World Population - A Reference Handbook, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Geoffrey Gilbert World Population - A Reference Handbook, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Geoffrey Gilbert
R1,996 Discovery Miles 19 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Exhaustively updated, this second edition provides a current assessment of world population and the range of economic, social, and environmental issues it raises. What do we now know about the future capacity of the Earth to support humankind? How do experts approach the wide range of economic, demographic, and environmental issues affected by population rates? The publication of the first edition of World Population: A Reference Handbook offered the first accessible introduction to this vital field of study. Now ABC-CLIO presents a thoroughly updated new edition, incorporating a wealth of new research and data to explore population issues affecting countries all over the world. Readers will see how everything from plagues and famines, to disease control and contraception, to economic development and landmark judicial decisions have influenced population patterns. The work also features two new chapters; an updated timeline of key events relating to global population putting the issue into long-term perspective; and biographies of key individuals to put a human face on the study of population. Primary documents including "Warning to Humanity, November 18, 1992" from the Union of Concerned Scientists, which warns of the perils of continued population growth among the poorer nations and continued "overconsumption" by the richer ones A chronology of population "milestones," such as the 1968 publication by the Sierra Club of Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb, which built public awareness of the effects of rapid population increase

Urban Multiculturalism and Globalization in New York City - An Analysis of Diasporic Temporalities (Hardcover): M Laguerre Urban Multiculturalism and Globalization in New York City - An Analysis of Diasporic Temporalities (Hardcover)
M Laguerre
R1,535 Discovery Miles 15 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on American society as a transglobal nation and examines the temporal dimension of diasporic incorporation in New York City. It argues that immigrant neighborhoods are faced not only with issues of economic and political integration, but also are engaged in a sublime and relentless effort of harmonizing the cultural rhythms of their daily life with the hegemonic temporality of mainstream society. Although much energy has been spent in explaining the segregated or ghettoized space of ethnic communitiies, there is, in contrast, a dearth of data on the subalternization, genealogy, and inscription of minoritized temporalities in the structural and interactional organization of the multicultural American City.

Political Demography - How Population Changes Are Reshaping International Security and National Politics (Hardcover): Jack A.... Political Demography - How Population Changes Are Reshaping International Security and National Politics (Hardcover)
Jack A. Goldstone, Eric P. Kaufmann, Monica Duffy Toft
R3,796 R3,000 Discovery Miles 30 000 Save R796 (21%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The field of political demography - the politics of population change - is dramatically underrepresented in political science. At a time when demographic changes - aging in the rich world, youth bulges in the developing world, ethnic and religious shifts, migration, and urbanization - are waxing as never before, this neglect is especially glaring and starkly contrasts with the enormous interest coming from policymakers and the media.
"Ten years ago, demography] was hardly on the radar screen," remarks Richard Jackson and Neil Howe of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, two contributors to this volume. "Today," they continue, "it dominates almost any discussion of America's long-term fiscal, economic, or foreign-policy direction."
Demography is the most predictable of the social sciences: children born in the last five years will be the new workers, voters, soldiers, and potential insurgents of 2025 and the political elites of the 2050s. Whether in the West or the developing world, political scientists urgently need to understand the tectonics of demography in order to grasp the full context of today's political developments. This book begins to fill the gap from a global and historical perspective and with the hope that scholars and policymakers will take its insights on board to develop enlightened policies for our collective future.

Development, Governance and Gender in South Asia - Perspectives, Issues and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Anisur... Development, Governance and Gender in South Asia - Perspectives, Issues and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Anisur Rahman, Niharika Tiwari
R3,809 Discovery Miles 38 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to understand the trends and issues of development, governance, and dynamics of gender in the South Asian region. It familiarizes the reader with the quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of governance and development. Contributing authors pay close attention to the socio-political and economic developments in South Asia in their respective chapters. The book is divided into four parts. The first part analyzes the social and economic development of South Asia in the context of human development, state apparatus, and migration. The second part focuses on issues of good governance and human rights. Issues related to minorities and corporate governance are also discussed specifically. The third part deals with the role of media and literature in the development narratives of South Asia. The last part highlights the inter-linkages between gender narratives and development. It is a must-read for those interested in understanding the socio-economic fabrics, political dynamics, and trajectory of development in South Asia.

