In Flight from Conflict and Violence - UNHCR's Consultations on Refugee Status and Other Forms of International Protection... In Flight from Conflict and Violence - UNHCR's Consultations on Refugee Status and Other Forms of International Protection (Hardcover)
Volker Turk, Alice Edwards, Cornelis Wouters
R3,230 Discovery Miles 32 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The impact of violence and conflict on refugee status determination and international protection is a key developing field. Given the contemporary dynamics of armed conflict, how to interpret and apply the refugee definitions at global and regional levels is increasingly relevant to governmental policy-makers, decision-makers, legal practitioners, academics and students. This book will provide a comprehensive analysis of the global and regional refugee instruments as they apply to claimants in flight from situations of armed violence and conflict, exploring their interrelationship and how they are interpreted and applied (or should be applied). As part of a broader United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees project to develop guidelines on the interpretation and application of international refugee law instruments to claimants fleeing armed conflict and other situations of violence, it includes contributions from leading scholars and practitioners in this field as well as emerging authors with specific expertise.

Voluntary and Forced Migration in Latin America - Law and Policy Reforms (Paperback): Natalia Caicedo Camacho, Luisa Feline... Voluntary and Forced Migration in Latin America - Law and Policy Reforms (Paperback)
Natalia Caicedo Camacho, Luisa Feline Freier; Translated by Dustin Welch Garcia, Andrea Kvietok Duenas
R946 Discovery Miles 9 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Latin America provides a compelling case for the study of migration policies and laws, with several factors - including both internal and interregional migration and refugee flows, the region's progressive approach to the management of human mobility, and several forced displacement crises of the contemporary era - offering unique insights. Despite the region's heterogeneous migration flows and unique immigration and refugee laws, the academic literature has thus far lacked in-depth explorations of migration policy in Latin America. Voluntary and Forced Migration in Latin America presents a comparative analysis of the migration legislation of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. For each country, the collection provides a historical overview of the evolution of migration legislation, an analysis of the migration flows and types of migrant profiles, and an examination of the country's current immigration, asylum, and nationality legislation. The primary regional and international mechanisms that facilitate a normative approach to voluntary and forced migration, as well as to migrant and refugee rights, are also thoroughly interrogated. Situating itself in the often progressive immigration policies of Latin America, Voluntary and Forced Migration in Latin America offers alternative solutions for other countries facing migration challenges in different contexts.

The Precarious Lives of Syrians - Migration, Citizenship, and Temporary Protection in Turkey (Hardcover): Feyzi Baban, Suzan... The Precarious Lives of Syrians - Migration, Citizenship, and Temporary Protection in Turkey (Hardcover)
Feyzi Baban, Suzan Ilcan, Kim Rygiel
R2,773 Discovery Miles 27 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Turkey now hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees in the world, more than 3.6 million of the 12.7 million displaced by the Syrian Civil War. Many of them are subject to an unpredictable temporary protection, forcing them to live under vulnerable and insecure conditions. The Precarious Lives of Syrians examines the three dimensions of the architecture of precarity: Syrian migrants' legal status, the spaces in which they live and work, and their movements within and outside Turkey. The difficulties they face include restricted access to education and healthcare, struggles to secure employment, language barriers, identity-based discrimination, and unlawful deportations. Feyzi Baban, Suzan Ilcan, and Kim Rygiel show that Syrians confront their precarious conditions by engaging in cultural production and community-building activities, and by undertaking perilous journeys to Europe, allowing them to claim spaces and citizenship while asserting their rights to belong, to stay, and to escape. The authors draw on migration policies, legal and scholarly materials, and five years of extensive field research with local, national, and international humanitarian organizations, and with Syrians from all walks of life. The Precarious Lives of Syrians offers a thoughtful and compelling analysis of migration precarity in our contemporary context.

