Taxation by Political Inertia - Financing the Growth of Government in Britain (Hardcover): Richard Rose, Terence Karran Taxation by Political Inertia - Financing the Growth of Government in Britain (Hardcover)
Richard Rose, Terence Karran
R2,343 Discovery Miles 23 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1987, is a study of the political processes that underlie the determination of taxation - and much else - in the centuries-old government of Britain. Governments inherit a large legacy of policies, and it is the inertia force of past commitments that determine much of what a government does. This is especially true of taxation, and this book explores the forces at work on the policies of taxation. It also helps us understand what might be the future of taxation.

The Economics of Public Health - Evaluating Public Health Interventions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Heather Brown The Economics of Public Health - Evaluating Public Health Interventions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Heather Brown
R2,407 Discovery Miles 24 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Non-communicable diseases have surpassed infectious diseases as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Prevention and treatment of the causes and consequences of lifestyle-related diseases forms an important part of health policy in the twenty-first century. Public health economics - from quantifying the problem, to evaluating interventions and developing toolkits to assist decision makers - is an essential area for any postgraduate student and researcher with an interest in applied economics to understand. There are a wide range of techniques from mainstream economics and health economics that can be applied to the evaluation of public health policy and public health issues. In this book, Brown presents examples from developed countries to illustrate how economic tools can be applied to public health. Further, cross-country comparisons illustrate how contextual factors related to healthcare systems, demographics and environmental factors may impact on outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of public health policies, in order to aid understanding and help students apply theory into practice.

Educating Public Interest Professionals and the Student Loan Debt Crisis (Hardcover): Robert Leslie Fisher Educating Public Interest Professionals and the Student Loan Debt Crisis (Hardcover)
Robert Leslie Fisher
R3,196 Discovery Miles 31 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Educating Public Interest Professionals and the Student Loan Debt Crisis, Robert Leslie Fisher examines the student loan debt crisis and its effects on America's citizens and economies. Exploring the shortage of professionals in fields such as education, medicine, and law, Fisher analyzes the causes and effects of the student loan debt crisis in America and argues for higher wages, student loan debt forgiveness, and an updated financial model to pay for training for public interest professionals. Supported by economic research and a sociological background, Fisher proposes a path forward that will ease the student loan debt crisis and revitalize the economy.

Aimee L. Franklin
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyses the relationship between stakeholder engagement practices and organizational sustainability across sectors and disciplines. It illuminates the relationships between the inputs and processes, vital for all kinds of organizations to engage stakeholders. Then, it describes the mutually-valued outcomes that can produce broader organizational impacts and sustainability. Each chapter is structured around a logic model that provides an analytical framework to engage the reader in strategic analysis and offer practical applications for adaptation and implementation in any organization. China's Fiscal Policy - Theoretical and Situation Analysis (Hardcover): Gao Peiyong China's Fiscal Policy - Theoretical and Situation Analysis (Hardcover)
Gao Peiyong
R4,908 Discovery Miles 49 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fiscal policy has always been a primary measure of macroeconomic control. The fiscal revenue and expenditure can influence the operation of the whole economic and social activities by changing the existing GDP distribution pattern, affecting the consumption and investment of enterprises and people, etc. Within the framework of macroeconomic analysis, this book reviews the evolution of China's fiscal policy, and the main changes China's economy has experienced since 1990s. To begin with, it makes an empirical research of China's national debts, including their relationship with macroeconomic regulation and total social demand. Besides, it examines the economic effect mechanism of national debts issuance. Then it focuses on the taxation issues, elucidating the sources of tax revenue growth and the judgments on tax burden. The issue of tax reduction is also covered, especially its complexity in China. Lastly, it provides insights into China's fiscal tendency, changes of macroeconomic policies, and financial operation in the context of the "New Normal". Scholars and students in economics, finance and Chinese economic studies will be attracted by this book. Also, it will appeal to readers interested in modern Chinese economic history.

