The perception of an inadequate body shape is a cause of concern to many people, and new techniques for altering body shape are increasingly being developed and offered to patients. Of these, the removal and transfer of fat is fast growing in importance and availability. This practical guide offers a comprehensive overview of this rapidly-evolving field, and thorough coverage of the implementation of fat removal techniques, both invasive and non-invasive, in a cosmetic practice. It begins with an overview of basic fat anatomy and physiology as an important introduction to this topic. The distinction between the physiology and treatment of cellulite and fat is also discussed. The next section of the book covers invasive treatments of fat such as traditional liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, fat transfer procedures and mesotherapy. The latter half of the book largely focuses on non-invasive treatments for fat, including radiofrequency, ultrasound, cooling and laser technologies for fat removal. Throughout, potential complications and pitfalls of the various treatments are discussed. Edited by Matthew Avram, with contributions from a group of clinical stars, this book will appeal to cosmetic dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aesthetic medical practitioners, and obstetricians/gynaecologists

Cosmetic surgery represents an extreme form of modern grooming. It is the fastest growing medical specialty, yet misconceptions abound about those who undertake it and their reasons for doing so. With a grounded approach, engaging 30 women through in-depth interview, this study explores how they chose cosmetic surgery as an option. Their accounts frame a theoretical discussion, in which Northrop proposes that cosmetic surgery is initiated within the vulnerable and divisive relationship between the self and its poor body image. Poor body image and the attempt at its reparation are examined conceptually through shame and narcissism. With compelling case studies and a multi-disciplinary approach, Reflecting on Cosmetic Surgery demonstrates that shame constitutes a framework through which we formulate appearance norms and learn the art of becoming socially embodied. Shame concerns the self, but manifests in response to perceived social phenomena. Through the evaluation and amendment of body image with cosmetic surgery, notions of self and social worthiness are played out. Northrop argues convincingly for a review of the way in which we view narcissism and proposes that shame, and the discomforts arising from it, are implicated in its occurrence. This book will appeal to students and scholars across the social sciences, and particularly in women's studies and gender studies.

Filler techniques are the most widely used surgical procedures in cosmetic surgery, as they are the best method of reducing wrinkles on a long-term basis. For years, dermatologists have known that water-binding soft-tissue fillers can replace the loss of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid from the skin. Because filler formulas and application techniques are constantly updated and reevaluated, the dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon need a quick reference on the subject. This new text, edited by world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Neil S. Sadick, covers all the main aspects of soft-tissue filler techniques. Subjects covered include choosing and applying fillers; short-, intermediate-, and long-acting fillers; and combination approaches, as well as anesthetic considerations, equipment and patient positioning, operative procedures, potential complications, and postoperative evaluation.
The ease of accessibility, improvements in safety and technology,
media attention, growing acceptance by the public, or an
increasingly superficial culture: whatever the reason, cosmetic
surgery is more popular today than ever. In 2005, in the United
States alone, there were nearly two million aesthetic
operations-more than quadruple the number from 1984, along with
more than eight million non-surgical procedures. Innovative
surgical methods have also brought cosmetic improvements to new
areas of the body, such as the ribs, buttocks, and genitalia.
This volume examines one health issue -- breast implants -- across
a series of contexts often thought to be separate -- media
coverage, doctor-patient interaction, doctor-doctor professional
communication, support group dialogues, public relations campaigns,
and more. In so doing, it provides a narrative of how communication
shapes the individual perceptions of health, government, and social
policy concerning health care.

This reference volume conveys complete understanding and management of Androgenetic Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss (AGA/FPHL). These are probably the most common adult (18-50 yrs.) health disorders besides dental caries, accounting for over 98% of hair loss cases in males and over 70% cases in females. The present volume, the first of three related volumes, is structured in 4 sections: 22 dedicated chapters, ranging from basic science (Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology), the etiology of adult, childhood & adolescent AGA/FPHL, diagnostic steps and evaluation, to related disorders and comorbidities. For the first time in the scientific literature, all pathogenic contributors of AGA/FPHL, including micro-inflammation, scalp vascularization, biochemical stress, aging, solar radiation, and the sebaceous gland, are examined in comprehensive, dedicated chapters. The effects of every hormone on AGA/FPHL, as well as the psychological impact of the condition, are explored in depth. An extensive chapter on childhood and adolescent AGA/FPHL, a more common than previously thought condition, is another unique feature. Finally, two extremely detailed sections are included on the pathogenic links of AGA/FPHL to life-threatening comorbidities: cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, insulin resistance, and prostatic disorders, with suggested guidelines on how to save lives of balding patients by adopting early screening strategies. Each racial and ethnic population has their own nasal characteristics, which need to be considered when planning rhinoplasty surgery. This book is probably the first of its kind in the Indian context highlighting the goal of maintaining ethnic identity congruent with the patient's facial features and establishing Indian standards for gauging the success of the surgery. This is important as most of the rhinoplasty books have addressed these issues of the Caucasian or southeast Asian population and Caucasian normative standards of facial analysis. This book provides a broader understanding of ethnically specific features. It highlights the regional variations within India and their implications for rhinoplasty Surgery, thereby filling the void of lack of knowledge of the intricacies of surgery on Indian noses. It deals with important topics such as preoperative evaluations, determining factors such as thickness and texture of skin along with the various complications that may be encountered. It simplifies and facilitates learning with numerous pre-operative, intra-operative, and postoperative photographs. This book provides a systematic approach to Rhinoplasty surgery in Indian patients with an emphasis on addressing the functional aspects along with the cosmetic aspects. This book is a must-have for trainees in rhinoplasty and plastic surgery courses along with facial plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and aesthetic surgeons operating on the Indian population across the globe.
This book aims to introduce the most recent microsurgical techniques and applications in the pattern of illustrative case presentations, including digit replantation, toe-to-hand transplantation, peripheral nerve injuries especially total brachial plexus avulsion injury, surgical flaps. Microsurgery appeared to be a great procedure suitable for more applications. Anatomic research of the blood supply of skin, fascia, nerve, muscle, and bone identified flaps could be carried by pedicle vessels. Transfer of these flaps and revascularization by micro-vascular anastomoses of the arteries and veins set the stages for free flaps. In free flap surgery, single-stage and complex reconstructions could be achieved, which then lead to earlier mobilization and better restoration of function with a shorter hospital stay. Today, microsurgical technique is fully matured, and micro-vascular free tissue transfer is an essential part of reconstructive surgery. Development of microsurgery in China is introduced in the initiation of the current book. Key technical points and experience of replantation, reconstruction, tissue repair, nerve repair and reconstruction, oncological repair and reconstruction cases together with other applications of microsurgery are further demonstrated.
