For more than a century, Rolex has stood apart as the most legendary brand of watch in the world. A Rolex conveys many things: a luxury timepiece, a tool of power for movers and shakers and the symbol of passage into adulthood.

The Vintage Watch Company is the only store of its kind in the world, with a devoted client base of devoted Rolex aficionados, from royalty to sporting legends to stars of the silver screen. Throughout, father and son, John and David Silver have been carefully cataloguing and amassing one of the largest pictorial records of vintage Rolex watches in the world. This new and updated edition, with an extra 48 sumptuous pages of fabulous pieces, is published to celebrate the company's 30th anniversary in 2025 and contains a unique collection of vintage Rolex watches that have passed through the store in this time. The watches included take the collection up to the year 2006. Ever the record setter – the Daytona that had belonged to Paul Newman was auctioned by Phillips in New York in October 2017 for $17.8 million – it comes as no surprise that Rolex is the most collected watch brand in the world.

Over 2,000 watches feature in the book. From early Rolex pocket watches to the world’s first wristwatches, elegant in their simplicity yet revolutionary in their impact, to the very first Submariners, iconic Daytonas and jewel-encrusted Crown Collections, the mesmerising archive of vintage timepieces charts the extraordinary rise of an extraordinary brand. Choose from the First Rolex Submariner, later coined the James Bond, or the Early GMT-Master made for Pan Am transatlantic pilots. Read about the First Explorers made famous by the 1953 Everest Expedition, or the Explorer II worn by Steve McQueen. Marvel at Early Vintage collections, from the Officer’s Pocket Watch to the Ladies’ Diamond; from the Oyster and the Stella & Stone collections, to the Sport Collection. Take a look at a new section covering ‘tropical’ dials, watches with dials which have faded gradually through exposure to sun and hot climates, which are highly sought-after; and a new section covering the relationship between Rolex and the luxury jewellery brand Tiffany, one of the most famous co-branding partnerships in history.

This limited edition features the rare Stella colour dial in Lilac on the cover – there are two other limited edition colourways, making three limited editions to celebrate each of the three decades the company has been in business – these books are an essential addition to the watch aficionado’s library.

This book is a perfect gift for all lovers of luxury retail as well as passionate collectors of Rolex watches who will want to read about the models they own.

Salt Bones (Paperback): Jennifer Givhan Salt Bones (Paperback)
Jennifer Givhan
R362 Discovery Miles 3 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this gripping retelling of Persephone and Demeter in the Mexicali borderlands, three Mexican-American women from a haunted family must find the truth about the missing girls from their small Southern California farming community before the danger can find them first.

At the edge of the Salton Sea, in the blistering borderlands, something is out hunting.

Malamar Veracruz has never left the dust-choked town of El Valle. Here, Mal has done her best to build a good life: She’s raised two children, worked hard, and tried to forget the painful, unexplained disappearance of her sister, Elena. When another local girl goes missing, Mal plunges into a fresh yet familiar nightmare. As a desperate Mal hunts for answers, her search becomes increasingly tangled with inscrutable visions of a horse-headed woman, a local legend who Mal feels compelled to follow. Mal’s perspective is joined by the voices of her two daughters, all three of whom must work to uncover the truth about the missing girls in their community before it’s too late.

Combining elements of Latina and Indigenous culture, family drama, mystery, horror, and magical realism in a spellbinding mix, Salt Bones lays bare the realities of environmental catastrophe, family secrets, and the unrelenting bond between mothers and daughters.

The Drowned Places - Diving In Search Of Atlantis (Paperback): Damian Le Bas The Drowned Places - Diving In Search Of Atlantis (Paperback)
Damian Le Bas
R440 R393 Discovery Miles 3 930 Save R47 (11%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Entranced by history and myth, captivated by the wonders of nature, Damian Le Bas explores the meaning we find in sunken ruins around the world.

Thousands of years ago, an island off the Straits of Gibraltar went to war with ancient Athens. The battle was lost, and an earthquake cleaved the land in two. Overnight the island sank beneath the waves – or so legend tells.

As a young boy, Damian Le Bas was captivated by the story of the lost city of Atlantis. As an adult, he dreams of diving to discover its ruins. After the death of his father, torn between his lifelong desire and the taboo his Romany culture places on the ocean, he comes by chance across a dive shop. He can’t help but go in.

Under the waves, Damian enters a breathtaking world. As he masters the skills of this exhilarating sport, diving with seals in the Farne Islands, exploring submerged Roman ruins in Naples and mapping the sunken city of Port Royal in Jamaica, he is entranced anew, by wonders both man-made and natural.

Plato's writings on Atlantis were a parable about the hubris of humankind; in witnessing our effects on oceans and ocean communities, Damian finds echoes of this in the modern world.

A spellbinding love letter to diving, The Drowned Places is also a profound examination of the power that myth has over us, and what happens when it crosses over into reality.