Economics of Immigration - The Impact of Immigration on the Australian Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): P.N. Junankar Economics of Immigration - The Impact of Immigration on the Australian Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
P.N. Junankar
R3,510 Discovery Miles 35 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Poverty, famines, wars, and ethnic conflicts lead to large movements of refugees. The papers in this book provide an analysis of the economics of immigration. Junankar discusses why people migrate, the likely destinations for migrants, and their employment in the destination countries. He studies the benefits to the migrant families in terms of higher wages and living standards, and also studies how immigrants fare in the Australian labour markets in terms of finding good jobs, and whether there is discrimination against them. Economics of Immigration analyses the macroeconomic impacts of immigration on the Australian economy and discusses why some groups favour immigration while other groups are against it. Junankar argues immigration has been beneficial for employment and growth; not only adding to labour supply but also to labour demand, hence leading to favourable outcomes. This collection of essays shows how immigration has helped the economic development of Australia, while also highlighting that the historical reasons for immigration lie in the colonisation of many countries in Asia and Africa.

Exclusion and Forced Migration in Central America - No More Walls (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Carlos Sandoval-Garcia Exclusion and Forced Migration in Central America - No More Walls (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Carlos Sandoval-Garcia
R1,957 Discovery Miles 19 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book marks a critical contribution to the intercultural dialogue about immigration. Each year, thousands of Central Americans leave their countries and walk across Mexico, seeking to reach the United States. The author explores the dispossession process that drives these migrants from their homes and argues that they are caught in a kind of trap: forced to emigrate, but impeded to immigrate. This trap is discussed empirically through the analysis of immigration policies implemented by the United States government and ethnographic fieldwork carried out in some of "albergues" (shelters).

Mobility, Labour Migration and Border Controls in Asia (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): A. Kaur, I. Metcalfe Mobility, Labour Migration and Border Controls in Asia (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
A. Kaur, I. Metcalfe
R2,948 Discovery Miles 29 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines international migration, security and border-management strategies in Asia, in the face of intensified transnational economic and social processes and the expanding governmental regime. It argues that state policy to migrants is increasingly shaped by, and responds to challenges such as border security, international agreements, and new norms of global governnace developed by NGOs and other international advocacy organizations. This volume will contribute to important debates about globalization, international migration and issues of cross-border movements, and inform debates on issues of security, governance and population movements in the Asia-Pacific region.

God's Eugenicist - Alexis Carrel and the Sociobiology of Decline (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Andres Horacio Reggiani God's Eugenicist - Alexis Carrel and the Sociobiology of Decline (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Andres Horacio Reggiani
R2,942 Discovery Miles 29 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The temptations of a new genetically informed eugenics and of a revived faith-based, world-wide political stance, this study of the interaction of science, religion, politics and the culture of celebrity in twentieth-century Europe and America offers a fascinating and important contribution to the history of this movement. The author looks at the career of French-born physician and Nobel Prize winner, Alexis Carrel (1873-1944), as a way of understanding the popularization of eugenics through religious faith, scientific expertise, cultural despair and right-wing politics in the 1930s and 1940s. Carrel was among the most prestigious experimental surgeons of his time who also held deeply illiberal views. In Man, the Unknown (1935), he endorsed fascism and called for the elimination of the unfit. The book became a huge international success, largely thanks to its promotion by Readers' Digest as well as by the author's friendship with Charles Lindbergh. In 1941, he went into the service of the French pro-German regime of Vichy, which appointed him to head an institution of eugenics research. His influence was remarkable, affecting radical Islamic groups as well Le Pen's Front National that celebrated him as the founder of ecology. It includes a foreword by Herman Lebovics.

Yuk-Wah Chan
R1,501 Discovery Miles 15 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Whither the Child? - Causes and Consequences of Low Fertility (Paperback, New): Eric P. Kaufmann, W. Bradford Wilcox Whither the Child? - Causes and Consequences of Low Fertility (Paperback, New)
Eric P. Kaufmann, W. Bradford Wilcox
R1,187 Discovery Miles 11 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Birth rates are falling and fertility rates are well below replacement levels. At the same time, the economic crisis has forced governments to scale back public spending, reduce child support, and raise the retirement age, causing immense social conflict. Taking a step outside the disciplinary comfort zone, Whither the Child? asks how demography affects individuals and society. What does it feel like to live in a low fertility world? What are the consequences? Is there even a problem - economically, culturally and morally? No other book confronts so many dimensions of the low fertility issue and none engage with the thorny issues of child psychology, parenting, family, and social policy that are tackled head-on here.