Securitization: Past, Present and Future (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Solomon Deku, Alper Kara Securitization: Past, Present and Future (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Solomon Deku, Alper Kara
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to explore if and how securitization changed financial intermediation and lending behaviour by reviewing the pre- and post-financial crisis theoretical and empirical literature. The book's distinctive feature is bringing the growing post-crisis empirical evidence to the attention of a wider audience by critically appraising it against pre-crisis arguments. With its thought-provoking insights, this book is of particular interest for students, practitioners and academics.

Fiscal Tiers (Routledge Revivals) - The Economics of Multi-Level Government (Paperback): David King Fiscal Tiers (Routledge Revivals) - The Economics of Multi-Level Government (Paperback)
David King
R1,253 Discovery Miles 12 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1984. This book brings together and develops the economic theory relating to the design and operation of systems of non-central government - positing major developments in several areas. It considers what functions systems most suitably perform in non-central governments, and their appropriate size and structure. How these authorities might finance themselves - by taxes, charges or loans - is analysed in detail. It also examines the use of grants by higher tiers of government and how such programmes should be designed. Concentrating on contemporary economic concerns, it relates the theory to practice in countries such as Australia, Canada, West Germany, the UK and USA.

Infrastructure and Economic Growth in Asia (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): John Cockburn, Yazid Dissou, Jean-yves Duclos, Luca Tiberti Infrastructure and Economic Growth in Asia (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
John Cockburn, Yazid Dissou, Jean-yves Duclos, Luca Tiberti
R1,800 Discovery Miles 18 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Public spending on infrastructure plays an important role in promoting economic growth and poverty alleviation. Empirical studies unequivocally show that under-investment in infrastructure limit economic growth. At the same time, numerous other studies have shown that investment in infrastructure can be a highly effective tool in fighting poverty reduction1. In that context, the financing of infrastructure has been a critical element of most economic growth and poverty reduction strategies in developing countries, since the start of this millennium. This bookprovides a comparative analysis of the aggregate and sectoral implications of higher spending on infrastructure in three very different Asian countries: China, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Particular attention is paid to the role of alternative financing mechanisms for increasing public infrastructure investment, namely distortionary and non-distortionary means of financing. The book will be of interest to scholars and policy-makers concerned with economic growth in developing countries."

Public Private Partnerships Renegotiations in Transportation - Case Studies from Portugal (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Carlos... Public Private Partnerships Renegotiations in Transportation - Case Studies from Portugal (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Carlos Oliveira Cruz, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento
R3,111 Discovery Miles 31 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is a growing interest in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), particularly in infrastructure and public services. Under the scope of PPPs, renegotiations are becoming more relevant, as empirical evidence suggests that most PPP projects are inevitably renegotiated, i.e., the original contract needs to be adapted to new and unforeseen circumstances. Renegotiations have a substantial impact on the contract and performance of a PPP and usually represent significant costs for users and taxpayers. However, very little is known about the management and, mainly, the process of renegotiating that will, very likely, occur. This book provides a set of case-studies of PPP renegotiations in the transport sector. The authors illustrate the Portuguese experience, a country that has been using PPP extensively, particularly in transport. The case studies provide an extensive and detailed analysis on each aspect of the project and the renegotiation. What drives renegotiations? Why are some projects more renegotiated than others? What are the results? How can the performance of renegotiation processes be improved? These and other questions provide the basis for the discussions in this book. The novelty and value of the book come mainly from the extent of information available. Each case-study deals with these questions in much more detail than what is common in the case-studies approach.

Catching Capital - The Ethics of Tax Competition (Hardcover): Peter Dietsch Catching Capital - The Ethics of Tax Competition (Hardcover)
Peter Dietsch
R1,200 Discovery Miles 12 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rich people stash away trillions of dollars in tax havens like Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, or Singapore. Multinational corporations shift their profits to low-tax jurisdictions like Ireland or Panama to avoid paying tax. Recent stories in the media about Apple, Google, Starbucks, and Fiat are just the tip of the iceberg. There is hardly any multinational today that respects not just the letter but also the spirit of tax laws. All this becomes possible due to tax competition, with countries strategically designing fiscal policy to attract capital from abroad. The loopholes in national tax regimes that tax competition generates and exploits draw into question political economic life as we presently know it. They undermine the fiscal autonomy of political communities and contribute to rising inequalities in income and wealth. Building on a careful analysis of the ethical challenges raised by a world of tax competition, this book puts forward a normative and institutional framework to regulate the practice. In short, individuals and corporations should pay tax in the jurisdictions of which they are members, where this membership can come in degrees. Moreover, the strategic tax setting of states should be limited in important ways. An International Tax Organisation (ITO) should be created to enforce the principles of tax justice. The author defends this call for reform against two important objections. First, Dietsch refutes the suggestion that regulating tax competition is inefficient. Second, he argues that regulation of this sort, rather than representing a constraint on national sovereignty, in fact turns out to be a requirement of sovereignty in a global economy. The book closes with a series of reflections on the obligations that the beneficiaries of tax competition have towards the losers both prior to any institutional reform as well as in its aftermath.