Deportable and Disposable - Public Rhetoric and the Making of the "Illegal" Immigrant (Hardcover): Lisa A. Flores Deportable and Disposable - Public Rhetoric and the Making of the "Illegal" Immigrant (Hardcover)
Lisa A. Flores
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 1920s, the US government passed legislation against undocumented entry into the country, and as a result the figure of the "illegal alien" took form in the national discourse. In this book, Lisa A. Flores explores the history of our language about Mexican immigrants and exposes how our words made these migrants "illegal." Deportable and Disposable brings a rhetorical lens to a question that has predominantly concerned historians: how do differently situated immigrant populations come to belong within the national space of whiteness, and thus of American-ness? Flores presents a genealogy of our immigration discourse through four stereotypes: the "illegal alien," a foreigner and criminal who quickly became associated with Mexican migrants; the "bracero," a docile Mexican contract laborer; the "zoot suiter," a delinquent Mexican American youth engaged in gang culture; and the "wetback," an unwanted migrant who entered the country by swimming across the Rio Grande. By showing how these figures were constructed, Flores provides insight into the ways in which we racialize language and how we can transform our political rhetoric to ensure immigrant populations come to belong as part of the country, as Americans. Timely, thoughtful, and eye-opening, Deportable and Disposable initiates a necessary conversation about the relationship between racial rhetoric and the literal and figurative borders of the nation. This powerful book will inform policy makers, scholars, activists, and anyone else interested in race, rhetoric, and immigration in the United States.

Illegally Staying in the EU - An Analysis of Illegality in EU Migration Law (Paperback): Benedita Menezes Queiroz Illegally Staying in the EU - An Analysis of Illegality in EU Migration Law (Paperback)
Benedita Menezes Queiroz
R1,471 Discovery Miles 14 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Principally, this book comprises a conceptual analysis of the illegality of a third-country national's stay by examining the boundaries of the overarching concept of illegality at the EU level. Having found that the holistic conceptualisation of illegality, constructed through a combination of sources (both EU and national law) falls short of adequacy, the book moves on to consider situations that fall outside the traditional binary of legal and illegal under EU law. The cases of unlawfully staying EU citizens and of non-removable illegally staying third-country nationals are examples of groups of migrants who are categorised as atypical. By looking at these two examples the book reveals not only the fragmentation of legal statuses in EU migration law but also the more general ill-fitting and unsatisfactory categorisation of migrants. The potential conflation of illegality with criminality as a result of the way EU databases regulate the legal regime of illegality of a migrant's stay is the first trend identified by the book. Subsequently, the book considers the functions of accessing legality (both instrumental and corrective). In doing so it draws out another trend evident in the EU illegality regime: a two-tier regime which discriminates on the basis of wealth and the instrumentalisation of access to legality by Member States for mostly their own purposes. Finally, the book proposes a corrective rationale for the regulation of illegality through access to legality and provides a number of normative suggestions as a way of remedying current deficiencies that arise out of the present supranational framing of illegality.

International Political Theory and the Refugee Problem (Paperback): Natasha Saunders International Political Theory and the Refugee Problem (Paperback)
Natasha Saunders
R1,435 Discovery Miles 14 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'The refugee problem' is a term that it has become almost impossible to escape. Although used by a wide range of actors involved in work related to forced migration, these actors do not often explain what exactly 'the problem' is that they are working to solve, leading to an unfortunate conflation of two quite different 'problems': the problems that refugees face and the problems that refugees pose. Beginning from the simple, yet too often overlooked, observation that how one conceives of solving a problem is inseparable from what one understands that problem to be, Saunders' study explores the questions raised about how to address 'the refugee problem' if we recognise that there may not be just one 'problem', and that not all actors involved with the refugee regime conceive of their work as addressing the same 'problem'. Utilising the work of Michel Foucault, the book first charts how different 'problems' lend themselves to particular kinds of solutions, arguing that the international refugee regime is best understood as developed to 'solve' the refugee (as) problem, rather than refugees' problems. Turning to the work of Hannah Arendt, the book then reframes 'the refugee problem' from the perspective of the refugee, rather than the state, and investigates the extent to which doing so can open up creative space for rethinking the more traditional solutions to the refugee (as) problem. Cases of refugee protest in Europe, and the burgeoning Sanctuary Movement in the UK, are examined as two sub-state and popular movements which could constitute such creative solutions to a reframed problem. The consequences of the 'refugee' label, and of the discourses of humanitarianism and emergency is a topic of critical concern, and as such, the book will form important reading for a scholars and students of (international) political theory and forced migration studies.