Raising Brows - My Story of Building a Billion Dollar Beauty Empire (Paperback): Anastasia Soare Raising Brows - My Story of Building a Billion Dollar Beauty Empire (Paperback)
Anastasia Soare
R425 R349 Discovery Miles 3 490 Save R76 (18%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

An esthetician and single mother with no connections, Anastasia Soare risked her life escaping communist Romania to come to America. Raising Brows tells the remarkable story of how she built a billion-dollar beauty brand and went from watching Oprah's TV show to learn English, to shaping Oprah's eyebrows on the very same show years later.

Anastasia disrupted the beauty industry by applying her art school training on the 'golden ratio' of beauty to eyebrows. Helping women find harmony with their face, Anastasia put eyebrows on the map. She pioneered new makeup products and built a glittering roster of clients like Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, and Cindy Crawford. But beneath the glossy exterior, Anastasia's path wasn't easy.

In this powerful memoir, she shares her extraordinary journey, putting her Romanian values of hard work, persistence, and optimism to the test in Los Angeles, ignoring the landlords and bank managers who laughed w hen she tried to open a salon focusing on eyebrows.

Anastasia's story serves as a powerful reminder that you can do anything you put your mind to so long as you are passionate and determined. As she says, 'it's the love and effort we put into our pursuits and relationships that truly define our success.'

The Echo Machine - How Right-Wing Extremism Created A Post-Truth America (Hardcover): David Pakman The Echo Machine - How Right-Wing Extremism Created A Post-Truth America (Hardcover)
David Pakman
R584 R531 Discovery Miles 5 310 Save R53 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the host of The David Pakman Show comes a vital look at how right-wing extremism has led to the fall of critical thinking and rise of reactionary politics—and what we can do about it to save democracy.

Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology.

If there is one thing the 2024 election cycle showed us, it’s how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized on disinformation and the polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Infused with Pakman’s signature pragmatic insight, The Echo Machine is not just a critique nor an instruction manual, but an invitation to think, question, and understand how we got to this point and what we can do to mend our broken system.

Deeply researched and accessibly written, readers will learn:

  • The underlying issues with political discourse in America today.
  • How these issues have led to the intellectual race to the bottom.
  • Practical ways to improve discourse through improving critical thinking, media literacy, and public education.
  • Examples from real-world debates and discussions to better understand the impact of these issues on our democracy and why leftism is the best path forward.

Pakman calmly cuts through the alarmist noise to inspire readers across the political spectrum to break out of our toxic political echo chambers and ultimately save our democracy.

The epic story of a dying woman who makes a deal with Death: in exchange for letting her live, she must show him the beauty of human life and prove that humanity is worth saving.

When Death comes to claim Nella May Carter, she catches His interest with her capacity to find beauty and love even amidst the hell of slavery. So Death - bored, disgusted by humanity, and believing the Earth would be greatly improved should humans no longer exist - lures Nella into a Faustian bargain: the chance at immortal life if she proves that Death is mistaken.

The price: Nella must entertain his fascination and challenge his beliefs until he is satisfied... or surrender herself - and the entire human race - to him forever. Nella's solution is to never stop travelling and writing, documenting the beauty in every place and person she encounters - from writing in Victorian ladies' tattlers and reporting in Gilded Age New York, to penning bestselling novels and memoirs under countless noms de plume. Nella experiences joy and loss, passion and pain; she finds love in its many forms with friends, partners, and lovers.

All the while, Death is watching - and waiting for her to surrender.

Nella is almost ready to concede to Death when she meets a handsome professor. Tired of deception, desperate for a real connection, Nella begins to tell him her story - centred on her greatest romances over the centuries. And, in the telling, it becomes clear that Nella's own story might be the greatest love story of them all.

Is a River Alive? (Hardcover): Robert Macfarlane Is a River Alive? (Hardcover)

From celebrated writer Robert Macfarlane comes this brilliant, perspective-shifting new book – which answers a resounding yes to the question of its title.

At its heart is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings – who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law. Is a River Alive? takes the reader on an exhilarating exploration of the past, present and futures of this ancient, urgent concept.

The book flows first to northern Ecuador, where a miraculous cloud-forest and its rivers are threatened by goldmining.

Then, to the wounded rivers, creeks and lagoons of southern India, where a desperate battle to save the lives of these waterbodies is under way.

And finally, to north-eastern Quebec, where a spectacular wild river – the Mutehekau or Magpie – is being defended from death by damming in a river-rights campaign.

The Courage to Change - Saying Goodbye to Good Enough and Embracing the Promise of What Can Be (Hardcover): Joyce Meyer The Courage to Change - Saying Goodbye to Good Enough and Embracing the Promise of What Can Be (Hardcover)
Joyce Meyer
R609 R521 Discovery Miles 5 210 Save R88 (14%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Change is inevitable. And sometimes it’s confusing and difficult, even when it’s good. We can’t keep change from coming, but we can allow it to transform us rather than derail us by facing it and embracing it through the lens of God’s unchanging promises to us.

We’ve all heard the saying, “The only constant is change.”  Sometimes the changes we face, both expected and unexpected, can make our lives feel ungrounded and unsteady. And when we react to change with fear, an opportunity for growth can turn into overwhelming anxiety that locks us into situations, relationships, and ways of thinking and being that prevent us from living in the fullness of who we truly are in Christ.