The Multisite Nation - Crossborder Organizations, Transfrontier Infrastructure, and Global Digital Public Sphere (Hardcover,... The Multisite Nation - Crossborder Organizations, Transfrontier Infrastructure, and Global Digital Public Sphere (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Michel S. Laguerre
R2,715 R1,893 Discovery Miles 18 930 Save R822 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explains the transformation of the nation into a cosmonation (or multisite nation) through the reunification of the homeland with its diaspora. The book elaborates on how the mechanisms of linkages, connections, and networking interact to form distributed sites of homeland and diaspora into a cosmonation and how diasporans in different units of such a crossborder social formation, wherever they relocate, relate to each other. The ensemble thereby functions as a cultural and political collectivity manifested through cultural traditions, inter-site familial, institutional, and associational ties, transnational solidarity, and reverence for the ancestral homeland.

Population and Development - A Message from The Cairo Conference (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Robert L. Cliquet, Kristiaan Thienpont Population and Development - A Message from The Cairo Conference (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Robert L. Cliquet, Kristiaan Thienpont
R4,510 Discovery Miles 45 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the onset of modernisation the world population has doubled several times and will soon reach 6 billion of people. The annual rate of increase in the world population is approximately 90 million people. This is the largest absolute level of population growth ever recorded. According to the most recent population projections of the United Nations, the world population will probably double again before stabilising at a stationary level. Ninety percent of the present and future population growth is accounted for by developing countries. The fast increase in the size of the population in many developing countries is a serious obstacle to their attempts to overcome their backwardness, make a substantial improvement to their quality of life, and achieve a sustainable way of exploiting their renewable and non-renewable resources. At the same time, non-sustainable consumption and production patterns in the industrial countries and among wealthy citizens in developing countries, place additional burdens on the planet's natural resources and ecosystems. With a view of considering these problems and elaborating policy guidelines, the United Nations staged its International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt, September 5-13, 1994. This monograph deals with the background to the ICPD, its preparation, proceedings, and contents. It also evaluates its results and recommendations by comparing the ICPD Action Programme with the current scientific literature. The ICPD dealt with the key issues concerning the interrelations between population, development and environment, and their causes, and was not limited to marginal issues such as abortion, promiscuity and homosexuality as was the impression given in the media as a result of the way these questions were distorted by the action of religious fundamentalists. The ICPD Action Programme forms an impressive charter with a broad range of relevant policy recommendations. Nevertheless, compared to most of the current scientific literature, the ICPD seems to underestimate the seriousness and urgency of the issues at stake.

The Vanishing American Jew - In Search of Jewish Identity for the Next Century (Hardcover, 1st ed): Alan Dershowitz The Vanishing American Jew - In Search of Jewish Identity for the Next Century (Hardcover, 1st ed)
Alan Dershowitz
R1,191 Discovery Miles 11 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this urgent book, Alan M. Dershowitz shows why American Jews are in danger of disappearing - and what must be done now to create a renewed sense of Jewish identity for the next century. In previous times, the threats to Jewish survival were external - the virulent consequences of anti-Semitism. Now, however, in late-twentieth-century America, the danger has shifted. Jews today are more secure, more accepted, more assimilated, and more successful than ever before. They've dived into the melting pot - and they've achieved the American Dream. And that, according to Dershowitz, is precisely the problem. More than 50 percent of Jews will marry non-Jews, and their children will most often be raised as non-Jews. Which means, in the view of Dershowitz, that American Jews will vanish as a distinct cultural group sometime in the next century - unless they act now. Speaking to concerned Jews everywhere, Dershowitz calls for a new Jewish identity that focuses on the positive - the 3,500-year-old legacy of Jewish culture, values, and traditions. Dershowitz shows how this new Jewish identity can compete in America's open environment of opportunity and choice - and offers concrete proposals on how to instill it in the younger generation.