Refugees in Extended Exile - Living on the Edge (Paperback): Jennifer Hyndman, Wenona Giles Refugees in Extended Exile - Living on the Edge (Paperback)
Jennifer Hyndman, Wenona Giles
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that the international refugee regime and its 'temporary' humanitarian interventions have failed. Most refugees across the global live in 'protracted' conditions that extend from years to decades, without legal status that allows them to work and establish a home. It is contended that they become largely invisible to people based in the global North, and cease to remain fully human subjects with access to their political lives. Shifting the conversation away from the salient discourse of 'solutions' and technical fixes within state-centric international relations, the authors recover the subjectivity lost for those stuck in extended exile. The book first argues that humanitarian assistance to refugees remains vital to people's survival, even after the emergency phase is over. It then connects asylum politics in the global North with the intransigence of extended exile in the global South. By placing the urgent crises of protracted exile within a broader constellation of power relations, both historical and geographical, the authors present research and empirical findings gleaned from refugees in Iran, Kenya and Canada and from humanitarian and government workers. Each chapter reveals patterns of power circulating through the 'colonial present', Cold War legacies, and the global 'war on terror". Seeking to render legible the more quotidian struggles and livelihoods of people who find themselves defined as refugees, this book will be of great interest to international humanitarian agencies, as well as migration and refugee researchers, including scholars in refugee studies and human displacement, human security, globalization, immigration, and human rights.

Migration, Ethics and Power - Spaces Of Hospitality In International Politics (Hardcover): Dan Bulley Migration, Ethics and Power - Spaces Of Hospitality In International Politics (Hardcover)
Dan Bulley
R4,110 Discovery Miles 41 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2014, the ethics and politics of hospitality were brought into stark relief. Three years into the Syrian conflict, which had already created nearly 2.5 million refugees and internally displaced 6.5 million, the UN called on industrialised countries to share the burden of offering hospitality through a fixed quota system. The UK opted out of the system whilst hailing their acceptance of a moral responsibility by welcoming only 500 of the 'most vulnerable' Syrians. Given the state's exclusionary character, what opportunities do other spaces in international politics offer by way of hospitality to migrants and refugees? Hospitality can take many different forms and have many diverse purposes. But wherever it occurs, the boundaries that enable it and make it possible are both created and unsettled via exercises of power and their resistance. Through modern examples including refugee camps, global cities, postcolonial states and Europe, as well as analysis of Derridean and Foucauldian concepts, Migration, Ethics and Power explores: The process and practice of hospitality The spaces that hospitality produces The intimate relationship between ethics and power This is a brilliantly contemporary text for students of politics, international relations and political geography.

Survival Migration - Failed Governance and the Crisis of Displacement (Paperback): Alexander Betts Survival Migration - Failed Governance and the Crisis of Displacement (Paperback)
Alexander Betts
R783 Discovery Miles 7 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International treaties, conventions, and organizations to protect refugees were established in the aftermath of World War II to protect people escaping targeted persecution by their own governments. However, the nature of cross-border displacement has transformed dramatically since then. Such threats as environmental change, food insecurity, and generalized violence force massive numbers of people to flee states that are unable or unwilling to ensure their basic rights, as do conditions in failed and fragile states that make possible human rights deprivations. Because these reasons do not meet the legal understanding of persecution, the victims of these circumstances are not usually recognized as "refugees," preventing current institutions from ensuring their protection.

