to eat if driven to extremities. Lastly, the Author gives valuable advice on how to maintain health in the bush, and stresses the value of bushcraft, and the hardiness and self-reliance which it brings, in both peace and war. In all, an admirable and comprehensive bushman's text-book."

Short Term Survival Guide (Paperback): Kenneth D. Nunn Short Term Survival Guide (Paperback)
Kenneth D. Nunn
R174 Discovery Miles 1 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Regardless of what you may have heard short-term survival, we are talking two or three days up to ten days, is really quite simple. Don't get me wrong I am not trying to diminish the danger of a short-term survival situation. All I am saying is that unless you are injured or in a harsh environment survival is not going to be as difficult as you have probably been led to believe.

Our goal with "Short-Term Survival Guide" is to debunk some of the erroneous information that is out there concerning short-term survival. Many of the survival sights as well as many of the survival books would lead you to believe that if you become stranded or lost for whatever reason your life is in imminent peril. They lead you to believe that without food or water you will perish within hours, this is a completely false concept. This is a dangerous concept which leads to panic. Panic is greatest danger is a survival situation.

You don't have to go to a survival camp to learn how to survive. You don't need to learn to rub two sticks together to start a fire, or how to make a solar still in order to have water. We explain how you can prepare so with a few simple items you won't have rub sticks together, eat bugs or drink contaminated water.

The Airsoft Bible - Book of Tactics (Paperback): William S. Frisbee The Airsoft Bible - Book of Tactics (Paperback)
William S. Frisbee
R467 Discovery Miles 4 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is all about the firefight, the skills, the formations and methodology of intense short range simulated combat. This book covers the actions immediately before, during and after that close range clash of fire power. No plan survives contact intact so you should know what to do when you have to make a decision and give the orders or follow the orders given. When the rounds are flying there is no time to discuss possible options and responses. If you do it will be too late. This book covers a wide range of tactics, from US Marine, US Army, British and Soviet infantry doctrine from several different eras, focusing on how these methods can and are used in simulated combat.