Asylum Matters - On the Front Line of Administrative Decision-Making (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Laura Affolter Asylum Matters - On the Front Line of Administrative Decision-Making (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Laura Affolter
R1,612 Discovery Miles 16 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book examines everyday practices in an asylum administration. Asylum decisions are often criticised as being 'subjective' or 'arbitrary'. Asylum Matters turns this claim on its head. Through the ethnographic study of asylum decision-making in the Swiss Secretariat for Migration, the book shows how regularities in administrative practice and 'socialised subjectivity' are produced. It argues that asylum caseworkers acquire an institutional habitus through their socialisation on the job, making them 'carriers' of routine practices. The different chapters of the book deal with what it means to methodologically study administrative practice: with how asylum proceedings work in Switzerland and with the role different types of knowledge play in overcoming the uncertainties inherent in refugee status and credibility determination. It sheds light on organisational socialisation processes and on the professional norms and values at the heart of administrative work. By doing so, it shows how disbelief becomes normalised in the office. This book speaks to legal scholars, sociologists, anthropologists, human geographers and political scientists interested in bureaucracy, asylum law, migration studies and socio-legal studies, and to NGOs working in the field of asylum.

Centering the Margin - Agency and Narrative in Southeast Asian Borderlands (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Alexander Horstmann,... Centering the Margin - Agency and Narrative in Southeast Asian Borderlands (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Alexander Horstmann, Reed L. Wadley
R2,936 Discovery Miles 29 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a completely new approach to borders and border crossing, this volume suggests a re-conceptualization of the nation in Southeast Asia. Choosing an actor approach, the individual chapters in this volume capture the narratives of minorities, migrants and refugees who inhabit and cross borders as part of their everyday life. They show that people are not only constrained by borders; the crossing of borders also opens up new options of agency. Making active use of these, border-crossing actors construct their own live projects on the border in multiple ways against the original intention of the nation-state. Based on their intimate knowledge of the interaction of communities, anthropologists from Europe, the USA, Japan and Southeast Asia provide a vivid picture of the effects of state policies at the borders on these communities.

The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (Hardcover): Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, Gil Loescher, Katy Long, Nando... The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (Hardcover)
Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, Gil Loescher, Katy Long, Nando Sigona
R4,715 Discovery Miles 47 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Refugee and Forced Migration Studies has grown from being a concern of a relatively small number of scholars and policy researchers in the 1980s to a global field of interest with thousands of students worldwide studying displacement either from traditional disciplinary perspectives or as a core component of newer programmes across the Humanities and Social and Political Sciences. Today the field encompasses both rigorous academic research which may or may not ultimately inform policy and practice, as well as action-research focused on advocating in favour of refugees' needs and rights. This authoritative Handbook critically evaluates the birth and development of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, and analyses the key contemporary and future challenges faced by academics and practitioners working with and for forcibly displaced populations around the world. The 52 state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading academics, practitioners, and policymakers working in universities, research centres, think tanks, NGOs and international organizations, provide a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the key intellectual, political, social and institutional challenges arising from mass displacement in the world today. The chapters vividly illustrate the vibrant and engaging debates that characterize this rapidly expanding field of research and practice.

Intersections of Tourism, Migration, and Exile (Paperback): Natalia Bloch, Kathleen Adams Intersections of Tourism, Migration, and Exile (Paperback)
Natalia Bloch, Kathleen Adams
R1,138 Discovery Miles 11 380 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book challenges the classic - and often tacit - compartmentalization of tourism, migration, and refugee studies by exploring the intersections of these forms of spatial mobility: each prompts distinctive images and moral reactions, yet they often intertwine, overlap, and influence one another. Tourism, migration, and exile evoke widely varying policies, diverse popular reactions, and contrasting imagery. What are the ramifications of these siloed conceptions for people on the move? To what extent do gender, class, ethnic, and racial global inequalities shape moral discourses surrounding people's movements? This book presents 12 predominantly ethnographic case studies from around the world, and a pandemic-focused conclusion, that address these issues. In recounting and juxtaposing stories of refugees' and migrants' returns, marriage migrants, voluntourists, migrant retirees, migrant tourism workers and entrepreneurs, mobile investors and professionals, and refugees pursuing educational mobility, this book cultivates more nuanced insights into intersecting forms of mobility. Ultimately, this work promises to foster not only empathy but also greater resolve for forging trails toward mobility justice. This accessibly written volume will be essential to scholars and students in critical migration, tourism, and refugee studies, including anthropologists, sociologists, human geographers, and researchers in political science and cultural studies. The book will also be of interest to non-academic professionals and general readers interested in contemporary mobilities.