Statistical Tools for Program Evaluation - Methods and Applications to Economic Policy, Public Health, and Education... Statistical Tools for Program Evaluation - Methods and Applications to Economic Policy, Public Health, and Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Jean-Michel Josselin, Benoit Le Maux
R4,310 Discovery Miles 43 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a self-contained presentation of the statistical tools required for evaluating public programs, as advocated by many governments, the World Bank, the European Union, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. After introducing the methodological framework of program evaluation, the first chapters are devoted to the collection, elementary description and multivariate analysis of data as well as the estimation of welfare changes. The book then successively presents the tools of ex-ante methods (financial analysis, budget planning, cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness and multi-criteria evaluation) and ex-post methods (benchmarking, experimental and quasi-experimental evaluation). The step-by-step approach and the systematic use of numerical illustrations equip readers to handle the statistics of program evaluation. It not only offers practitioners from public administrations, consultancy firms and nongovernmental organizations the basic tools and advanced techniques used in program assessment, it is also suitable for executive management training, upper undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as for self-study.

Defense Economics - An Institutional Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Marcus Matthias Keupp Defense Economics - An Institutional Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Marcus Matthias Keupp
R2,417 Discovery Miles 24 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This textbook examines the economic problems of military organizations from an institutional perspective. It discusses the efficiency and effectiveness of military performance, using a capability-based conceptualization. Constitutional, historical and economic considerations complement the analysis. Neither the analysis nor the conclusions depend on any specific armed force, culture, organization, or language. On the contrary, the challenge of defense economics analysis and armed forces management is reduced to a fundamental economic problem, and solutions to this problem are offered. This book is a must-read for students, scholars and practitioners interested in a better understanding of defense economics.

Tax Policy for Aging Societies - Lessons from Japan (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): A. Okamoto Tax Policy for Aging Societies - Lessons from Japan (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
A. Okamoto
R2,748 Discovery Miles 27 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Japanese population is aging faster than any other in the world. The per centage of Japan's population aged 65 and above was only 7.1% in 1970, but just 30 years later, in 2000, it reached 17.2%. A declining birth rate and a rising average life expectancy will continue to push this trend further. This situation is causing serious problems for Japanese society.Structural reforms, especially tax and social security reforms, to accommodate this drastic demographic change have become an urgent policy issue. The purpose of this book is to establish guidelines for tax and social security reforms in Japan in terms that are both efficient and equitable. In this study, an extended life-cycle general equilibrium model is employed to rigorously take account of the rapidly aging Japanese population. The simulation approach adopted in our analysis permits us to calculate the effects of alternative policy packages on capital accumulation and economic welfare. This enables us to make proposals for concrete economic policies."

Economic Sociodynamics (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Ruslan Grinberg, Alexander Rubinstein Economic Sociodynamics (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Ruslan Grinberg, Alexander Rubinstein
R2,654 Discovery Miles 26 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this ambitious book, the authors challenge mainstream economic theory by reconsidering the principle of individualism as its foundation. They refer to that version which fails to recognize the existence of the interests of society as such, and thus excludes the role of the state as an independent market player seeking to realize these interests. The outcome is a new theoretical concept called "Economic Sociodynamics." The book reveals this concept in detail, in particular its key notions of the sociodynamic multiplier and the rational behavior of the state.