In this book, Alexander Betts develops the concept of "survival migration" to highlight the crisis in which these people find themselves. Examining flight from three of the most fragile states in Africa Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia Betts explains variation in institutional responses across the neighboring host states. There is massive inconsistency. Some survival migrants are offered asylum as refugees; others are rounded up, detained, and deported, often in brutal conditions. The inadequacies of the current refugee regime are a disaster for human rights and gravely threaten international security. In Survival Migration, Betts outlines these failings, illustrates the enormous human suffering that results, and argues strongly for an expansion of protected categories."

Safeguarding Children from Abroad - Refugee, Asylum Seeking and Trafficked Children in the UK (Paperback): Nadine Finch,... Safeguarding Children from Abroad - Refugee, Asylum Seeking and Trafficked Children in the UK (Paperback)
Nadine Finch, Catherine Shaw, Stefan Stoyanov, Savita De De Sousa, Mina Fazel; Edited by …
R901 Discovery Miles 9 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Children from abroad who are alone in the UK are vulnerable and at increased risk of harm without the care and protection of their parents or caregivers. They may be unaccompanied asylum seekers, refugees, or victims of trafficking. This book examines the issues and problems faced by these children, what their needs are, and how these needs should be met in order to ensure their effective safeguarding. It demonstrates that these children often receive a different level of service to children who are UK citizens, and examines how these gaps in services can be addressed. Chapters cover the identification and age assessment of separated children, accommodation provision, private fostering, mental health, detention and returns, and the role of the guardian. Case studies and best practice points are included throughout the book. This important book will be essential reading for all those who encounter separated children, including social workers, counsellors, health care professionals and those working in the voluntary sector.

Children of the Greek Civil War (Hardcover, New): Loring M. Danforth Children of the Greek Civil War (Hardcover, New)
Loring M. Danforth
R2,790 Discovery Miles 27 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the height of the Greek Civil War in 1948, thirty-eight thousand children were evacuated from their homes in the mountains of northern Greece. The Greek Communist Party relocated half of them to orphanages in Eastern Europe, while their adversaries in the national government placed the rest in children's homes elsewhere in Greece. A point of contention during the Cold War, this controversial episode continues to fuel tensions between Greeks and Macedonians and within Greek society itself. Loring M. Danforth and Riki Van Boeschoten present here for the first time a comprehensive study of the two evacuation programs and the lives of the children they forever transformed.
Marshalling archival records, oral histories, and ethnographic fieldwork, the authors analyze the evacuation process, the political conflict surrounding it, the children's upbringing, and their fates as adults cut off from their parents and their homeland. They also give voice to seven refugee children who poignantly recount their childhood experiences and heroic efforts to construct new lives in diaspora communities throughout the world. A much-needed corrective to previous historical accounts, "Children of the Greek Civil War" is also a searching examination of the enduring effects of displacement on the lives of refugee children.

Transforming Displaced Women in Sudan - Politics and the Body in a Squatter Settlement (Hardcover): Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf Transforming Displaced Women in Sudan - Politics and the Body in a Squatter Settlement (Hardcover)
Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf
R2,617 Discovery Miles 26 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over twenty years of civil war in predominantly Christian Southern Sudan has forced countless people from their homes. "Transforming Displaced Women in Sudan" examines the lives of women who have forged a new community in a shantytown on the outskirts of Khartoum, the largely Muslim, heavily Arabized capital in the north of the country. Sudanese-born anthropologist Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf delivers a rich ethnography of this squatter settlement based on personal interviews with displaced women and careful observation of the various strategies they adopt to reconstruct their lives and livelihoods. Her findings debunk the myth that these settlements are utterly abject, and instead she discovers a dynamic culture where many women play an active role in fighting for peace and social change. Abusharaf also examines the way women's bodies are politicized by their displacement, analyzing issues such as religious conversion, marriage, and female circumcision. An urgent dispatch from the ongoing humanitarian crisis in northeastern Africa, "Transforming Displaced Women in Sudan" will be essential for anyone concerned with the interrelated consequences of war, forced migration, and gender inequality.

