The thorax has a fundamental role in the aesthetic of the male body: congenital or acquired alterations are experienced as extremely frustrating clinical situations. Most breast surgery texts briefly mention gynecomastia, but no text comprehensively addresses the male breast and thorax, including reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and surgery in transgender patients. This gap is now thoroughly filled by Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery of the Male Breast: after introducing principles of anatomy and aesthetics for the male thorax, the first part focusses on the main congenital malformations and their treatment; the main benign acquired pathologies and their treatment (including an ample section dedicated to gynecomastia), the carcinoma of the male breast, with reference to familiar forms; the treatment of carcinoma and reconstruction of the thorax. The book closes with a chapter dedicated to breast surgery in transgender patients. While female breast surgery is increasingly practiced in specific Breast Units and highly specialized centers, male breast issues are treated in general and plastic surgeries units. This handy volume is a sound reference for the most complex clinical cases, and the latest reconstruction treatments for the male thorax and will be useful for general and thoracic surgeons, plastic surgeons and senologists.
BOOK COMES WITH A DVD CONTAINING SURGICAL VIDEOS. Click here to view a sample video on YouTube. The goal of this book is to highlight areas from the broad spectrum of rhinology, beginning with the initial history and physical examination through the diagnostic work up, medical and surgical management and identification of potential pitfalls that may arise in order to minimize treatment failures. The authors of these chapters represent a generation of dedicated rhinologists who build upon the contribution to the field by pioneers in rhinology. They have provided their expertise and insight into common mistakes in order to aid the reader in improving treatment outcomes for their patients. FROM THE PREFACE Since the 1990s, the subspecialty of rhinology has evolved faster than any other area within otolaryngology. Only in recent history, the primary pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis was be believed to be primarily a result of structural obstruction of the osteomeatal complex with subsequent bacterial infection. Treatment algorithms revolved around systemic antibiotics and medical failures were treated with removal of diseased mucosa using non-physiologic surgical approaches. We have now gained a better understanding of the heterogeneous nature of chronic rhinosinusitis and the complex interaction between local and systemic immunity, impaired mucociliary clearance and the potential role for a variety of external insults to include bacteria, fungi, and other noxious stimuli. While surgery still plays a major role in the treatment of inflammatory disease, it is now performed in a physiologic fashion and its role as an adjuvant to aid in the delivery of novel topical therapies is better appreciated. In parallel with technological advancements for use in inflammatory disorders, rhinologists pushed the envelope in the surgical treatment of neoplastic disorders of the skull base and paranasal sinuses. Minimally invasive approaches in collaboration with other specialities, notably ophthalmologists and neurosurgeons, have resulted in the nascent field of neurorhinology, which is still in its infancy and will undoubtedly continue to evolve. In spite of these tremendous advances in rhinology and greatly improved success, doctors are still faced with difficult patients and failures of standard approaches. If we do not learn from our failures, we are destined to repeat them. On its publication An Account of Two Successful Operations for Restoring a Lost Nose (1816) by Joseph Carpue, was the most important work on reconstructive surgery since Gasparo Tagliacozzi, the Sixteenth Century Italian surgeon. Carpue's work is considered to represent the beginnings of modern plastic surgery, the first time for almost 200 years that this type of surgery had been examined in such detail. The widespread religious condemnation of Tagliacozzi's work had meant that methods of plastic surgery ceased to be openly researched for many years. Carpue's account describes procedures on two British Army officers using 'Hindu' rhinoplasty, which included an introduction on the history of both 'Hindu' and 'Taliacotian' methods.

Divided into two parts, The Nose - Revision and Reconstruction first describes and discusses the principles and practice of these types of surgery. In the second part, 59 carefully selected cases are presented to the reader with the various surgical problems that can be expected. Revision cases are analyzed and demonstrated in a range of common and rare presentations in patients who had previous functional and aesthetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery for nasal defects or after trauma and tumor resections. This reference also addresses issues relating to psychosomatic problems, psychology, body dysmorphic disorder, patient selection and contraindications, the timing of revision surgery, and specific processes in wound healing. The concepts of septorhinoplasty in various stages of life are also discussed, as they deal with general principles that are essential in any rhinoplasty but are particularly important in revision surgery. The express goal of this book is to steer clear of current trends. Thus, it covers the gamut of closed, open, and endoscopic approaches and all graft and suture techniques, employing the full armamentarium of surgical techniques. The book also aims to improve the reader's skills in preoperative analysis and planning so that typical mistakes can be avoided and the best possible results are achieved the first time. Through the discourse of technological embodiment, scientific progress in medicine and technology have advanced to the point that the human body is no longer thought of as a fixed form void of fluidity and refashioning. Surgical body alterations, specifically the hymenoplasty procedure, are a means by which some women (re)instate the appearance of 'virginity.' Within a cultural framework of dominant and subservient groups, this phenomenon is constructed as a controversial practice that uses cosmetic surgery in order to circumvent potential 'honor-killings.' By understanding the unique interrelationships of doctors, patients, and publics, ensuing findings that emerge from this examination show that the hymenoplasty procedure is a discursive rhetorical function with far-reaching implications that are both empowering and disempowering for the patients who are having it done. This book is addressed to professionals within the medical community as well as rhetorical communication scholars and anthropologists who have special interests in the ethics and implications of cutting-edge and controversial medical practices.