Inflation - History and Measurement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Robert O'Neill, Jeff Ralph, Paul Smith Inflation - History and Measurement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Robert O'Neill, Jeff Ralph, Paul Smith
R4,078 Discovery Miles 40 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an introduction to the history of - and current measurement practice of - inflation for the United Kingdom. The authors describe the historical development of inflation measures in a global context, and do so without using formal mathematical language and related jargon that relates only to a few specialist scholars. Although inflation is a widely used and quoted statistic, and despite the important role inflation plays in real people's lives - through pension uprating, train tickets, interest rates and the work of economists - few people understand how it is created. O'Neill, Ralph and Smith mix historical data with a description of practices inside the UK statistical system and abroad, which will aid understanding of how this important economic statistic is produced, and the important and controversial choices that statisticians have made over time.

The European economy is still in recession, even though there are some weak indications of stabilization. This book examines important aspects of the crisis in selected countries of Southern Europe, the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The intensity of the crisis and its economic and social repercussions have varied from country to country, generally impacting the core countries less than those on the periphery. The countries in the latter group currently face significant structural challenges with regard to improving productivity and competitiveness, including the areas of investment, climate, the labour market, and the public sector. The book not only illustrates the scope of the problem, but also informs readers on the policies implemented to address it, and discusses the progress some of the economies have already made. Special topics include the convergence hypothesis, agriculture and growth, Public-Private Partnership in Infrastructure (PPPI), and the labour market.

Advances in Taxation (Hardcover): John Hasseldine Advances in Taxation (Hardcover)
John Hasseldine
R3,124 Discovery Miles 31 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Volume 24 of Advances in Taxation contains seven articles, covering topics such as the impact of FASB Financial Interpretation No. 48 adoption through the lens of debt covenants; conflicting results in two prior studies on the relation between aggressive financial reporting and tax reporting; how a firm's external environment affects its tax avoidance activities; and bonus depreciation. Other articles use a behavioral research methodology to explore generational values and attitudes towards tax fairness and tax compliance; the expectation gap between tax clients' motivations to hire tax preparers versus tax preparers' perceptions of those clients' motivations; and evidence on the level and determinants of corporate income tax compliance costs.

Tax Avoidance and Anti-Avoidance Measures in Major Developing Economies (Hardcover, New): Phyllis Mo Tax Avoidance and Anti-Avoidance Measures in Major Developing Economies (Hardcover, New)
Phyllis Mo
R3,199 R2,857 Discovery Miles 28 570 Save R342 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tax avoidance and evasion have an important effect on the economic development of every economy. Developing economies are particularly vulnerable to tax avoidance and evasion due to inadequacies in their institutional framework and the lack of sufficient expertise and resources to monitor the intricacies of this issue. Given the far-reaching effect of revenue losses due to tax noncompliance, many developing countries have undertaken tax reforms to improve their tax administration and implemented various anti-avoidance measures to combat tax evasion. This book provides an overview of recent tax reforms and institutional frameworks of four major developing economies, China, India, Brazil, and Mexico, with a focus on China. Most important, this book investigates the tax avoidance behaviors as well as their anti-avoidance legislation. In particular, this book includes an in-depth empirical study on tax noncompliance behaviors of foreign investors detected by the Chinese tax authorities. The empirical evidence on how tax policy and other corporate factors affect tax avoidance behavior helps public policy makers improve tax compliance through designing legislative and administrative measures. Though the findings pertain to China, the largest developing economy, the results should be a useful reference for other developing countries.

R2,687 R1,786 Discovery Miles 17 860 Save R901 (34%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the evolution of the third tier of the Indian federal system, with a focus on rural local governance (commonly known as Panchayati Raj) against the backdrop of important theoretical and empirical literature on the relevance and effectiveness of service delivery in the decentralized system. It evaluates the quintessence of the functioning of the Panchayati Raj in the past two decades of its existence. This pioneering book also discusses the treatment of the third-tier government in the inter-governmental fiscal transfer framework and the delineation of the unique institution of local self-government in the Northeastern Indian States. In the light of the loosely evolved fiscal relations between three levels of government, it has been observed that local self-governments in the bottom tier have not been truly empowered yet. The book argues in favor of integrating the third-tier government into the Indian federal system and suggests how this could be achieved.