Migration and Refugee Policies - An Overview (Paperback): Ann Bernstein, Myron Weiner Migration and Refugee Policies - An Overview (Paperback)
Ann Bernstein, Myron Weiner
R3,944 Discovery Miles 39 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Migration and refugee movements are becoming increasingly prominent features of the millennial world. Persistent disparities in wealth and job opportunities and continued political conflict and repression impel growing numbers of people to seek work and safely outside their own countries. However, many governments and their citizens remain reluctant to open their borders to foreigners. For this reason, in one country after another, migration and refugee questions have become politically controversial, creating the need for a sound understanding of policy options and their implications. This book brings together five international scholars who survey key aspects of the international experience of migration and refugee policies. In Part II, drawing on the lessons presented by international experience, a team of South African experts address the thorny migration and refugee issues confronting that country's new democratic government.

To many, refugees look like any other charity case, and we like to imagine ourselves as participating in the benevolent act of welcoming them to our country. But a second look, informed by the historical and present-day facts and events shows the error of assuming that they receive status and apparently offer nothing in return. In fact, the author of this text argues, refugees arrive in the country generally as a last resort, and although they are in desperate need of assistance, they are in fact essential not only for the economy, but for the diversity upon which contemporary society thrives. A further look at global economics demonstrates that our standard of living is partially dependant on the types of corporate forays into the cheap labour wells and the unregulated environmental buffets of the Third World that create refugee problems. Our very social structure is built upon the fruits of previous and ongoing First World control over distant lands.

Burning Country - Syrians in Revolution and War (Paperback, 2nd edition): Robin Yassin-Kassab, Leila Al-Shami Burning Country - Syrians in Revolution and War (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Robin Yassin-Kassab, Leila Al-Shami
R649 Discovery Miles 6 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

*Shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize 2017* In 2011, many Syrians took to the streets of Damascus to demand the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Today, much of Syria has become a war zone where foreign journalists find it almost impossible to report on life in this devastated land. Burning Country explores the horrific and complicated reality of life in present-day Syria with unprecedented detail and sophistication, drawing on new first hand testimonies from opposition fighters, exiles lost in an archipelago of refugee camps, and courageous human rights activists among many others. These stories are expertly interwoven with a trenchant analysis of the brutalisation of the conflict and the militarisation of the uprising, of the rise of the Islamists and sectarian warfare, and the role of governments in Syria and elsewhere in exacerbating those violent processes. With chapters focusing on ISIS and Islamism, regional geopolitics, the new grassroots revolutionary organisations, and the worst refugee crisis since World War Two, Burning Country is a vivid and groundbreaking look at a modern-day political and humanitarian nightmare.

This book is an in-depth reportage on some of the most defining issues of our time, namely the global refugee crisis, the conflicts displacing these masses of humanity, and the causes behind them. It is also an ode to the vanishing art of the long-form feature or reportage, which is disappearing because many media organisations can no longer afford it, or are unwilling to pay for this kind of time-consuming, on-the-ground journalism. It is essential to keep alive old-school reportage from the field because it provides a human face to the issues challenging our world. It helps pierce the bubble of propaganda with a needle of truth and, beyond the political and human, it is a beautiful art form in its own right. This book showcases a keen eye for the human story and a profound commitment to the human family. By telling the stories detailed here, it helps put a human face on the suffering that is too often viewed statistically and quantitatively.

