Perception and Imaging - Photography as a Way of Seeing (Paperback, 5th edition): Richard D. Zakia, John Suler Perception and Imaging - Photography as a Way of Seeing (Paperback, 5th edition)
Richard D. Zakia, John Suler
R1,736 Discovery Miles 17 360 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

When you look at an image, what do you see, think, and feel? How do you want your audience to react when they view your work? For over 30 years the late Richard Zakia helped photographers enrich their creative vision through his classic book, Perception and Imaging. Now he is joined by co-author John Suler who extensively studied and worked with images throughout his career as a clinical psychologist. Together they present their insights into the principles of perception, memory, color, time, space, shapes, illusion, subliminals, rhetoric, personality style, and photo critique. Unlike any other book, Perception and Imaging will give you an extensive understanding of how photography relates to art, design, advertising, psychology, and philosophy, as well as what makes photography unique among the image-making disciplines. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, this information will help you appreciate photography not simply as a mastering of technique and composition, but as a way of truly seeing, especially now in the digital age. - New sections about photo sharing in social media and online groups devoted to photography critique - Includes inspirational images from some of the world's most well-known photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, and Ansel Adams - A comprehensive discussion of the "decisive moment" photo, its vital ingredients, and why some consider it the essence of photography - New sections about body language in photographs, camera angles, aspect ratios, self portraits and selfies, and how memory and personality affect photography

Photographer's Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P510 (Paperback): Alexander S. White Photographer's Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P510 (Paperback)
Alexander S. White
R911 Discovery Miles 9 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, a complete guide to the operation and features of the Nikon Coolpix P510, is a follow-up to the author's earlier guides to advanced compact digital cameras, including the Coolpix P500, the predecessor to this model, and several cameras from other manufacturers, including, most recently, the Fujifilm X10 and the Canon PowerShot S100. The new book, like the earlier ones, explains all operations, features, menus, and controls of the camera in clear language, providing guidance to beginning and intermediate photographers not only about how to accomplish things with the camera, but when and why to use certain features. The book does not assume any specialized knowledge by the reader as it explains topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, and macro photography. The book also includes a detailed discussion of techniques for using the camera's phenomenal zoom lens, with a maximum focal length of 1000mm, to full advantage. The book's more than 200 photographs, almost all in full color, provide illustrations of the camera's controls and menus, and also include examples of the various types of photographs that can be taken using the many creative settings of the camera, including the Picture Control settings, which let the photographer alter the color processing of images; the special Scene and Effects shooting modes, with settings that are optimized for various subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and action shots; and the camera's particularly strong array of features for continuous shooting and interval shooting. In addition, the book goes beyond the realm of everyday photography, and provides introductions to more advanced topics such as infrared photography, street photography, and creating 3D (three-dimensional) images that can be viewed with conventional red and blue 3D glasses. The book also includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the Coolpix P510, which can record high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound, and which has special settings for recording short clips of high-speed video at rates up to 4 times normal speed. In three appendices, the book provides information about accessories available for the camera, sets forth a list of useful web sites and other resources for further information, and includes a section with helpful "quick tips" that give particular insights into how to take advantage of the camera's features in the most efficient ways possible.

The very first photographs of the nineteenth century were produced without the use of a camera. Today, having rediscovered camera-less techniques, a number of artists are using camera-less photography to create beautiful, startling images. Now available in an updated and fully revised edition, Shadow Catchers surveys the work of five leading practitioners - Pierre Cordier, Susan Derges, Adam Fuss, Garry Fabian Miller and Floris Neususs - who, by casting shadows on light-sensitive paper or by chemically manipulating its surface, capture the presence of objects, figures or glowing light. The resulting pictures are consistently powerful, often with surreal effects and symbolic content. This is the first book to gather together the work of these key contemporary artists, revealing the technical processes and creative practices involved in their art. In an age of mass-produced imagery, Shadow Catchers offers a fascinating insight into a world of handcrafted photographs that are at once visually striking and intellectually stimulating.

An honest and personal book about creating better portraits and becoming your best self. The most successful portraits take us well beyond the surface of how someone looks and show us the inner essence of who someone is. They reveal character, soul, and depth. They uncover hidden hopes and profound truths, revealing that authentic and deeply human light that shines within. And while technical expertise is undoubtedly important, it's not the light, camera, or pose that creates a great portrait. It's you, and it's the connection you create with the subject that makes all the difference. In Authentic Portraits, photographer Chris Orwig teaches you that the secret to creating meaningful portraits is simple: curiosity, empathy, kindness, and soul...plus a bit of technique. While Chris spends significant time on the fundamentals of "getting the shot"--working with natural light, nailing focus, dialing in the correct exposure, effectively posing and directing the subject, intentionally composing the frame--he also passionately discusses the need for personal development, creative collaboration, and connection with the subject. Because who you are directly and deeply affects what you create, and it is only through cultivating your own inner light that you will be able to bring it out in your subjects. Filled with instruction, insight, and inspiration, Authentic Portraits is an honest and personal book about creating better frames. It's also about becoming your best self. Take the journey, and you'll learn to find your vision and voice, bring intention to your photography and your life, embrace mystery, and understand the importance of gratitude and empathy. Along the way, you will teach the camera to see in a way that replicates how you feel, and you'll find you have all you need to create work of lasting significance. Photography, one of the most influential inventions of the nineteenth century, has been shaped by Canadian innovators. Among them are two Quebec men who have flown beneath the radar in studies of the history of photography: the Smeaton brothers. Out of the Studio documents the life, oeuvre, and achievement of Charles Smeaton and his younger brother, John. Launched by the opening of their "photographic gallery" in 1861, they developed a reputation in Quebec for images of contemporaneous people, places, and events taken in challenging outdoor settings. Smeaton pictures of the aftermath of the Great Fire of Quebec in 1866 helped bring an understanding of the disaster to an international audience; images featuring the gold mining industry were displayed at the Exposition universelle in Paris the following year. When Charles travelled to Europe in 1866, he accomplished a feat previously thought impossible, taking the first successful photographs in the Roman catacombs. John moved to Montreal in 1869, where he worked for newspapers and developed techniques for the direct transfer of photographs into print without the necessity of intermediary engravings. Out of the Studio is the first comprehensive biographical study detailing the innovation and imagination of the Smeaton brothers and their legacy of images across two continents.
