Am Rande des Third International Meeting on Boron Chemistry (IMEBORON 111, Munchen und Ettal 1976) wurde ich gelegentlich auf eine Veroffentlichung*) angesprochen, in der ich einige Jahre zuvor, in begrenztem Umfang, uber Anwendungen und Wirkungen von Borverbindungen aus pharmazeutisch-chemischer Sicht referiert hatte. Bei diesen Gesprachen wurde deutlich, dass eine Nachfrage nach einem Gesamtuberblick uber die interdisziplinar breit verstreuten und oft "versteckten" Publikationen uber experimentelle und praktische Anwendungen von Borverbindungen in Arznei mittelchemie, Medizin und den ubrigen Biowissenschaften besteht und dass eine umfassende Dar stellung dieses Aspekts der Bor-Chemie eine Lucke in der Ubersichtsliteratur fullen wurde. Die entscheidende Anregung gab schliesslich Prof. Dr. Kurt Niedenzu (University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA) als verantwortlicher wissenschaftlicher Koordinator der "Bor"-Erganzungsbande zum Gmelin Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie durch den Vorschlag, die seit Erscheinen jener Veroffentlichung erheblich angewachsene Literatursammlung doch einem grosseren Interessenten kreis zuganglich zu machen und ein geschlossenes Kapitel uber Borverbindungen unter biologisch medizinisch-pharmazeutisch-chemischen Gesichtspunkten fur einen der Bande abzufassen. Wahrend der Arbeit an diesem Kapitel stellte sich heraus, dass der geplante Umfang wiederum nur eine partielle Wiedergabe des vorliegenden Materials ermoglichen wurde. So kam es zur Ubereinkunft mit dem Gmelin-Institut (Frankfurt am Main), dem Thema eine eigene Monographie - unabhangig vom Gmelin Handbuch, aber als Erganzung zur gesamten Bor-Reihe - zu widmen. Dabei sollte in Erweiterung des ursprunglichen Konzepts die Toxikologie der Borverbindungen noch ausfuhrlicher mitberuck sichtigt werden."