Institutional Disrespect - South Sudanese Experiences of the Structural Marginalisation of Refugee Migrants in Australia... Institutional Disrespect - South Sudanese Experiences of the Structural Marginalisation of Refugee Migrants in Australia (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Ibolya Losoncz
R1,539 Discovery Miles 15 390 Out of stock

This book is about the institutional disrespect experienced by refugee immigrants at the hands of the state and its institutions. The desire to be treated respectfully is not felt only by refugees, but they are a much higher risk of not receiving it. Using a case study of recently settled South Sudanese Australians, the author uncovers the social realities of their marginalisation and examines how blocked pathways to cultivate collective and self-identities can lead to a breakdown of social bonds between immigrants and social institutions. Institutional Disrespect invites us to take a fresh look at whose responsibility it is to address the disrespect felt by immigrants and other marginalised groups, and argues that when disrespect is systemic in governance arrangements, or comes in the forms of injustice and institutional mistreatment, the responsibility lies not with individuals but with the state, its institutions and its appointed bureaucrats.

Understanding Immigration and Refugee Policy - Contradictions and Continuities (Book, New): Rosemary Sales Understanding Immigration and Refugee Policy - Contradictions and Continuities (Book, New)
Rosemary Sales
R2,048 Discovery Miles 20 480 Out of stock

Immigration, particularly asylum, has become a major political issue in Britain and Europe and its impact on welfare, employment and 'social cohesion' highly contested. While asylum policy has become more punitive, dependence on immigrant labour has been increasingly acknowledged by governments which attempt to 'manage' migration to secure the benefits without the presumed costs. The book provides an essential background to understanding these debates. Based on documentary sources and primary research, it focuses mainly on Britain within an international and European context. The first part examines different theoretical approaches to understanding migratory flows and strategies. It explores forced and voluntary migration, the gender dimension in migration decisions and transnational links maintained by migrants. Part two focuses on continuities and change in migration policy and how boundaries have shifted to exclude and include different groups. It explores links between immigration policy, welfare and social exclusion, and migrants' experiences in negotiating and challenging these policies. The book concludes by questioning whether immigration controls can be justified on either ethical or practical grounds. The book will be a key text for students and researchers of migration and ethnicity, and of social policy and welfare. It will be of interest to professionals working with migrants and refugees and to all those concerned with migrant rights.

The insecurity which irregular migrants face on a daily basis because of the unlawfulness of their residence prompted the European Committee on Migration (CDMG) to assess their situation in Council of Europe member states. The aim of the exercise was to pool and evaluate national experience and to draw up proposals on dealing with irregular migrants and improving cooperation between countries of origin and host countries.
Five countries volunteered - Armenia, Germany, Greece, Italy and the Russian Federation - and submitted some aspects of their national policies regarding the situation of irregular migrants for evaluation.
After Volume I, which contains a summary of the project and the national reports of Italy and Germany, Volume II looks at the situation of irregular migrants in Armenia, Greece and the Russian Federation.

Social Work with Asylum Seekers and Refugees - Making a Difference (Paperback): Peter Fell, Benedict Fell Social Work with Asylum Seekers and Refugees - Making a Difference (Paperback)
Peter Fell, Benedict Fell
R575 Discovery Miles 5 750 Out of stock

This book provides a comprehensive picture of social work with both asylum-seeking adults and children, and people recognised as refugees in Britain. It draws directly from practice experience and uses a range of methods to convey the immediacy of front-line work with a group of people whose reasons for being here are still only vaguely understood by many in the social work profession and beyond. Supportive social work with asylum seekers and refugees in both the voluntary and state sectors is seen to have a vital role in the lives of people who are often considered to be unwelcome and unwanted by the state, and who are regarded with suspicion and hostility by the general population compounded by negative portrayal in the media. The authors discuss the wider political and social contexts of asylum-seeking and its causes in the inequalities of wealth which exist between the global North and South, coupled with the persecutory regimes and conflict prevalent in many areas of the world. This book will be essential reading for all social workers and social work students who are increasingly likely to encounter asylum seekers and refugees in their practice.