Beloved Bible teacher and #1 New York Times bestselling author Joyce Meyer wants us to know that even when we feel like the ground beneath our feet is shifting, we can stand firm on the promise of God’s Word that He will see us through. With her signature insight and timeless wisdom, Joyce shows us how to align our emotional reactions to changes with the truth of God’s promise that He will work all changes for good in our lives, even the most painful and difficult ones. In TheCourage to Change, you will learn how to:

  • Embrace change as a necessary part of growth
  • Replace a mindset of fear with a mindset of opportunity
  • And live fully within the uncertainty of change while maintaining peace.

We will all face changes again and again throughout our lifetimes. We don’t have to live dreading the challenges that these changes bring. We can equip ourselves to become people of bravery, optimism, and hope in an ever-changing world, because we have God’s assurance that His character and His promises will never change.

Become a change warrior and embrace the courage to change.

The Courage to Change also contains study questions at the end of each chapter for individual or group reflection.
Night Watch (Paperback): Terry Pratchett Night Watch (Paperback)
Terry Pratchett
R275 Discovery Miles 2 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is in hot pursuit of a serial killer. The trouble is, a well-timed lightning strike has thrown both policeman and pursued into the city’s past. Now Vimes must relive the history that made him: a cruel regime, a bloody revolution, a corrupt police force, and, most unnerving of all, a keen young recruit named Sam Vimes… Night Watch, which draws on inspirations as far ranging as Victor Hugo and M*A*S*H, is a keen satire about the true nature of political power, and the sacrifices made in the name of the greater good; but also a profoundly empathetic novel about community, connection and the tenacity of the human spirit.

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels are among the most successful and influential fantasy titles of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This edition of Night Watch – written at the height of Pratchett’s imaginative powers – includes a new foreword by Rob Wilkins and an introduction and annotations by Dr David Lloyd and Dr Darryl Jones, contextualising the novel and Pratchett’s far-reaching legacy for new readers and current fans alike.

River Fugue is Sarah Frost’s second poetry collection, and continues with the search to find herself through her connections to nature which she explored in her first collection, Conduit.

The poems grapple with the persistence of wonder, how one finds it, then loses it, then finds it again. By describing the loss, they evoke it as well, the absence accentuating even more strongly what she yearns for. The collection records a coming to terms with a difficult childhood, and the renegotiation of an adult relationship with the poet’s parents.

Writing to forgive, the poet has crafted poems that are transcendent and affirmatory.

Sarah Uheida's poetry collection Not This Tender is a profound exploration of memory, navigating the landscape of the war-torn North Africa she was forced to flee as a child.

It is a mythical yet deeply personal examination of longing and belonging, estrangement, loss and the influence of family and language, presented through immersive portraits and the lens of a fractured landscape. Here, poetry is wielded as both refuge and rupture in an excavation of the past – not to preserve it, but to make sense of the future.

Through its vivid, evocative imagery, the collection offers a powerful journey through the restless search for home, and the fragile yet unrelenting hope of return.

In the early 2000s, the BBC launched its biggest oral history project, recording the lives and experiences of the ordinary people who lived through World War II. It amounted to 47,000 testimonies and over 400 diaries and letters, all of which have remained unexplored in the archives for twenty years – until now.

In The People's War, John Willis reveals untold stories of everyday bravery, moments of terror, and tales of life-affirming community, that guide us through the years of the World War II. From soldiers in North Africa and prisoners of war in East Asia, to evacuees in the British countryside and women in the factories, The People's War is a truly ambitious and comprehensive journey through a devastating and pivotal period of our history, as you've never read before.

Follow the remarkable stories of ordinary individuals who lived, fought, grieved, loved, and survived through the war.

When European missionaries arrived in India in the sixteenth century, they entered a world both fascinating and bewildering. Hinduism, as they saw it, was a pagan mess: a worship of devils and monsters by a people who burned women alive, performed outlandish rites and fed children to crocodiles. But it quickly became clear that Hindu ‘idolatry’ was far more layered and complex than European stereotypes allowed, surprisingly even sharing certain impulses with Christianity.

Nonetheless, missionaries became a threatening force as European power grew in India. Western ways of thinking gained further ascendancy during the British Raj: while interest in Hindu thought influenced Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire in Europe, Orientalism and colonial rule pressed Hindus to reimagine their religion. In fact, in resisting foreign authority, they often adopted the missionaries’ own tools and strategies. It is this encounter, Manu S. Pillai argues, that has given Hinduism its present shape, also contributing to the birth of an aggressive Hindu nationalism.

Gods, Guns and Missionaries surveys these remarkable dynamics with an arresting cast of characters – maharajahs, poets, gun-wielding revolutionaries, politicians, polemicists, philosophers and clergymen. Lucid, ambitious, and provocative, it is at once a political history, an examination of the mutual impact of Hindu culture and Christianity upon each other, and a study of the forces that have prepared the ground for politics in India today. Turning away from simplistic ideas on religious evolution and European imperialism, the past as it appears here is more complicated – and infinitely richer – than previous narratives allow.
